Mushroom foraging area
sprouts up in red zone
A MUSHROOM-themed
education, play and foraging area
in Richmond is set to open in
April.
The Mushroom Room will
feature at least six different native
and exotic species of edible
mushrooms for foragers, up to
five large art installations by artists
from the area, four engaging
nature play pieces, and interactive
signs to educate people about the
fungi.
The project has received a
$19,600 grant from red zone
consultative
group, Te Tira
Kāhikuhiku, to
help bring the
project to life by
the end of April.

Funding to benefit sustainability projects
THE AVON-Heathcote Estuary
Trust is one of the first groups
to benefit from the city council’s
new sustainability fund.
The trust received $20,000
towards its mobile water
education facility that will help
schools and community groups
across the city learn about
waterways.
The fund
was set up
by the city
council
in August
last year to
support their
climate change

sustainability and community
resilience committee approved
$247,930 in funding for 19
proposals from community
groups, schools, social
enterprises and businesses
that are working to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions,
combat climate change and build
resilience.
“A large number of the
funding applications we received
were focused on education,
which indicates the community
desire to raise awareness and
grow capacity for climate action,”
the committee chairwoman city
councillor Sara Templeton said.
“The committee was very keen
to support these climate-focused
projects because we are going
to need everyone in our city to
make behaviour changes if we
are to achieve our goal of halving
greenhouse gas emissions by
2030 and reaching net-zero
emissions by 2045.”
A school climate action
campus and a locally developed
app that allows people to rent,
lend or borrow household items
were also among the recipients of
the first round of funding.
“We are granting Ao Tawhiti
Discovery School a $40,000
grant to help them achieve their
goal of setting up New Zealand’s
first climate campus. They want
to equip students with practical
action-oriented learning on
climate change and provide a
one-stop shop for education on
sustainability that other schools
can tap into,” Templeton said.
“It is a great initiative that
will be an asset to the city and
benefit schools that might
otherwise struggle to deliver
comprehensive sustainability
education.
“We also approved $3500 in

funding is young propagating

Brighton Community Gardens.
This project will provide
hands-on learning for at least
70 students from seven local
schools about food growing and
preparing healthy food.
Said Templeton: “The
committee also approved a
grant of $5000 to support a local
business that has developed the
Mutu sharing app which allows
people to rent, lend or borrow
household items instead of
purchasing them.
“This initiative supports
our goal of having a resourceefficient,
circular, sharing
economy and has the potentially
to reduce waste while at the same
time building more connected,
resilient communities.”
Grants were also given to Te
Pūtahi Christchurch Transitional
Architecture Trust, which will
use its $30,000 towards climate
change education events, the
Summit Road Society, which
received $20,000 towards the
planting of 87,000 trees on the
Port Hills, and $16,000 went to
RAD Bikes Charitable Trust to
expand its activities that repair
and share bikes with low-income
families.
In the next funding round,
the city council is looking to
support innovative projects that
help reduce emissions from the
district.

the former residential red zone area.
We want to encourage people to
continue doing that, and connecting
both with nature and the area,” said
Guglietta.
“This is the first part of a wider
vision we have. We’ve got exciting
plans to transform the area from
Swanns Rd to North Avon Rd into
an educational, family-friendly art
trail and nature
play area that
weaves among the
old, established
gardens and fruit
trees that we
want to continue
tending.”

providing a new community hub for
Richmond residents and visitors.
“This project will be an educational
experience, but I’m most excited
about the use of large-scale artworks
to engage the community” she said.
TTK is able to approve applications
to use former red zone land on a
temporary basis and can issue grants
for up to $20,000 to help enable
projects and activate the regeneration
areas.
Said Williams: “I really encourage
people to apply to use the former
residential red zone land for
community initiatives.
“We love ideas that connect local
communities, involve volunteers and
bring people into the regeneration
areas, and the red zone transitional
land use fund can help bring those
ideas to life.”
The Mushroom Room is a
Riverlution Collective initiative,
which is being driven by the
Richmond Community Garden.
The weather may have been overcast, but that didn’t stop children from the
Rawhiti Oscar programme enjoying themselves at the New Brighton Beachside
Playground earlier this week. Based at Te Kura Tawhito/The Old School in New
Brighton, the programme is run by the Eastern Community Sport and Recreation
Inc offering parents holiday and after-school care options.
