Heroine Or
Fraud?
It is exactly two week after the
#LekkiMassacre dominated
the social sphere; Twitter
and the online news media.
One name pops up when we
remember Tuesday the 20th
of October, 2020 (20-10-20),
and that is Nigeria female disc
jockey, Obianuju Catherine Udeh
popularly known as DJ Switch!
On Tuesday, October 20,
security operatives stormed the
Lekki Toll gate to enforce the
24-hour curfew imposed by the
Lagos state governor, Babajide
Sanwo-Olu, and in the cause fired
live bullets on unarmed peaceful
#EndSARS protesters. This horrific
incident was live streamed by
DJ Switch on IG live feeds as she
and others tried to save those
with gunshot wounds, Switch was
dubbed “heroine” by some and
“opportunist, liar, criminal” by
others who accused her falsifying
her figures in her reportage- ‘an
act which could have resulted to
genocide’.

DJ Switch’s Childhood and Education
Obianuju Catherine Udeh popularly
known as DJ Switch is a Nigerian Disc
Jockey; DJ, songwriter and musician,
was born on 26th April, 1984 in Udi
town in Enugu State. She spent most of
her childhood in Warri, Delta State and
later moved to Abuja. She is currently
based in Lagos. DJ Switch is the last
child in a family of eight children. Her
father is late.
Education
DJ Switch attended the University of
Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) in Rivers State
where she graduated with a degree in
Geology.
Career
DJ Switch was part of a music
group Da Pulse. Da Pulse participated
and won the 2009 Star Quest music
competition. The group later released
a single tittled, So Tey, and featured
American rapper, Busta Rhymes.

Switch is a multi-talented creative
artist. Asides her DJ work, DJ Switch is
also a singer, rapper and songwriter.
DJ Switch’s Awards and Nominations
In 2013, She won the first edition of
the Glo X-Factor. She was later signed
to Sony Music as part of the prizes for
the emergence.
DJ Switch has been nominated
for several reputable awards. She
was a nominee of the City People
Entertainment Award for Most
Promising Act of the Year (Female). DJ
Switch won the City People Award for
Best Female DJ in 2016.
DJ Switch was featured in a 2018
CNN editorial titled: Nigeria’s female
DJs spinning against stereotypes.
DJ Switch’s Family, Husband and
Children
DJ Switch is not yet married and
does not have a husband. As a single
mother, DJ Switch’s is raising her child
alone.
DJ Switch said in a 2013 interview
with Encomium Magazine: “My baby
is eight and I would rather keep the
identity of the child’s father private.”
DJ Switch’s daughter is currently
fifteen years old.
