WELCOME
On behalf of the board, staff, faculty, and members of Hui
No`eau Visual Arts Center, it is a delight to welcome you to the
2010 Art Affair auction & benefit, The Bourbon Street Ball!
Proceeds from tonight’s Raise the Paddle auction will
complement the significant achievements the Hui has made
during the last year with regard to children’s educational
programming. The goal of Hui youth programs is to offer highquality
visual arts education and cultural enrichment to every
interested child regardless of their socioeconomic background
or artistic aptitude. The Hui collaborates with community
schools like Makawao’s Kalama Intermediate & Kihei’s Kamali`i
Elementary, as well as organizations that enable access to the arts
for at-risk youth and those with special needs. We also extend
scholarships to families unable to afford tuition for classes &
workshops.
I wish to express our deepest appreciation to the individuals
and local businesses that generously gave their time, energy
and donations to this event. We hope you will enjoy the elegant
evening it has become as we celebrate Maui’s next generation of
artists.

ABOUT THE HUI
The mission of Hui No`eau is to unlock creativity
through exceptional visual arts education.
Hui No`eau Visual Arts Center provides a wide range of programs that
support lifelong learning in the arts including public workshops and
classes, open studios, lectures, exhibitions, community art events,
historical house tours and educational outreach programs with schools
and community partner organizations. One of the last of its kind on Maui,
we are a nonprofit, non-degree granting, community based visual arts
education organization offering open access to quality arts instruction by
teaching artists. Our programs and services are accessible to all, regardless
of artistic aptitude or ability to pay tuition.

Art Affair welcomes back Kip Toner, one of the nation’s premier benefit
auctioneers, now celebrating his 8 th year at Art Affair.
Kip holds the prestigious Benefit Auctioneer Specialist designation
from the National Auctioneers Association. His Seattle-based firm is
one of the largest benefit auction companies in the nation, consulting
annually on over 100 fundraising auctions and providing an unmatched
level of service to benefit auctions from Washington, D.C. to Hawai`i.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
RECOGNITION AWARD
The Board of Directors Recognition Award was established to honor the
extraordinary contributions of individuals to Hui No`eau. This year’s award
is presented to John W. Hoxie, Jr.- longtime volunteer, woodworker, donor,
advocate and past President of Hui No`eau
Visual Arts Center.
Shortly after retiring from Hawaiian Commercial
& Sugar Company in 2003, where he served
as Vice President, John enrolled in a Hui
woodworking class. The experience of
unlocking his creativity as an artist prompted
a new passion for the arts and he dedicated
himself to becoming more involved, in any
capacity. A year later he was elected by the
Board of Directors as the Hui’s 41st President, a
position he kept for five years- the longest term
ever served by a Hui President.
During his tenure as leader of Hui No`eau, John managed crucial capital
projects such as the 2005 Save the Hui – Buy Kaluanui campaign, a grassroots
initiative to purchase the land that the Hui has called home for nearly 35
years, as well as the 2007 construction of the Ginny & Art McCoy Jewelry
Studio, a state-of-the-art workspace offering invaluable opportunities
to students, teaching artists, and open studio users. A highly respected
community leader, John has overseen national searches for Hui executive
directors, recruited and developed strong relationships with board members
and made the case for visual arts education and preserving our historic
Baldwin estate to countless community supporters.
“John has done a masterful job of recruiting exceptional talent to the board,”
remarks Hui Board Member Chris Cowan. “Basically whenever anything
needed to happen, from fundraising visits to prospective donors, to calls on
government officials, to physically helping maintain and improve grounds and
facilities, John volunteered and followed through completely never losing his
passion for the organization or his positive attitude.”
It is with great joy that we present John with this award, whose leadership,
commitment, integrity and vision have made a significant impact on where the
organization is today. Mahalo nui loa, John, for your commitment to the Hui
and for your significant contributions to the advancement of the arts on Maui.

RAISE THE PADDLE
Each year, the Art Affair Committee and Hui Board of Directors select a
particular area in need of focused attention for event attendees to raise
their paddles to support. With the incredible impact made by last year’s
auction, we are pleased to focus this evening’s
fundraising efforts on Hui youth programs.
Providing critical access to high-quality visual
arts education in a variety of artistic media,
hands-on instruction by teaching artists, and
unique opportunities to work in professional
studio spaces, Hui youth programs unlock the
creative spirit of Maui’s young artists and enrich
our entire community. Program funding supports
arts education for intergenerational, at-risk, and
special needs groups, provides scholarships that
offer blossoming artists the chance to explore
and realize their artistic goals, and enables
partnership programs with public schools and community groups.
The arts are an essential component of education; everyone, not
only those with specific artistic talent, can benefit from opportunities
to create and communicate through the arts. From promoting selfexpression
and social development to
developing critical thinking and problem
solving skills, the valuable lessons gained
from a high-quality visual arts edcuation
benefit our youth, their families, and our
greater community; an education that can
be applied to the diverse aspirations of Maui
youth- the future leaders of our island and
our world.
Youth programs depend upon the generosity
of charitable donors like you whose support
helps us to maintain quality and excellence
of staff & faculty and to develop exciting new
programs that inspire creativity in Maui’s children.
We invite you to help Hui No`eau Visual Arts Center continue to teach
arts appreciation, enable broad access to visual arts education, and
offer an open forum for creativity and new ideas. Please raise your

AUCTION RULES
BIDDING DURING ART AFFAIR
When you check in, you will be given a personal bid number. All sales
will be recorded and tracked using the bid number printed on your auction
paddle. See guidelines below for information regarding the bidding process.
SILENT AUCTION GUIDELINES
The Silent Auction will begin at 5:00 pm and close at 8:40 pm.
A bid sheet is displayed with each item. The item’s number will correspond
with that in your catalog or insert.
A minimum bid amount has been established for each silent auction item.
You may not bid below this amount.
To enter a bid, print your personal bid number legibly. If your entry is not
legible, the next bidder becomes the winner.
Once a bid is entered, it may not be removed.
Each new bid must be written on the next available line. It must be made in
an amount equal to, or greater than, the increment amount indicated on the
bid sheet.
When the silent auction closes, bids will no longer be accepted.
The wining bid is the last entry on the bid sheet. If you are not present at
auction closing, you are still the winner. We will call you the following week
to make arrangements for pick-up or shipping.
LIVE AUCTION GUIDELINES
The Live Auction begins at 6:20 pm and will continue without interruption
until all items are auctioned.
Auctioneer opens bidding on each piece at a predetermined price level.
To enter a bid, bidders should raise their paddle, indicating willingness to
purchase the item at that price level. The auctioneer selects the individual
he sees first. A bid is registered only when formally recognized by the
auctioneer.
Upon the auctioneer’s final “sold to,” the highest bidder, acknowledged by
the auctioneer, shall be deemed to have purchased the piece in accordance

with all the conditions herein and assumes full risk and responsibility.
Hui No`eau Visual Arts Center reserves the right to reject a bid from
any bidder. In the event of any dispute between bidders, or in the event
of doubt on the part of the auctioneer as to the validity of the bid, the
auctioneer will have the sole and final discretion either to determine
the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the piece in question. If
any disputes arise after the sale, Hui sales records or invoices shall be
conclusive in all respects.
PAYMENT & CHECKOUT
We accept payments in cash, by check, or by Visa, MasterCard, American
Express, and Discover. Payment in full is required, and all sales are final.
General excise tax will be added to final bid price.
Items you have won will be ready for checkout starting at 9:15 pm. To
avoid waiting, we encourage you to return to the Hui at a later date to pick
up your purchases. This allows you to leave with your guests, and gives us
an opportunity to carefully package your items and invoice you efficiently.
RESTRICTIONS & EXPIRATIONS
Auction items and services are subject to space availability. Blackout dates
may apply.
Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services must be used by
February 27, 2011.
Please read your gift certificate carefully. Hui No`eau Visual Arts Center
accepts no liability and provides no warranties on the packages.
TAX-DEDUCTIBILITY
In general, if the amount of your bid exceeds the fair market value of the
item as listed on the bid sheets and in this catalog, the difference can be
claimed as a tax-deductible contribution to the extent allowed by law.
Please consult your tax advisor for individual advice for your particular
situation.
