RECOGNITION AWARD
The Board of Directors Recognition Award was established to honor the
extraordinary contributions of individuals to Hui No`eau. This year’s award
is presented to John W. Hoxie, Jr.- longtime volunteer, woodworker, donor,
advocate and past President of Hui No`eau
Visual Arts Center.
Shortly after retiring from Hawaiian Commercial
& Sugar Company in 2003, where he served
as Vice President, John enrolled in a Hui
woodworking class. The experience of
unlocking his creativity as an artist prompted
a new passion for the arts and he dedicated
himself to becoming more involved, in any
capacity. A year later he was elected by the
Board of Directors as the Hui’s 41st President, a
position he kept for five years- the longest term
ever served by a Hui President.
During his tenure as leader of Hui No`eau, John managed crucial capital
projects such as the 2005 Save the Hui – Buy Kaluanui campaign, a grassroots
initiative to purchase the land that the Hui has called home for nearly 35
years, as well as the 2007 construction of the Ginny & Art McCoy Jewelry
Studio, a state-of-the-art workspace offering invaluable opportunities
to students, teaching artists, and open studio users. A highly respected
community leader, John has overseen national searches for Hui executive
directors, recruited and developed strong relationships with board members
and made the case for visual arts education and preserving our historic
Baldwin estate to countless community supporters.
“John has done a masterful job of recruiting exceptional talent to the board,”
remarks Hui Board Member Chris Cowan. “Basically whenever anything
needed to happen, from fundraising visits to prospective donors, to calls on
government officials, to physically helping maintain and improve grounds and
facilities, John volunteered and followed through completely never losing his
passion for the organization or his positive attitude.”
It is with great joy that we present John with this award, whose leadership,
commitment, integrity and vision have made a significant impact on where the
organization is today. Mahalo nui loa, John, for your commitment to the Hui
and for your significant contributions to the advancement of the arts on Maui.
