The above quote is widely attributed to the ancient philosopher Socrates, but
in reality, those are the words of world-class gymnast Dan Millman who wrote
them in 2006. Since then, Millman has become a successful coach, self-help
author, and lecturer.
No matter the source, these words may never ring truer than they do at the
launch of 2021. This is a time to reassess and adjust.
Housetrends, and all of the clients who support us, definitely went through
changes in the past year. While our first impulse was to try to get back to the
way things were, after some consideration we decided this was actually the
right time to look optimistically forward. After a definite lull, builders, remodelers,
and designers got back to their booming businesses as homeowners made
plans to add function and comfort to their nests.
We’ve decided to celebrate the boom in home renovation and this special
Idea Book issue of Housetrends reflects that. In a subtle variation from our
typical content, this publication focuses on how the home and garden industry
is changing….what’s trending, what’s new, what there is to look forward to.
Experts have shared with us what they see happening in kitchens and baths
over the next three years. Color professionals have selected their hot hues for
2021. And builders and kitchen planners are telling us that working pantries
are definitely worth considering.
We’ll be back with a more traditional version of
Housetrends in March, but in the meantime, we
hope you enjoy this special edition.

4 Reasons People are Buying Homes in 2021
1. Record-Low Mortgage Interest Rates
In 2020, interest rates hit record lows 16 times, continuing to fall further
below 3%. According to Freddie Mac, the average 30-year fixed interest
rate today is 2.65%. Len Keifer, Deputy Chief Economist for Freddie Mac,
advises:
“If you’ve found a home that fits your needs at a price you can afford, it
might be better to act now rather than wait for future rate declines that
may never come and a future that likely holds very tight inventory.”
2. Working from Home
Remote work is a new normal for many businesses. Many are discovering
they don’t need to live close to the office anymore and they
can get more for their money by moving a little further outside of the
city limits. David Mele, President at Homes.com, says:
“The surge in the work-from-home population has rewritten the playbook
for many homebuying and rental decisions, from when and where
to relocate, to what people are looking for in their next residence.”
3. More Outdoor Space
Another new priority for homeowners is having more usable outdoor
space. According to the State of Home Spending report by HomeAdvisor,
of the households surveyed, almost half reported spending 27% more on
outdoor living over the past year.
This is a trend that’s expected to grow in 2021 and beyond.
4. Avoiding Renovations
Many homeowners would rather buy a new home than go through
the process of renovating. According to the National Association of
Realtors (NAR), 44% of homebuyers purchased a new home to “avoid
renovations or problems with the plumbing or electricity.”
Depending on what needs to be addressed, today’s high buyer demand
may make it possible to skip some renovations before selling.
Many of these homeowners have prioritized buying over renovating
for convenience and potential cost savings.

The National
Kitchen & Bath
Association reveals
top trends to
impact kitchen and
bathroom design
decisions over the
next three years
Recently, The National Kitchen &
Bath Association released their annual
Design Trends study. The report
takes a deep dive into all aspects of
both kitchen and primary bathroom
design, with the goal of highlighting
styles, features, materials and innovations
expected to be most popular
over the next few years. The survey
included over 700 respondents from
across North America. More than
half the participants were designers
and the remainder were architects,
remodelers, showroom professionals
and manufacturers.
Here are some highlights from
their research:
It’s no big surprise that the COVID-
19 pandemic will have a substantial
lasting impact on kitchen and
bath design. As homeowners spend
more time at home, kitchens and
primary bathrooms are getting larger,
the volume of outdoor living projects
is increasing significantly and there
is a need for easy-to-clean surfaces,
flexible living spaces and seamless
technology integration for added convenience
and peace of mind. ➻

Aesthetically, design preferences in both the kitchen and bath will continue
to be more contemporary and transitional in style, with the added influence
of a new leading trend of “natural/organic.” This combination feels more
European in style and scale, with clean lines, minimal detailing, the warmth
and texture of natural finishes, and larger windows to bring the feeling of
the outdoors inside.
Traditional design, which consistently had been one of the top three
kitchen and bath styles for more than a decade, is now anticipated to be
one of the least popular. “We expect designs for both the kitchen and
bath to continue trending toward a more modern, organic feel that is both
streamlined and adaptable,” said Bill Darcy, NKBA CEO.
“The kitchen has long been the heart of the home. But especially during
the pandemic, it has emerged as the most prominent, multitasking room as
well,” Darcy says. “We see this continuing with more open-space concepts,
an extension into multi-season outdoor living spaces, larger kitchen island
hubs and increased functionality and storage to allow homeowners to cook,
eat, work, home-school and play, all in the same vicinity.” ➻

are nearly equal in popularity, with
induction expected to replace
traditional glass electric cooktops.
Ventilation hoods will become the
new decorative focal point in the
kitchen.
FAUCETS
Finishes are matte and brushed in
stainless steel or black. Functions
include motion-controlled, handsfree
or touch/tap. ➻

SURFACES
Quartz, particularly in lighter colors, will continue to be the driving material for
countertops. Backsplashes go large scale, featuring a solid slab or long subway tile.
Complementary colors and materials mix on perimeter countertops and islands. ➻

There is increasing value
on a more hidden, but quite
powerful feature in the
kitchen—connectivity which
means your smart apps talk to
your appliances. Wi-fi enabled
appliances allow everyday tasks
to be streamlined and keep
errors to a minimum.
“For example, artificial
intelligence is used to inventory
the contents of a refrigerator.
Connected food apps then
suggest recipes for dinners
based on those contents,”
says Ken Rieman with Custom
Distributors. “A range can be
connected with a hood to signal
the start of the exhaust fan.
A refrigerator can serve as a
command center with a touch
screen featuring Wi-Fi, voice
activation, cameras and more.”
Does “connectivity” mean
there’s more to break? “It’s
really the opposite,” says Darin
Rieman, Ken’s brother and
partner at Custom Distributors.
“Smart technology monitors the
performance of the appliance
and suggests the most efficient
settings. The most recent
technology will be downloaded
to the appliance to keep it at
peak performance.”

In demand are roomier freestanding showers to accommodate two
people with zero-clearance entry, integrated seating and grab bars.

We’re all crazy for a
Charcuterie
While traditionally a charcuterie is a collection of cold, cooked meats, that
word—and the board it sits on—recently have exploded into a visual and
gastronomical feast.
When it comes to entertaining—small groups or large—it’s hard to beat the
fun and flexibility of these platters. Portions can easily be scaled, and ingredients
selected can be as affordable or high-end as you see fit. Here are a few guidelines
for getting started. ➻

Cheeses: Choose 4+
Selecting a soft cheese, a semi-soft cheese, a firm cheese,
and a blue cheese will provide for a balanced combination.
For example: a brie for the soft, a Havarti or mozzarella for
the semi-soft, and a cheddar for the firm selection. If you
don’t care for “stinky” cheeses, consider one with added
wine, herbs or fruit. Have fun with the cheeses. These
selections seem to generate the most buzz among guests.
Meats: Choose 2+
Consider a reliable classic such as ham or turkey, then add
a spicier selection or two—possibly pepperoni, salami,
prosciutto, cured sausage, chorizo, or even bacon. While
some of these meats can be a bit pricey per pound, you
really don’t need a large amount of each. Guests will be
enjoying tasting portions.
Bread and crackers: 2+
A hearty bread, such as a baguette, ciabatta, or nutty whole
grain loaf, sliced into small sections is great for creating
tasty masterpieces using the meats and cheeses along with
a smear of jam, chutney or mustard. A few clusters of
gourmet crackers work well for staging those smaller bites.
Fruits: 3+
Fruits are great for adding splashes of color to your board.
Clusters of red or green grapes and berries add a visual
punch. Apple slices might work well with your Cheddar
cheese. Pears accompany your brie. Also consider dried
fruits in the form of figs, cranberries or dried apricots.
Spreads: 2+
You should include at least one sweet and one savory
spread. In general, a spicy whole grain mustard is always a
good pick to satisfy the savory side of things, but a hummus
or tapenade will work as well. The sky is the limit on the
sweet side— anything from a local honey to chutney or jam.
Final touches
Small, but mighty details to add include pickles, veggies, and
olives. Add in a variety of nuts—walnuts, cashews, almonds,
pistachios, and pecans—there’s not a bad choice in the
bunch. A sprig of rosemary, or another fresh herb add a
perfect finishing touch.
Assembly
Find the right board to build your platters. Large cutting
boards, marble slabs, slate boards or ceramic platters are
great options. Start with one of your larger items as a focal
point, place the items in order of biggest to smallest. Meats
can be sliced, folded or rolled up in individual tasting sizes.
Soft cheeses should be served with a spreader or butter
knife. Hard cheeses can sliced, cubed, or served with a
knife. The smaller items, such as bread slices, crackers and
nuts should be in a couple different areas so that they are
easily within reach. Mustards and jams can be placed in small
ramekins scattered around the board with spreaders nearby.
While assembly may seem intimidating, you really can’t mess
it up. If you’d prefer to have a visual staring point, find a
version online to use as inspiration. Enjoy!

For its first ever color of the year, Glidden has chosen an
accent color: Aqua Fiesta. The Glidden team describes
it as a “vibrant aquamarine that works best in small
doses when combined with other neutral paint colors.”

Amped up pantries might include a
second refrigerator, oven, microwave or
dishwasher. While entertaining, homeowners
can clear the table and place the
dishes in the pantry and move on to
dessert with a clean backdrop. (If they’ve
played their cards right, they could have
one of their teenagers load the dishwasher
out of sight while guests enjoy
an after-dinner drink.) These pantries
also work beautifully as a staging area or
catering kitchen for parties.
While it may sound like a splurge,
incorporating a working pantry when
building a new home or remodeling a
kitchen might actually allow homeowners
to cut a few corners. Since these areas
are meant to be out of sight, owners can
opt for more affordable options such as
metal shelving and laminate countertops.
And when small appliances and entertaining
