spaces reflect the
trends that have
been developing in
kitchen design
The kitchen has always been the hub of the
home. But, in 2020, it became the home’s
lifeline. We have baked, worked, homeschooled,
dined-in, Zoomed, TikTok’d,
worked-out … lived, in our kitchens.
With the prospect of another few months
staying-home and staying-safe, many of us
are reworking and redesigning our living
spaces to accommodate our ‘new normal.’

ADDING
APPLIANCES
As we do more in our kitchens, we are
incorporating more appliances. The
popularity of the double-dishwasher has
increased, as has that of the integrated
coffee machine, bringing ease of living
and a bit of what we are missing into our
homes. Likewise, our taps have become
sophisticated appliances. A long-time
popular choice, the hot water tap seems
to be a necessity. Those offering chilled
filtered and sparkling water are in demand,
giving just that little bit more luxury.
MULTI-USE
SPACES
From breakfast mornings to homework
snacks, the kitchen provides. But during
the last year, the island, a 2020 saviour,
has offered additional worktop (and
work!) space. Double islands are popular
in our recent designs, as well as retractable
doors, integrated desking, hidden offices,
and many clever storage solutions – all
highlighting our need to use our kitchens
for way more than cooking. Charging
stations and pop-up sockets show homeschooling
and working-from-home can
happen in the day, and be out of sight for
the weekend.
We aren’t going out, we’re staying in;
and dividing our kitchens into areas
reflects this: our kitchens feature drinks
cabinets and bar areas; spaces for sofas
and comfortable seating; larger pantries
and larders; and, just off the kitchen,
because we want more outside time – in
all weathers – boot-rooms and utilities are
warranting a huge amount of attention.
STYLE
Kitchen design is becoming increasingly
elegant yet bold, with a demand for
slimmer worktops but bolder cabinetry
colours. We want somthing brighter
to look at. Greens, reds and yellows are
becoming more popular than the recent
greys and dark blues. We’re spending so
much time in our kitchens, we want to
enjoy looking at them!
