Whilst I am forever grateful for the opportunity,
this Firm opened my eyes to the old archaicstyle
ways accounting was done, the
significant years of service required before
any advancement etc, and after standing up
for myself against workplace bullying, I was
released in 1985.
Disillusioned and soured by that experience, I
found myself in Melbourne and joined a firm
that was undergoing a major merger with
several firms to become Ernst & Whinney
(later Ernst & Young). My boss saw that I was
passionate and hungry to learn and he obliged
by placing me on a variety of different jobs, in
different departments such as insolvency, tax
and small business when things were quiet.
I ‘cut my teeth’ here and thrived.
I got married in 1986 and moved back to
Warrnambool (as my ex-wife was a local)
but divorced in 1989, which in hindsight was
the catalyst for the move to starting my own
business. I was in a bad space during this
period as my marriage crumbled and I was
disillusioned with a couple of accounting firms
that I worked for as I was trying to establish
my career.
I wanted to
create an
accounting
firm that was
purpose-filled,
genuinely
cared about
it’s customers,
showed them
how to grow a
business and
provided them
with awesome
care.
After travelling around Australia for a couple
of months, which included a stint on an
Aboriginal mission in Daly River with my Uncle
who was a priest, Fr Terry Bowman, I found my
groove again and knew what I needed to do.
