The third youngest was my father, who had neither travelled more than 25 kilometres from home nor spoken any English! As most of their fellow passengers were heading to the migrant camp in Bathurst that’s where they decided to go too, as they had no plan of action and at least would get a bed for the night. Conditions there were very challenging – wooden benches and thin blankets were the bedding and as there was a surplus labour pool, limited employment prospects forced them to pool together the last of their money to buy three train tickets to Melbourne to locate a contact given to them by a soldier who served under my Uncle in the Dutch army - a Father Maas, a Dutch priest who ran a hostel in Kew. They had enough change to scrape together the tram fare from the Spencer Street station and then rely on their survival instincts to find somewhere to stay and scrounge a meal. Father Maas looked on their letter of introduction favourably and provided them with a room and meal in return for washing the dishes and other odd jobs. This act of kindness has inspired me to create a business that can change the world by helping improve the life of one person at a time. My Dad (and his family as a consequence) was given hope and the very basics of human needs at a critical time in his life that opened up an opportunity for them to live in ‘the lucky country’ and created an everlasting impact on him - and me! I grew up in a one-income household of seven kids. My late father earned about $17,000 from his retail assistant’s job and my late mother was a homemaker who operated on a shoestring budget and could make the finances stretch beyond imagination. I saw first-hand how hard they worked and struggled to make ends meet and to provide us with a great family life, education and opportunities that they never had. This kind gesture from a stranger who understood their plight and saw the desperation on their faces reminded me of the Christian parables of the Good Samaritan and Jesus feeding the masses with just five loaves of bread and two fish. ceebeks.com 7
