view from the editor’s desK nPreparing for the FutureThis summer andautumn more peoplethan ever have beenwalking, jogging orcycling on the country roadoutside my office window.Some couples walk togetherevery morning. Other peoplewalk alone, at a brisk pace,some wearing headphones.A young man and womanpush a baby in a stroller.Dogs are regularly beingtaken for walks. One womanjogs with her AustralianShepherd. In warm weather Iused to see the same solitarycyclists out for a spin.Everyone is keeping a gooddistance apart. Yet they’vebeen reaching out verbally, tosay hello or comment on theweather or ask how you’redoing. For some of us – manyof us? – these outings are theonly socializing we do all day.I hope that peoplecontinue to get out duringwinter. It’s expected to bea long, difficult season forCOVID cases. There is talkabout COVID fatigue anddepression. What can help isregular fresh air and exercise,even when you don’t feellike it. Especially when youdon’t feel like it. I’ve takenmy dog for a walk when I’vebeen cold, unhappy, tired andbored, only to return to mycozy little house with moreenergy and lifted spirits.Let us know what you think!KindnessI know that some peopleare having a particularlytough time. If you can,why not check in withneighbours to see how they’redoing? A kind word canimprove people’s moods.Our readers continueto amaze us with financialgifts. We haven’t askedfor donations, but peoplehave been surprising uswith contributions. Weare humbled, appreciativeand plan to continuedeveloping the kind ofmagazine content you want.Last Pandemic Winter?Let’s also hope that this firstwinter of our pandemic isthe last. One concernI’ve learned from homegardeners this year, iswhat a poor harvest therewas. With an infestation ofgypsy moths, I myself hadno apples growing on mydefoliated trees, althoughthey have grown new leaves.Unseasonable cold followedswiftly by extreme heat ledto poor yields. There werefewer pollinators workingto produce fruits. Tomatoestook a very long time toripen on the vine; manypeople resorted to pickingthem when green andhoping they would turn redindoors. Harmful insects,temperature swings, lack ofpollinators and drought aresome difficulties that couldincrease in future. Could foodscarcity become a problem?We may not yet knowhow, but it’s possible that thispandemic is related to climatechange. If people’s crops arefailing in other parts of theworld, they have to turn toother sources of food. Virusesare crossing from animalspecies to humans, perhapsthrough inhumane treatmentand the consumption ofwild animals. Could this beanother way that climatechange is harming us?In This IssueKeeping climate changein check is the subject ofBob Barnett’s column inthis issue. His “View ofLand Conservation” inthis issue is a timelywake-up call for us all.We also offer contentthat is pure enjoyment. Ourcover story takes us on awinter kayak trip north of theEscarpment in Georgian Baynear Collingwood. AuthorAlbert Bedward shares plentyof tips for how to survivethis chilly adventure.Jennifer Howard does a lotof volunteer work for ProcyonWildlife Centre, and is just asdedicated to photographingwildlife at large. She sharessome of her breathtakingwinter captures with us.David Kendall is anauthor with a long-standing,profound commitment to theNiagara Escarpment where helives.
