The lore of crystals
Oxygen Art Centre presents an artist
talk with Brian Lye on Saturday, March
13, at noon. Everyone is welcome and
admission is free.
The artist talk will share information
about Lye’s residency and current exhibition,
Above Above Below Below, as
well as his artistic practice. This online
event will also feature discussion on
the topic of Lye’s exhibition, crystals.
Lye conducted research for an experimental
documentary on crystalline
minerals across scientific, mining, and
healing fields, which this exhibition
and new series of films are derived. Utilizing
discussion-based research, Lye
investigated human and natural relations
to crystals. Interviewing experts
on crystals from the region forms the
foundational material for Lye’s experiments
in 16mm analogue film.
Fascinated by the semiprecious
stones and their capacity for transmission,
amplification, and new age
applications, Lye draws upon his background
in filmmaking and installation
to create an immersive body of work.
Lye is a filmmaker, artist, and educator
who lives and works in Nelson,
BC. His practice is focused in analogue
film production, merging the everyday
with formal experimentations in play,
special effects, and psychogeography.
To attend RSV.. by emailing info@
oxygenartcentre.org. Above Above
Below Below is currently on view at
Oxygen Art Centre until Saturday,
March 20, 2021, Thursdays and Fridays
ARCTIC OUTFLOW Claire Dibble
The culmination of an artist’s residency aboard a ship sailing in the Arctic
waters of Svalbard, “Arctic Outflow” reflects on the ways that humans are
embedded in even the most remote landscapes on Earth.
Using photo transfer images, bits of marine rubbish collected on shorelines,
and found rope Claire Dibble’s work expresses a commentary on consumerism,
acceptance, and seeking beauty in our current situation.
digital marketing, e-commerce, business
development, sales and so much more.
hundreds, if not thousands of years to
develop.
Job numbers are equally staggering;
47,000 forestry jobs were lost between
2000 and 2019 in BC. BC’s forest service
lost a quarter of its workforce after
allowing the industry to police itself
under the Forest and Range Practices
Act and the professional reliance model.
Today, less than 3 percent of productive
old growth forests exist. And
most of those old forests are slated to be
logged in the near future.
BC’s forests are managed for fibre to
fuel the ever expanding timber industry.
Even when provincial legislation calls
for protection of key wildlife habitat,
these protections move forward only if
they “do not unduly impact timber supply”
(Forest and Range Practices Act).
Nearly half of BC’s Crown lands are
managed only for low biodiversity values
and managed almost exclusively for
timber production. Biodiversity is simply
the variety of life on earth; it’s what
makes our province so special. Many
areas that the province considers to be
of little value for biodiversity are crucial
for old growth, for wildlife, for water,
and for local communities. The risk
of managing for low biodiversity was
acknowledged in the original Ministry
of Forests Biodiversity Guidebook: “…
the pattern of natural biodiversity will
be significantly altered, and the risk of
some native species being unable to survive
in the area will be relatively high.”
The current degraded and fragmented
state of many of our most endangered
ecosystems like the Coastal Douglas
Fir and Inland Temperate Rainforest
highlights the accuracy of this prediction.
Across the province we are experiencing
wide-scale declines in sensitive
species like caribou, fisher, salmon, bull
trout, and mule deer.
Today, while forest liquidation and
corporate profits have continued, BC
forest companies have invested record
breaking profits in new mills in Sweden
and the southern US. BC residents face
a legacy of severely impacted watersheds,
a province that has been carved
up with 750,000 kilometres of resource
roads, and large scale declines in sensitive
species.
A new future?
The harvesting of irreplaceable old
growth forests must end immediately.
In the face of a rapidly changing climate
and a biodiversity crisis, BC must focus
on building a forest industry that is ecologically
and socially responsible.
A brighter future for BC’s forest sector
is exemplified by small operators.
They cut less and make more. The
Harrop-Procter Community Forest
just east of Nelson, BC, delivers about
twice the amount of jobs/1000 m3 of
timber harvested with their logging
operations compared to the industry
average, and their sawmill produces 10
Harrop Procter has also reserved
70 percent of their community forest
landbase from harvesting to protect
old growth forests, water, wildlife
habitat, and community values. This
precautionary approach to forest management
prioritizes the health of water,
wildlife, and the local community while
also ensuring that local employment is
sustained.
The future of BC’s forest sector will
be shaped by the communities, Nations,
and landscapes that make our home
province so incredible. But it remains
to be seen whether the provincial NDP
government will have the political courage
and leadership to shape a brighter
future for old growth, for communities,
and for jobs. Nearly 6 months since
John Horgan committed to full implementation
of a recent government-led
report on BC’s old growth forests that
called for a paradigm shift in forest
management and we have seen no substantive
action. It’s time to move beyond
the old dogma where the government
only values our globally important forests
for their timber. It’s time for leadership.
After decades of unsustainable cut
levels, old growth forest liquidation and
corporate control of BC’s forest industry,
communities and nature deserve
action and they deserve a fighting
chance.
Bent On Art
goes virtual
Sorely missed in 2020, Bent
On Art: Kootenay Queer &
Trans Art Festival returns for
2021 in an online format. Join
us virtually for a series of events
designed to promote the work of
LGBTQ+ artists in the Kootenays
(and across British Columbia)
while creating educational
opportunities, fostering community
connection and promoting
resilience through the
arts. The festival was founded
by Samonte Cruz in 2018 and
is now delivered in partnership
with Samonte Cruz Studios and
the West Kootenay Regional Arts
Council.
This year’s theme focuses on
Queer & Trans Resilience – and
over the month of March we
will be engaging local artists in a
daily art challenge, culminating
in an online exhibition and Q&A
session on March 28. We will
also be offering a Queer & Trans
Life Drawing Workshop, as facilitated
by Nadia Moss. Our virtual
festivities will also include a
string of streamed performances
on March 27 from some of our
favourite BC-based performers,
finishing with a “Meet & Greet”
Q&A session.
Hub will scale-up food processing
Fields Forward Society is excited
to announce a new Regional Food
Hub in the Creston Valley. Farmers
and food processors from across the
Columbia Basin will have access to
the food processing facility, beginning
August 2021 when Phase One
will be complete. A full launch will
take place in the winter of 2022.
“Producers and processors in
the valley and Columbia Basin are
ready for a dedicated facility to
accelerate innovation and aggregate
our food products to the scale
required to reach new markets,”
said Danny Turner Fields Forward
Chair and owner of Just-A-Mere
Organic farms.
As part of StrongerBC: BC’s Economic
Recovery Plan, the Ministry
of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries
is providing a $750,000 grant over
three years to Fields Forward as the
lead community group on the food
hub. The facility will be one of seven
new Food Hubs in the province.
“Our food and agricultural community
have so much potential, and
this Food Hub will help everyone
who wants to grow their business
and will contribute to food security
Farmers & food producers
post your free listing anytime.
If it is posted by March 29 it
will be published in this year’s
directory.
in the Creston Valley,” said Tanya
Wall Fields Forward Vice-Chair
and RDCK Area B Director. The
funding will be used to renovate a
facility, purchase equipment and
cover staff positions for two years.
The Food Hub will produce juices
from fruits and vegetables, package
vegetables for institutions, bottle
jams, freeze-dry products into
powders, and provide other food
processing services.
The purpose of the Food Hub is to
help Kootenay region food and farm
businesses to grow and innovate by
giving them access to community-based
processing equipment and
facilities they might otherwise not
afford. It will also offer an aggregation
and distribution service, and
sales support. Cold, dry and freezer
storage is planned. Businesses will
rent the equipment or hire Fields
Forward’s staff on a fee-for-service
basis. Fields Forward will participate
in the BC Food Hub Network
connecting and learning from 12
food hubs throughout the province.
Fields Forward Society is a food
and agriculture initiative in Creston
and District with a mandate
to support and sustain
the community’s
environmental,
indigenous, social,
cultural, economic,
and aesthetic values.
In addition to
the new Food Hub,
it owns a community
fruit-juicing
machine used by the
region’s orchardists.
Kaslo Jazz Etc
2021 cancelled
It is with great sadness that we
must announce the cancellation of
the 29th Annual Kaslo Jazz Etc Festival
to be held the summer of 2021.
This isn’t a decision our team
wanted to make and we wish we
could bring you all more positive
news, but in light of COVID-19 we
do believe this is in the best interest
of our organization and broad community
to make the decision now
and focus our sights on 2022.
We appreciate all of you for supporting
the festival throughout
these past 28 years, and we plan
to continue navigating this uncertainty
so we can bring music, art,
community and magic back to
Kaslo as soon as we are able!
Please keep an eye on our social
media platforms for various events
and updates through out the year!
If you purchased a ticket for the
2021 festival, you will be receiving
a message through our ticketing
company regarding your order next
week. Please read and follow the
instructions!
Through these challenging times
- please continue to support the
arts, culture and tourism however
you can! It is incredibly important
to keep our industry alive and
able to return. We will continue to
reimagine ways to bring beauty and
art to your lives, but many artists
and venues are struggling and we
ask that you please buy merch and
donate to the arts and culture in
your area.
It is so greatly important.
Thanks for your support!
Dear Editor:
I’m sure your readers have noticed how out of whack wildlife populations are
today. Increasingly, there are more predators than anything else. Ranchers in the
Creston Flats report seeing as many as 20 grizzlies in their fields at one time.
Other farmers report a dozen grizzlies on one small area. Some bears saw no
need to hibernate this winter because food was available. If the government’s
decision to end the GB hunt was to multiply these predators, the strategy has
worked! Every year for 20 years, they’ve told us there are 15,000 GB’s in BC.
This is of course, nonsense. And as spring approaches, we
know the huge number of grizzly & black bears, wolves,
coyotes and cougars will feast on our elk, big horn sheep,
moose and deer. Dr. Vince Crighton, one of the world’s most
respected moose biologists, has a trail cam video showing
two coyotes dragging 19 mule deer fawns to the den in just
29 days. Dr. Charles Kay, another senior wildlife biologist,
tells of one grizzly bear killing 44 moose calves in a month.
Government does not appreciate the impact of predators on
young wildlife.
It is politically incorrect to say out loud there are too many
predators. Some urban-based groups are calling for the end
of wolf culls, the black bear hunt and for the protection
of predators generally. These people are either ignorant or
willfully blind. We’ve lost our woodland caribou. We’re going
to lose our moose, elk, deer and sheep, unless the politicians
wake up to the reality us locals know all too well. It isn’t
roads that reduce wildlife populations and it isn’t hunters or
trappers. It is an imbalance of too many predators. We need
access to hunt and trap these predators. We need wildlife
management policy that stops the current direction towards
predator pits. For goodness sakes, do not create more AMA’s,
VAC’s and WMA’s. The issue is not people and roads. The
issue is predators. This has been proven in NE BC with wolf
culls improving caribou populations and wolf reduction in
Muskwa Kechika saving mountain sheep and moose. It can
easily be proven here in the Kootenays, if politicians listen to
people on the ground to do what is right, rather than what is
politically correct. Please call the Honourable Katrine Conroy
in Castlegar and ask her to help. She is Minister of FLNRO.
She is a rural person and we need Minister Conroy to carry this forward.
Registration is now open for artists/
venues in the Columbia Basin to participate
in the Columbia Basin Culture
Tour (CBCT), a celebration of culture
taking place August 7 & 8, 2021, from
10 am to 5 pm. Help us make the 13th
anniversary tour the best yet!
The CBCT is a self-guided tour showcasing
local arts, culture and heritage
offered at no charge to the general
public. “Arts” includes visual, written,
Call for entry: artists/heritage venues
performing, media and inter-arts! Participating
as a venue allows you to really
connect with locals, develop a wider
audience, educate the public about what
you do, sell your art, and attract visitors
to your community.
The CBCT lets visitors visit artists’
studios that may not regularly be open
to the public, purchase work directly
from artists, and visit galleries, museums
and cultural centres to view special
displays, archives, demonstrations
or performances. It is also a chance for
them to meet the people behind the
scenes that are such a vital part of our
local culture.
Full colour tour directories will be
available free of charge to the public as
a guide to visit your location. Signage,
posters and postcards are provided to
promote your participation. Display ads
and media coverage widely promote the
event, and your web page profile will
remain for the rest of the year to list
your contact info and business hours
outside of the event.
Final registration deadline is April
15, 2021. Participating individuals and
venues must be located in the Canadian
Columbia Basin, the southeast corner
of British Columbia roughly bordered
by the communities of Valemount,
Golden, Elkford, Creston, Rossland,
Arrow Lakes and Revelstoke. Although
not in the Basin, the communities of
Grand Forks and Christina Lake are
again invited to participate this year.
SUDOKU
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a
sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each
row, column and box. Each number can appear
only once in each row, column and box. You
can fi gure out the order in which the numbers
will appear by using the numeric clues already
provided in the boxes. The more numbers you
name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
Whitewater investing
in summer
The Regional District of Central Kootenay
(RDCK) will receive a funding grant under the
BC Government’s Community Economic Recovery
Infrastructure Program (CERIP) destination
development stream worth one million dollars.
Whitewater Ski Resort will use the funds for
the development of the first phase of creating a
new summer operations/tourism and hospitality
business centered on mountain biking, hiking,
and climbing. The plan includes the development
of a Backcountry Adventure Lodge, a recreational
vehicle and tent camping area, as well as
programs supporting backcountry education and
accessibility.
Located 20 minutes outside of Nelson, BC in
the Selkirk Mountains, Whitewater Ski Resort
was originally developed in 1969 and is known
throughout the province for its unbelievable deep,
light powder and its amazing food creations.
“Whitewater Ski Resort is one of the cornerstones
of winter recreation in the Regional District
of Central Kootenay and now a summer
option will enhance our offerings,” said Ramona
Faust, RDCK Electoral Area E Director. “For a
community bursting with outdoor enthusiasts,
we are fortunate to see significant development of
recreational opportunities throughout the corridor,
whether it be through non-profit or private
organizations.”
“We really want to thank the provincial government
and the Regional District of Central Kootenay
for their support,” said Kirk Jensen, general
manager of Whitewater Ski Resort. “This has
been a year full of challenges and we are excited to
receive these funds to assist in expanding our outdoor
recreational offerings. We truly believe the
changes made with these funds and the significant
investment made by Whitewater will be welcome
additions to the area. The Backcountry Adventure
Lodge and associated campground will not only
support our community by expanding the outdoor
recreational offerings, but also help boost
the economy by
driving tourism.”
Salmo courts and
skate park refresh
Outdoor recreation in Salmo is about
to get even better with plans underway for
improvements to the town’s current sports
courts and skate park facilities.
The tennis courts are currently unusable
with uneven asphalt that is not safe to play
on, and the skate park is in an unappealing
state of disrepair. Improvements and
upgrades to these recreational spaces aim to
re-establish these places as fun and appealing
for the whole community. The spaces
are also within short walking distances from
both Salmo schools.
The estimated $135,000 project will
include a restoration of the tennis courts, the
addition of three pickleball courts and a half
basketball court, and the renewal of the outdoor
skate park.
Together, as a community, WE DID IT!
Over the past 20 months, the Cottonwood
Lake Preservation Society (CLPS) has been
engaged in a spirited, public campaign to raise
$400,000 aimed at purchasing 49 hectares of
mature forest situated directly above Cottonwood
Lake. Slated to be clear-cut, the landowner
agreed to sell the land to the Society if
a certain dollar amount was raised by a certain
date. From online auctions to photo competitions,
grade school fundraisers and grant applications,
everyone who worked directly with
the society, through to the many hundreds
who donated an idea, an hour,
a photo, the CLPS is pleased to
announce that together, we did
“We want to recognize the many partners
that have stepped up to invest in this
important project that will benefit this community
in so many ways,” said School District
8 trustee, Susan Chew. “Together, our
common values in education, fitness and the
importance of instilling a sense of community
pride for our shared spaces, are working
to help restore an area that is not being used
to its full potential at present.”
The opportunity remains for further financial
contributions to come from the community,
local business and any interested groups
that want to be involved. “We invite any
interested group that wants to contribute to
this amazing community building project to
join us, “ says Chew. “We are still looking for
more partners to help with things like donations
for player benches, water bottle filling
stations and a storage shed.”
The project is on land next to the community
pool and across the street from
both Salmo Secondary school and the
it! We have raised the money needed to purchase
the land and Save Cottonwood Lake!
“The outpouring of support from individuals,
Get your hair done!
Solving the riddle of building human connection in the
midst of a pandemic, students in the Selkirk College Hairstylist
Program are offering an in-person salon experience at Nelson’s
Silver King Campus while adhering to post-secondary health
and safety protocols.
A cornerstone program offering at the Nelson campus since
the mid-1960s, decades of learners have honed their skills in
the student-run salon that is open to the public. One of the
Selkirk College programs offered in-person since September,
students have been immersed in classroom learning and have
now opened the doors to a full range of salon services.
technical aspects we have learned so far,” says Amy Blomme,
one of 12 students in this year’s cohort. “What we can’t learn
in the classroom is communication with the client, so having
people come into the salon is an exciting part of our education.”
Blomme entered the nine-month Hairstylist Program as a
high school student through the Youth Train in Trades (YTT)
stream. Designed to help secondary students get a head start on
careers in the trades while earning credit towards high school
graduation, Blomme began preparing to enter the program in
Grade 10. This spring, the 17-year-old will graduate from Selkirk
College before she graduates from L.V. Rogers Secondary.
“I love this program so much,” she says. “When the whole
COVID thing started, it was very difficult for me as a high
school student to participate in the online learning. Coming
into this program was so amazing. Being part of an education
where the goal is to make people feel better about themselves,
that just feels good.”
Instructor Kat Zaworonok is an industry veteran and Class of
1998 Hairstylist Program alumnae who is in her first year of fulltime
teaching on the Silver King Campus. When the provincial
government instituted its first round of pandemic restrictions
last March, Zaworonok was part of the team at Waves on the
Lake Hair Design in Nelson’s Prestige Lakeside Resort.
In a sector impacted significantly by the initial pandemic
shock and subsequent pivot, Zaworonok is perfectly positioned
to help guide students through both the challenges and opportunities
of current times.
Adhering to proven Selkirk College health and safety protocols,
the Silver King Campus Hair Salon is open for appointments
on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday between 9:30 a.m. and
3 p.m. With a full range of services available from cuts to perms
to colours, clients are immersed in a learning environment
packed with enthusiasm and careful consideration to detail.
Guided every step of the way by Zaworonok, the extra time
it takes sitting in the chair is rewarded by the appreciation students
have for the in-person client experience. During a time
lacking human interaction, it’s an opportunity to bring people
together.
spokesperson. “It’s been a
long road to get here, but we
couldn’t be more ecstatic to
with the community.”
With close to 1,000 separate
donations, meeting the
fundraising deadline represents
a huge milestone for
Nelson and area residents.
For decades the Cottonwood
Lake Regional Park has been
an important multi-season
destination for residents
and visitors alike. It’s also
an important environmental
win for the community as
grizzly bears, fish and other
wildlife use the lake and its
surrounding forests as a corridor
linking two significant
wilderness zones that have,
over the years, been heavily
affected by logging.
“We can’t thank the people
of our community enough,”
says Bruce Morrison, the
Society’s CFO and one of its
lead proponents. “From all
the volunteers, to the people
who directly worked on
the campaign, to the local
business community and
individuals from both here
by the outpouring of
support. This is a huge statement,
especially through
a pandemic. If people care
enough about something,
together they can make a
real difference.”
The CLPS now moves
into the process of purchasing
the land from the
landowner, which will be
done through the Regional
District Central Kootenay
(RDCK). The project then
moves towards appraising
and surveying the land in
preparation of handing it
over to a land trust where
it will be managed and protected
in perpetuity.
A huge thank you to
everyone who participated
in this campaign. Together
we’ve made a difference.
Ever wonder what happens
to recyclables?
Some of us have read bad
news answers to this question!
But, thanks to RecycleBC,
when we cooperate
by getting our acceptable
recyclables to collection
points, 94% is getting to
their end markets! Our significant
part is ensuring we
take care that nothing goes
in garbage and landfills, by
being informed what we can
put either in blue containers
for Village of Kaslo curbside
pickup, or collect carefully
to take to the RECYCLE
BC transfer station. Materials
collected then go to the
GFL(Green for Life: “waste
to energy”) site in Trail, for a
pre-sort and pre-scans; then
such scanned materials are
transported to Vancouver, to
be sorted for different facilities.
Similar materials are
baled together, then sold to
end markets to be made into
new packaging or products.
These primary end markets
for the majority of
materials, ensured by RecycleBC
are as follows: plastic
(BC); paper (U.S.Pacific
NW); metal (BC, Ontario,
U.S.); glass (BC). .
This January, the CPP
(Canada Plastics Pact:
plasticspact.ca) brought
together 40 diverse partners
representing leading
brands, waste management
companies, government
institutions, and non-governmental
organizations to
focus immediately on plastic
packaging (47% of the
total plastic waste) with the
welcome goal of creating a
circular economy in Canada
to keep plastic waste in
the economy and out of the
On January 18, Canada Post Corporation (CPC) announced
that 2020 was a record year for parcel delivery. Obviously, public
health measures had something to do with it. But parcel
delivery at CPC has been growing exponentially for the past
five years, and it shows no sign of slowing down.
With this kind of growth, a corporation like Canada Post
must roll up its sleeves and review its values, its commitment,
and the service portfolio it offers to the population, including
businesses. Canada Post already has the infrastructure and
the network it needs to be an integral part of the post-COVID
recovery and to become a leader in sustainable development.
In doing so, it would create jobs across the country and be part
of the government’s environmental plan, while also respecting
What if Canada Post was part of the post-COVID recovery?
its mandate to be financially self-sustaining.
To achieve this, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers
(CUPW) has launched a bold campaign called “Delivering
Community Power.”
Whether in the city or in the country, in remote areas or in
the suburbs, post offices are everywhere throughout Canada.
CPC has more than 6,400 outlets, the largest retail network in
the country.
CUPW proposes to accelerate the electrification of Canada
Post’s vehicle fleet. CPC operates more than 20,000 vehicles,
generating 65 kilotons of CO2 every year. The acquisition of
electric vehicles would benefit the environment, stimulate the
automotive sector and create decent jobs.
Now, imagine if Canada Post installed charging stations at
its facilities and made them available to all, creating the largest
network of charging stations in Canada. Imagine you are
driving on the highway or an isolated road, but the battery of
your electric car is running low. No more worries, because you
know you will find a charging station at the post office in the
next village.
COVID has brought to light the problem of high-speed
Internet access in hundreds of communities. With its extensive
presence in those communities, Canada Post could play a central
role perfectly in line with the government’s commitment
to bring high-speed Internet access to all communities. This
also fits with Canada Post’s mission, because it supports online
shopping, and online shopping fuels parcel delivery.
In 62 countries, the post office also provides banking services.
Canada’s extensive postal network could also provide
crucial banking services, especially in remote, rural and Indigenous
communities, which have been abandoned by major
banks. Did you know that there are only 66 bank branches in
all 700 First Nation communities? A postal bank would have
the power to reinvest in communities through infrastructure
or social housing, for instance. In addition, a more inclusive
postal bank would reduce the dependence of thousands of
workers on payday lenders and their usurious interest rates.
Finally, imagine letter carriers knocking at the door of someone
who lives alone. They could offer this check-in service at
the request of a family member who could receive a notification
saying that everything is fine, or that help has been called
in the case of an emergency. The postal service in France and
Japan already offers this service.
My 56,000 brothers and sister from CUPW will not accept
that Canada Post is sitting idly, refusing to change its old values
and habits. I urge you to contact your Member of Parliament
to demand a strong postal service for the future. It’s up to you!
