Letter from
LEADERSHIP
Dear Friends,
The impact of a three-month government-mandated
shutdown and ongoing pandemic have been devastating.
Our revenue was reduced by 40% in 2020 and we had
no choice but to lay off 60% of our talented staff team
members to stay afloat. Member visits to the YMCA
were down by 64% and many people placed their YMCA
memberships on hold. Childcare and summer camp
programming dropped by 38%.
Nonetheless, as these once unimaginable challenges
became devastating realities, our YMCA team charged
toward the front lines. We hosted blood drives to address
a nationwide shortage, organized food drives to ensure
no one went hungry, launched virtual group exercise
classes so everyone could remain active, established
virtual coffee hours for seniors, offered online family
activities and more.
Additionally, we reimagined and reinvented almost
every area of our operations to create the healthiest
environment possible. Staff were retrained in the latest
disease prevention protocols, equipment was relocated
throughout our facilities to provide for social distancing,
electro-static sprayers were purchased for thorough
disinfection, needle point bi-polar ionization units (which
neutralize viruses within minutes) were installed and
much more.
We’re here for good.
For more than 170 years, the YMCA has strengthened communities by connecting
people to their potential, purpose and each other. But 2020 was a year unlike any
other. We experienced isolation, loss, shutdowns, unemployment, food insecurity,
civil unrest and more.
In spite of the tremendous loss 2020 brought, we also
witnessed the tremendous strength of our community.
With you on our team, we accomplished more than we
ever could have imagined under these circumstances—
and thanks to your support, we continue to ensure that
everyone in our community can grow strong in spirit,
mind and body. Thank You.
We are—and will be—here for good.
With gratitude,
With parents working more than ever or not at all, activities canceled, school
taught through electronic devices and playdates a distant memory, the pandemic
has disrupted the lives of our children.
Parents are reporting signs of stress in their kids such as clinginess, irritability, sleep disruption,
fatigue and more. In 2020, emergency room visits for mental health concerns in children ages 5–11
rose 24% (Centers for Disease Control).
While worrisome, experts point out that kids are resilient, especially when parents and caregivers
help them through times of crisis by validating their feelings, ensuring they safely spend time with
peers and staying active.
That’s why when permitted to reopen last June, we were ready to offer childcare and camp with new
health and safety procedures in place at the YMCA. More than 1,000 children attended weekly—
and we had a great summer safely! We also began offering youth sports leagues and swim lessons again.
And in the fall, when many schools went to virtual learning, we quickly transformed parts of our YMCA
facilities into learning centers and have provided students with academic support, enrichment activities
and socialization opportunities ever since.
Additionally, we continue to offer financial assistance to those in our community who have a need. With
unemployment higher than ever, the need is great. But because of your generous donations, we’re able to
ensure that no one is turned away from the Y due to an inability to pay.
STAYING STRONG IN
SPIRIT, MIND AND BODY
Knowing the importance of staying strong in spirit, mind and body, the YMCA
of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) has worked rapidly to develop new ways to ensure
everyone can do this during the pandemic.
Within weeks of the government-ordered shutdown our team quickly began offering virtual group
exercise classes. Because these classes have continued gaining interest and growing in popularity,
we’ve expanded the number and variety of classes offered virtually. Those with an active YGBW
membership can access live and on demand classes at any time. Additionally, we’re offering
outdoor group exercise classes.
The pandemic changed our community in what seems like an instant,
creating overwhelming need. When the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
ordered a shutdown of all businesses, all branches of the YMCA of Greater
Brandywine were forced to close temporarily, but that didn’t mean our work
or mission stopped— far from it. We were just getting started.
We looked carefully at the needs the pandemic was creating in our community and acted.
We partnered with the American Red Cross and immediately began offering blood drives,
safely collecting over 730 donations in our YMCA branches which helped more than
2,190 patients.
We partnered with several local organizations including the Chester County Food Bank,
Kennett Area Community Services, Southern Chester County Opportunity Network, Square
Root Collective and the United Way of Chester County, to organize food drives. Together,
we collected more than 21,000 pounds of food that helped over 500 local families.
We’ve also launched Virtual Connections, a weekly series of 30-minute webinars on topics that help
viewers live an even more fulfilling life. Episodes have included maximizing health benefits, CPR
and First Aid basics, stress management and even how to eat a full meal with just vegetables!
Episodes are available both live and on demand for those with an active YGBW membership
at virtual.ymcagbw.org.
We created online family activities such as April Animal Madness, at-home STEM experiments
and wellness challenges. We partnered with AT&T to deliver internet hotspots to students in
our community without internet access so that they could complete their virtual schoolwork.
We organized virtual coffee hours to prevent seniors from facing isolation, even organizing a
drive-by celebration for a long-time YMCA member who turned 100 during the pandemic!
Last fall, lots of YGBW members jumped back into their regular workout routine with our four-week
“Back In Action at the Y” Challenge. And finally, at the end of 2020, we partnered with more than 150
YMCA Associations across the United States to participate in three wellness challenges in 2021. The first
challenge which began this past February, had more than 1,800 people from the Chester County community
signed up!
Though it was an immensely difficult year, we were challenged to mobilize our mission in new and
unexpected ways. Helping our community through these unprecedented times has been incredible
and we look forward to continuing to help everyone recover.
2020 YMCA SERVICE TO YOUTH AWARD
The Service to Youth Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose dedication and effort have made a significant and
positive difference in the lives of children in our community.
Bill and Janet Lasko
Bill and Janet Lasko are integral to
the YMCA’s commitment of providing
every child with the opportunity to
learn, grow and thrive. Their support
enables children to enjoy opportunities
such as attending sleep-away camp,
ensures youth programs like Believe and
Achieve, Power Scholars and Youth and
Government have needed resources and
makes it possible for the Y to
invest in critical needs such as a
behavioral specialist.
Additionally, the Laskos can often be
found volunteering at YMCA holiday and
camp events—even delivering pizza to
the kids on what has become known as
Pizza Friday. They have taken the time to
get to know the children—it is not a rare
occurrence to find Bill leading the kids in a
camp cheer!
Naturally embodying the YMCA’s mission,
we—as well as our community—are
fortunate for Bill and Janet’s commitment
to helping every child thrive.
2020 YMCA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes the effort and achievement of the YMCA’s most special friends and emphasizes the
need for community service by all our citizens. Recipients of this award have set a standard of leadership that others follow.
Daryl Thomas
2020 YMCA COMMUNITY PARTNER AWARD
The Community Partner Award recognizes an organization or group that has demonstrated a commitment to the YMCA’s mission
and values and has partnered with or supported the Y in outreach initiatives that strengthen the foundations of our community.
Advantage Building & Facility Services, LLC
For more than two decades,
Daryl Thomas, Advisor to the
CEO and Senior Vice President
of Strategic Opportunities at
Herr’s Foods, has generously
shared his time, talent and
treasure with the YMCA of
Greater Brandywine (YGBW).
As a member of YGBW’s Board of
Directors, his insight and experience
have been critical to ensuring our
longevity and sustainability, especially
during the pandemic. In addition to
sharing his professional expertise,
Daryl also invests his heart. “I love
the Y mission, the WHOLE mission,
and want to support youth through
mentoring programs and by giving
them a safe, fun place to grow and
thrive,” he says.
Even when Daryl learned that
we were honoring him with our
Distinguished Service Award, he
responded selflessly, “I am honored to
represent the great spirit of service
and dedication typical of so many
YMCA staff and volunteers. I accept
this honor on behalf of all of us.” We
couldn’t be prouder to honor Daryl
with our Distinguished Service Award.
For many years, Advantage Building
& Facility Services, LLC, a successful
and forward-thinking real estate
firm, has embraced the YMCA’s
cause of strengthening all in Chester
County in both words and deeds.
The company has generously
supported YMCA programs such
as LIVESTRONG, which helps those
living with, through and beyond
cancer grow strong.
With a unique understanding of
commercial property management and
maintenance, Trish Faidiga, owner of
Advantage Building & Facility Services, LLC,
is an indispensable advisor who serves on
the YMCA of Greater Brandywine’s Board
of Directors. Trish and members of her
team also often assist in the planning of
many of our fundraising events.
In 2020, as the pandemic caused
temporary closures and financial
uncertainty for the Y, Advantage stepped
up once again, providing unrestricted
operating support to YGBW. “The support
and expertise that Trish and her company
have generously shared is invaluable to the
YMCA and truly enables us to be here for
good,” says Denise Day, YGBW President
and CEO.
