From the Principal
Fr Paul Cahill, O.Carm.
Having celebrated the passion, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus throughout the Easter season, the Church
brings the celebration of this season to its climax this Sunday with the Feast of Pentecost. On this day, we celebrate
the gift of the Holy Spirit, with which Christ has endowed us.
The gift of the Spirit is seen as the fulfillment of the Easter promise of bringing us new, glorious and eternal life. The
Spirit enlivens us to be Christ to our world in our day. The Spirit enables us to be instruments of peace and unity in our
world and acts as a force in our world for unity and peace.
As a force for peace and unity, the Spirit impels us to be people of mercy and forgiveness, people of reconciliation,
people of tolerance and understanding, people of passion, energy, drive and conviction, people who have the good of
others and the good of our world at heart – people who are committed to Christ’s command to love one another as
God has loved us.
On this Feast of Pentecost, we give thanks for the gift of the Spirit. We pray that we will allow this Spirit, whom we
have received at Baptism, to blossom and have its effect in our hearts and in our lives so that its fruits will come more
fully to life in our world. We pray for our Church - that we will be a more effective witness to the life of the Spirit in our
world. We pray for our world – that it will reveal the life of the Spirit within it by the growth of peace and unity among
all people and by the respect which all creation is given.
Of recent times, students and staff involved in the performing arts have been very busy. Apart from providing
excellent music and singing at the Blessing and Opening of the Chapel, many were also involved in the Sacred Music
Concert at Hamer Hall last Tuesday night. They joined students from about forty Catholic Secondary Schools
throughout Victoria to present this most enjoyable , high quality concert. Two Year 11 students, Kristian Bressanutti
and Stephen Rossitto were among the few chosen to sing solo parts. Well done to all concerned. In addition to these
demanding events, the House Music Festival has been conducted at lunchtimes this week and students have put on
great performances to very appreciative audiences. On Thursday night, one of the highlights of the semester – the
Rock concert – was held and last Friday the VCE Theatre Studies class presented a very entertaining performance of the
play, Full House. All this is happening whilst rehearsals for the 2010 Whitefriars-Siena production of the musical Beauty
and the Beast are proceeding.
NAPLAN tests for Year 9 were completed during the week and first semester exams are looming in less than two weeks
for students in Years 9 – 12. I trust that all students are appropriately focused on the work they need to be doing in
order to perform to the best of their ability in their exams and complete coursework requirements to the highest
standard they can for this first semester.
Congratulations to all students representing the College in ACC football and soccer this term. As we approach finals,
many teams are strongly placed. Our First XVIII football team continued their excellent season to date with a strong
win over De La Salle College on Wednesday. It was the last game for these boys on the magnificent Whitefriars main
oval and they revelled in the excellent conditions. We wish them well for their game against St Joseph’s Geelong next
week – and then for the finals and the Herald-Sun Shield.
It was good to see the strong representation of Whitefriars in the third round of the current DAV Debating season last
Tuesday night. Well done to all students concerned – and to the staff who coach them. Results are detailed elsewhere
in this newsletter.
Our best wishes are extended to Kieren Pinto (8A3) as he competes in the Regional Finals of the Legacy Junior Public
Speaking competition next Wednesday and to Ben Soraghan (12E3) and Shivesh Datta (12S4) who are representing
Whitefriars in the regional final of the 2010 VCAA Plain English Speaking Award next Thursday.
I urge the support of the Parents’ Association’s involvement in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea by anyone with a free
morning next Thursday, 27 May. This is the Parents’ Association’s contribution to the Anti Cancer Council’s fundraising
efforts. It will be held in the Functions Room at the College at 10.30am.
I commend the Whitefriars Environment Group on their initiative in promoting a Paperless Day at the College next
Friday, 28 May. I hope students and staff get behind this initiative and reflect on ways in which they might conserve
precious environmental resources.
Finally, I commend to your thoughts and prayers the grandfathers of Justin Wyncoll (12S7), Andrew (12C4) and
Stephen (10C6) Gale and Douglas McQuillan (9S2) who died recently. May they rest in peace.
Year 7 Lisieux Walk-a-thoners with Lisieux Vice
Captain, Liam Hardy.
From the Captains
Page 2 Issue 12 21 May, 2010
Once again, it has been an eventful week at Whitefriars College, with all of the Year 9 to 12 students preparing for their
midyear exams which are coming up in the near future. The Chapel is now fully open, with many classes enjoying
their first mass in the Chapel itself, while experiencing the beautiful views and architecture.
On another note, the senior dodge ball semi-final went underway last Friday, with the winning team set to play the
teacher’s doge ball team in a fortnight. The game was a great spectacle and good fun for all involved. The SRC also
had a BBQ for the dodge ball final, with the proceeds helping the SRC pay for the Piano that they are donating to the
Chapel.
On Monday at lunchtime we also had the House ‘solo’ music competition, which had a great turn out, the Theatre was
packed out! The winner for the competition was Danny Oltvai from Brandsma House, with an enthralling drum solo.
The House ‘band’ music competition is scheduled for Friday at lunchtime.
Also a Congratulations to the members of the College Choir who performed at last night’s Sacred Music Concert at
Hamer Hall. You all represented the College well. Special congratulations to Kristian Bressanutti and Steven Rossitto of
Year 11 who sang their solos with confidence and exceptional musicality.
Lisieux Walkathon
Jack Streefkerk, Benjamin Soraghan, Darcy Spence and Wayne McMahon
College Captains
Last Friday 14 May, twenty six Year 7 Lisieux students took part in a walk-a-thon on the College’s soccer pitch to raise
money for our House charity “Beyond Blue”, which attempts to bring awareness of youth depression to the wider
community.
The walk-a-thon quickly turned into a run-a-thon, to see who could do as many laps of the pitch as possible.
Ben Richardson, Liam Smith and Riley Tubbs won this race with a grand total of twenty six laps.
Overall, it was a great success and the morning was enjoyed by the lads, especially the morning tea which was
provided and then devoured in a matter of minutes.
Well done to all the boys on their effort and participation. We hope to raise a lot of money from this event and perhaps
even beat of record of $800 which was achieved last year. Go Eagles!!!
Haemoglobin Heroes this week...
Seven Haemoglobin Heroes attended the Blood Bank this week so that each could donate 470 ml of their blood to
save the lives of grateful although unknown recipients – that’s twenty one lives saved this week!
The Heroes were Matthew Clark, William Le, Thomas Soon, Zoltan Csernatony, Andrew Daou, Henrich Galam and
Damien Reyment.
All our donors were from Year 12 this week, and all donated cheerfully and without any problems, but they were
otherwise a varied group. They came from six different Houses (Avila, Corsini (2), Stein, Mantua, Soreth and Trinity), and
they had different histories of donating. Henrich made his first donation, Thomas and Andrew their second, Matthew
and William their third, Zoltan his fourth and Damien his eighth. Congratulations to all these donors, with a special
recognition of Damien’s great achievement. Mention must also be made of Andrew’s time as it was the fastest time for
a donation from this school to date: 5.03 minutes! Donations normally take between about seven to nine minutes; the
times are usually a little faster in summer than in the colder weather, and it also depends somewhat on how much
water has been drunk that morning. It is recommended that potential donors drink over 1 litre of water in the hours
before donating, as well as eating their normal meals and snacks. The Blood Bank provides refreshments afterwards for
its donors, including Big Ms, juice or soft drink and the popular cheese and biscuits, cake and chocolate and blueberry
muffins.
There are only 2 donating dates with vacancies left for this term - Tuesday 15 June and Thursday 24 June. Please see or
email Mrs Crossman to book a place; you just need to be 16 or over and in current good health. Dates for next
semester will be published soon.
Special people do special things – like donating blood and saving lives!
The name “Whitefriars”
refers to the mantle
worn over the habit of
the Carmelite priests
and brothers.
The Carmelites are
known as “White Friars”
because of their dress –
a white mantle worn
over a brown habit.
The white mantle is
linked with the Prophet
Elijah who wore a
similar garb, probably
of sheepskin.
The early hermits of
Mount Carmel adopted
this white mantle as a
symbol of their
devotion to Mary, the
mother of our Lord.
“Unless I go the Holy Spirit
will not come to you;
but if I do go,
I will send him to you.
He will lead you to the
complete truth.”
– John 16:7,13
With these words Jesus
points forward to the new life in the Spirit
that will be revealed at Pentecost.
It will be a life lived in ‘complete truth.’
Closely related to the word “betrothal,”
the “complete truth”
means full intimacy with God,
a betrothal in which the complete divine life is given to us.
Page 3 Issue 12 21 May, 2010
Mr John Abrahams
Director of Religious Education
As we wait for the Spirit to come, are we preparing ourselves for Pentecost, just as we would if we were preparing for
Christmas or Easter? For most of us, Pentecost is a nonevent. While on the secular calendars Christmas and Easter are
still marked, Pentecost is spectacularly absent.
But Pentecost is the coming of the Spirit of Jesus into the world. It is the celebration of God breaking through the
boundaries of time and space and opening the whole world for the re-creating power of love. Pentecost is freedom,
the freedom of the Spirit to blow where it wants.
Without Pentecost the Christ-event-the life, death and resurrection of Jesus-remains imprisoned in history as
something to remember, think about and reflect on. The Spirit of Jesus comes to dwell within us, so that we can
become living ‘Christs’ here and now. Pentecost lifts the whole mystery of salvation out of its particularities and makes
it into something universal, embracing all peoples, all countries, all seasons, and all eras. Pentecost is also the moment
of empowering. Each individual human being can claim the Spirit of Jesus as the guiding spirit of his or her life. In that
same Spirit we can speak and act freely and confidently with the knowledge that the same Spirit that inspired Jesus is
inspiring us.
We certainly have to prepare ourselves carefully for this feast so that we can not only receive fully the gifts of the Spirit
but also let the Spirit bear fruit within us.
And so we pray...
Almighty God,
you kindled this day the light of your Spirit
in the hearts of your faithful people;
may we by the same Spirit
have a right judgment in all things,
and evermore rejoice in your love and power;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour,
who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit,
one God now and for ever.
Amen.
Reflection is based on Henry Nouwen’s book: ‘The Road to Peace.’

What’s Your Viewpoint
Ms Catherine Wells
Head of English
That the NAPLAN tests should be banned as it will be used to measure school rankings on the controversial
“My School” website.
Background information
Debate has been sparked over the divisive NAPLAN examination which tests Years 3, 5, 7, 9 on a broad scale involving
literacy and numeracy type questions. With the results appearing on the “My School website” later this year, minority
groups argue that such statistics will enable Australian families and teachers likewise to rank schools. Ranking
therefore would degrade the less successful schools whilst promoting those that achieved excellence. Teachers
especially will be aggravated as questions may be asked concerning their teaching skills. Whilst many are discouraged
over the “My School” statistics, others support the website as it will clearly signify which schools should be given extra
funding to boost academic performance. What is your viewpoint?
Yes – they should be banned Mr Stuart Biggins – English Teacher
NAPLAN tests are not conducted on a level playing field. In order to improve their ranking on the “My School” website,
some schools coach their students (where does the time to do so come from!) while most schools simply administer
the tests cold turkey. Even within this latter category of schools there are the anomalies produced by some teachers
familiarising their students with the NAPLAN material ahead of the tests. Moreover, there have been media reports of
schools encouraging less able students to stay at home rather than sit the tests and having a negative impact on the
results. Teachers have been discovered doctoring their students’ work. How many have escaped detection?
Furthermore, the material that is put before students bears little resemblance to their day to day class work and this
often produces results wildly at odds with a student’s typical performances; some good students perform poorly and
some poor students perform exceptionally well. To add insult to injury, NAPLAN testing is an imposition, not only
taking away class time from teachers and students struggling anyway to cover a packed curriculum but disrupting the
established rhythms of the classroom forcing teachers to reschedule their programs. What a mess NAPLAN testing is!
What a travesty! To think that these results end up influencing already spurious “My School” tables! Ranking schools
using such shoddy results is actually a national disgrace. NAPLAN testing should be scrapped immediately!
No – they should not be banned Zoltan Csernatony – Year 12 Student (Debating Captain)
What is the world coming to? Are we continuing down the path of political correctness, in order to protect the
‘academically weaker schools”? We shouldn’t ban the NAPLAN tests as they form a fundamental aspect in recognising
the academic standards delivered at schools across Australia. Whilst Julia Gillard explicitly stated that the results on the
controversial “My School” website won’t be used as a comparison resource, I personally wouldn’t mind if they were.
With competition fierce to take out the number one position for academic excellence, schools should be significantly
motivated to aim for better results year after year. Life itself, for teenagers and adults alike, is bombarded with fierce
competition to perform better, either in the workplace or at school. VCE for Year 12s is an excellent example of a
system based on ranking. There is no doubt that every year, most VCE students commit themselves to perform at their
peak, ultimately to receive the score they require for further studies after leaving the College. Without such a ranking
system enforced, I believe many students would become lethargic. In a similar vein to the “My School” website, a
ranking system would pressure schools into attempting to pull greater results. Allow the NAPLAN testing to continue
as it will greatly benefit all schools. And to the minority groups who believe the NAPLAN testing imposes stress on a
child’s wellbeing, all I have to say: Get used to it! Tests and examinations will always play a key role in the development
of students and throughout their lives. The more practice the better!
VCE Theatre Studies Performance:
Full House
Last Friday 14 May the Whitefriars Theatre Studies class performed their well rehearsed play “Full House”. It was
performed in front of a packed crowd, who had nothing but rave reviews for the boys. The class was thankful to finally
put on this show after weeks and weeks of strenuous rehearsals. The performance itself, as well as how well it was run,
is a major part of the boys’ assessment, and so they were glad it all went to plan.
The show was entirely run by the students, from the acting, to lighting, sound, stage management – everything was
done for the students, by the students. With, of course, a little help from Mrs Nadia Lavelle, whom we thank for her
patience and hard work/input!
Overall the night was considered a great success, and many thanks must go to the whole class for their hard work, Mrs
Nadia Lavelle for her superb guidance, and Mr Brad Lavelle for supplying of boxes.
Futsal at Whitefriars
In case anyone is unsure what Futsal is, then let’s get the definition sorted first!
Futsal is a variant of football (soccer) that is played on a smaller playing surface and mainly played indoors. Its name is
derived from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol de salón (and colloquially fútbol sala), which can be
translated as "hall football." During the sport's second World Championships held in Madrid in 1985, the name fútbol
de salón was used. Since then, all other names have been officially and internationally changed to futsal.
Futsal is played between two teams of five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutes per team are
permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines;
walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation football. The
rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.
About two months ago an open invitation was given to all students, who were interested in playing Futsal, to come to
a meeting and then start training sessions. The response was good and Whitefriars had enough keen and skilful
players to create three teams - Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19.
Training and coaching was almost exclusively early in the morning before school for an hour and all three teams
started to understand the game and how it needs to be played. All three teams were then entered into the Vikings
Regional Futsal Championships held in Oakleigh during the week beginning Monday 3 May.
Despite being up against some experienced teams and sports academy schools all three teams tried their hardest.
Unfortunately only the Junior team (Under 15) managed to reach a semi final position where they lost 4-1 to Rowville
Secondary College (soccer academy school).
Considering this was the first time many of the boys at Whitefriars had ever played Futsal, let alone played at
competition level, this was a gallant effort. The top four sides go through to the State Champion of Champions
competition at each age group and as the Under 15s achieved this they will go to the state competition later this year.
Thanks to all the early morning starts by the boys and also to Ms Taryn Bates who helped out on the day of
competition.
Paperless Day
Page 7 Issue 12 21 May, 2010
Next Friday 28 May, the Environment Group has asked teachers to pledge to avoid using paper (such as worksheets,
handouts, student bulletin) in their classes. ‘Unfortunately’, to all students, this doesn’t mean that we can’t use
textbooks or workbooks.
The purpose of this activity is to promote reducing paper consumption at school and at home. Reducing paper
consumption reduces deforestation which results in forest available to convert CO2 from other pollution producers
into oxygen. Around the world we use around 1 million tons of paper every day. To make 1 ton of paper, 17 thirty year
old trees are killed. Twenty percent of the world’s population consume 87 percent of the world’s printing and writing
papers. The average annual consumption of paper and paperboard per person in the world is 54kg.
Some ways in which we could all save paper at home are:
• Cut down on paper waste.
• Subscribe to electronic versions of your magazines.
• Use e-mails instead of paper letters or memos and reduce the number of messages you print out.
• Do not use disposable goods. Paper cups, cardboard plates, etc.
• When you go to a restaurant, don't take more napkins than the ones you need. (Do you really need that
many?)
• Sign up for electronic billing statements instead of companies mailing you paper statements. Companies save
too.
• Use both sides of paper for unimportant print outs.
• Think before you print. (Print out only what is absolutely necessary)
• Buy products made from recycled paper only. (Read the boxes)
Year 10 Drugs and Disease Class
On Friday 7 May, the Year 10 Drugs and Disease class was visited by ex student, Peter Morris who is currently studying
medicine at Monash University.
Peter provided the class with many useful and interesting ideas about studying medicine and provided his outlook on
his profession as a doctor. He explained many of the rewarding, inspirational and amazing features of medicine. Peter
showed the class pictures and diagrams relating to his study and introduced the topic of cancer, giving a brief
overview and some fascinating statistics.
Peter Morris graduated at Whitefriars in 2004. He began studying medicine the following year at Monash. Peter took a
year off his medicine studies and took part in an optional research year. He will now gain a medical research degree
alongside his degree in medicine.
Cross Country All Schools Relays
This weekend, eleven teams will represent the College in the Victorian All Schools Relays at Jells Park. It is a very strong
representation and by far our biggest from our squad. We are looking forward to see our U/13 boys run for the first
time in teams of four with each boy running 3kms.
We have four teams in the middle age group led by Hamish Cocks as well as four senior teams with Brendan Doyle,
Mitch Malt, Cameron Hunter and James Murphy in Team 1.
Cross Country Captain Nick Ellis and myself are confident of a good showing from everyone. The race times are 10am
and 11.30am. All boys have received information at school. Good luck to all these boys and results will be published
next week.
The season has only just begun with training starting 2 weeks ago and going by the number of boys at training, we are
looking to have a very successful year. The team has a goal of finishing in the top three in the ACC Championships
which are held in September.
Tom Kelly, (our coach), has been very impressed with the enthusiasm of the boys so early in the season. Training is on
Monday nights at 3.30pm and Thursday mornings at 7.15am. Canteen menus are available in the gym foyer. We are
planning to have some sessions at Doncaster Athletics Track and Ruffey Lake Park.
All major dates coming up for our season are:
Saturday 22 May- All schools Relays (Jell’s Park, 10am)
Saturday 5 June- Road Relays (Albert Park, 10am)
Saturday 17 July- Victorian Championships (Bundoora Park, 10am)
Monday 9 August- Practice Carnival (Jell’s Park) TBC
Cybersafety
Safe Social Networking
Page 9 Issue 12 21 May, 2010
Mr Brad Bird
Head of Corsini House
This week in Cybersafety we will explore the concepts of Safe Social Networking and the Network Sites.
What is Social Networking?
Social networking describes the multitude of ways that people can connect with one another online. For many, social
networking is a way of keeping in touch with friends and family, sharing pictures, ideas, latest news and much more.
What are social networking services?
Social networking services are online services which allow users to share aspects of their lives with friends –as well as
strangers – and to provide creative contributions through writing, photography, digital art and more. Some examples
of social networking include:
• Creating profiles on sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Bebo.
• Blogging on sites such as Blogger, LiveJournal and Xanga.
• Video sharing on sites such as YouTube and Google Video.
• Photo sharing on sites such as Flickr and Fotolog
• Bookmark sharing on sites such as Digg and del.icio.us
• Microblogging on sites such as Twitter and Jaiku
• Making friends in Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG’s) such as Runescape and World of Warcraft
• Instant messaging (IM) or chatting in most social networking websites.
Publishing on the internet provides access to a global audience, is fun and allows people to connect and share
unrestricted environment. While it is very attractive to young people, there are risks in posting information on line.
Common Safety Issues
There are a number of safety issues in using social networking services. To keep safe:
• Be aware that content published online is available for anybody to view. Once published, it can be difficult to
remove.
• Do not publish content on websites that you wouldn’t want other people to see.
• Recognise that other people may view your personal information and use it for unauthorized purposes.
• Always ask to post photos or work of other people. Acknowledge their work, and add a reference to it.
• Keep passwords secret and don’t give them out to anybody, even closest friends.
• Use good online behavior/netiquette-treat people in the online world as you would in everyday life.
Things to avoid
Keeping safe online is a matter of being aware of the risks and behaving appropriately. Don’t publish information that
can be identifiable, such as:
• Full name.
• Home address and email address.
• Telephone or mobile number.
• The full names of family members and friends.
• School or work details.
Places to Get Help
• Kids Help Line on 1800 551 800 or online at www.kidshelp.com.au/teens/get-help/web-counselling.
• A teacher, parent or a trusted adult.
• Cybersafety Contact Centre, on 1800 880 176 for general Cybersafety information.
• Contact police on Triple Zero (000) if there is a threat to safety.
• The College if the issue is school related (9872 8200).
Please remember communication with your boys as to what they are doing online is vital. Please don’t leave boys in
their rooms with their notebooks, you can never know what they are up to. The College promotes positive online
behavior with its students. This is the ability to develop positive, appropriate and constructive online relationships with
peers, family and strangers in a variety of mediums. It includes concepts such as netiquette, appropriate contact and
communication with others, and issues such as Cyberbullying, problematic usage and unethical behavior.
A reminder that as College policy students cannot access Facebook and MySpace on the College network.

The season goes very quickly and our Seniors are already at the end with their last game coming up next week.
The 1 st XI are finishing strongly despite several injuries and did very well to draw with Parade despite being
undermanned. Next week the 1 st XI will play off for 9 th placing after finishing 5 th in their division. Despite scoring 3
goals the 2 nd XI lost to one of the top two teams, St Bernard’s. A win in their final game next week against Parade could
see us finish in 3 rd place. The Year 10s continued to win and play their last game next week knowing they are already
through to the Grand Final. In Year 9 we lost 4-3 to the top team, Salesian, and with 3 rounds to go will be looking to
push up into the top half of the ladder from our current 5 th position. In Year 8 we struggled to find the net while our
opponents in both games took their chances. The Year 7 (Division 1) team scored their first win after surrendering a
3-1 lead and then pinching it back with a goal in the last minute. The Division 2 boys played well but couldn’t get the
ball in the back of the net as Parade took control.
