Foda played for Austrian side Sturm
Graz against Rangers in a Champions
League opening-group stage game at
Ibrox in September 2000.
He, along with the rest of the visiting
team, endured a tough night as the Ibrox
side ran riot in a thumping 5-0 win. But
Graz got the last laugh, winning 2-0 in
the return game the following month
and ultimately topping the group and
going through to the knockout stages.
“Well, the memories of the defeat in
Glasgow are not the best, as you can
probably imagine,” said Foda. “In the
second leg, however, we set it right and
advanced from the group.”
“I remember Gordon Strachan very
well,” he said. “I was impressed,
especially by his running ability and his
aggressiveness.”
That was Foda’s final season as a
player and he moved seamlessly
into coaching with the club. He was
caretaker boss when Sturm Graz played
Livingston in the first round of the UEFA
Cup in 2002, which turned out to be a
free-scoring tie.
