SCOTLAND v AUSTRIA / EUROPEAN QUALIFIERS / FIFA 2022 WORLD CUP ULTRAVOX AND TARTAN DOCS Scotland fan Tam Coyle looks back on his travels including several trips to Austria I started going to Hampden Park for the old Home Internationals in 1975, ‘borrowing’ my sister’s Bay City Rollers scarf, which has been at every Scotland game with me since. Being Glasgow-based I’m lucky in that I have only missed a handful of home games in the last 46 years. I’m also fortunate that following Scotland has taken me all over the world with Austria a favourite country for a rather simple reason which we will get to later. My first away game was in the back of a transit van with a dozen other Clydebank fans to Cardiff in 1985, and it is a night that no-one who was there will ever forget. A former Bankies player, the late Davie Cooper, scored the penalty in the 1-1 draw against Wales that got us to the 1986 World Cup play-offs, but it was the night that we lost big Jock Stein, who died at the final whistle. My first trip outside the UK was when I signed up with the legendary Partick Thistle International Travel Section, the forerunner of the West Of Scotland Tartan Army (WESTA), with whom I have travelled with for the majority of my away trips ever since. We travelled by bus from Glasgow to Luxembourg in December 1987 for the last game of the disappointing campaign when we failed to qualify for the 1988 European Championship. And what a trip. We got to Dover and just managed to get the last ferry to Calais before the port closed, as it was blowing a Force 8 gale, and the crossing was hellish. It was the last thing a bus full of Tartan Army needed after a 10- hour journey from Glasgow and a large percentage of the passengers lost the contents of their stomach on board. Around 300 Scots watched a dreadful 0-0 draw which, if my memory is correct, was Luxembourg’s first point in a qualifier for 16 years! The biggest positive was the friendships that were formed with at least two people on that bus that I still travel with nearly 40 years later.
