SCOTLAND v AUSTRIA / EUROPEAN QUALIFIERS / FIFA 2022 WORLD CUP
HANDBAGS
AND RED RAGS
The history of tonight’s fixture includes an unusual pitch
invasion and abandoned Hampden clash
28
Scotland begin their World Cup
qualifying campaign with a triple
header. A home game against Austria
tonight kicks off the quest for Qatar
2022, before a trip to Israel and then
a return to Hampden Park to face the
Faroe Islands, all within a week.
The last time the Scots played Das Team
was in a friendly in May 2007 - and
they were due to play the Faroe Islands
the week later in a 2008 European
Championship qualifier.
As a reminder of how time flies in
football, Rangers goalkeeper Allan
McGregor, then in his first spell with the
Ibrox club, made his international debut
against the Austrians and two more
Gers players, Charlie Adam and Alan
Hutton, replaced Shaun Maloney and
Graham Alexander to make their first
appearances for their country.
However, it was a man returning to
the international scene, striker Garry
O’Connor, who grabbed the headlines
when he bagged the only goal of the
game in the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium.
The Lokomotiv Moscow striker had been
welcomed back into the international
fold by Alex McLeish after going AWOL
