SPEAKING IN TONGUES
IS FOR ALL.
THESE ARE Paul’s words.
He says to the church in Corinth,
[1 Corinthians 14:18]
I thank my God, I SPEAK IN
TONGUES MORE THAN YOU ALL ...
Does this mean that all members of the
church in Corinth spoke in tongues?
All—as in every one?
Yes.
In Mark 16, Jesus said that speaking in
tongues is a sign that follows all who
believe.
We see that in the book of Acts.
We see that speaking in tongues is an
accompanying sign that happens when
people receive the Holy Spirit.
For example, on the day of Pentecost.
All who received the Holy Spirit on that
day also spoke in tongues.

This sets the standard.
That is why we also see everyone in Acts
10 receive the Holy Spirit and speak in
tongues.
A whole household.
We also see the disciples in Ephesus in
Acts 19 receive the Holy Spirit and all
speak in tongues.
In the letters of the apostles, we also
see that all the believers also spoke in
tongues.
As we’ve said, Paul said to the
Corinthians,
[1 Corinthians 14:18]
I thank my God, I SPEAK IN
TONGUES MORE THAN YOU ALL ...
But not just all the members of the church
in Corinthian spoke in tongues.
All the members of the other churches
spoke in tongues as well.
That’s what we can glean from the letters
of the apostles.
In Romans, Paul talks about how the Holy
Spirit helps us when we pray in tongues.
In 1st Corinthians, Paul talks much about
speaking in tongues and spiritual gifts.

In Ephesians, Paul instructs the Ephesian
believers to pray in tongues at all times.
In his letter, Jude instructs the believers to
build themselves up by praying tongues.

1 SPEAKING IN

ACCOMPANYING SIGN.
ACCORDING to Jesus.
It is for all believers.
Before He ascended, Jesus said,
[Mark 16:17]
And these signs will follow THOSE
WHO BELIEVE: ... THEY WILL SPEAK
WITH NEW TONGUES ...
When Jesus said this at the end of the
book of Mark, this was not yet happening.
But then, once Jesus was glorified and
poured ou the Holy Spirit we see these
things happening.
In the book of Acts.
The book of Acts as our gold standard.
In Acts, we also see that all believers
received the Holy Spirit, and also spoke in
tongues as an accompanying sign.

2 WHEN PEOPLE
RECEIVE THE HOLY
SPIRIT, THEY WILL
ALSO SPEAK IN
TONGUES.
IN THE BOOK of Acts, there are 4
accounts that tell us exatly what happened
when people received the Holy Spirit.
In 3 of those 4 accounts, the book of Acts
says that they also spoke in tongues.
In Acts 2:
[Acts 2:4]
And they were all filled with the Holy
Spirit and BEGAN TO SPEAK WITH
OTHER TONGUES, as the Spirit gave
them utterance.
In Acts 10:
[Acts 10:44-46]
44 While Peter was still speaking these

words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all
those who heard the word.
45 And those of the circumcision who
believed were astonished, as many as
came with Peter, because the gift of
the Holy Spirit had been poured out on
the Gentiles also.
46 For THEY HEARD THEM SPEAK
WITH TONGUES and magnify God. ...
In Acts 19:
[Acts 19:6]
And when Paul had laid hands on them,
the Holy Spirit came upon them, and
they SPOKE WITH TONGUES and
prophesied.
In one more account, it says that a
bystander could see when people received
the Holy Spirit.
[Acts 8:17-18]
17 Then [Peter and John] laid hands
on them, and they received the Holy
Spirit.
18 And when Simon SAW that through
the laying on of the apostles’ hands the
Holy Spirit was given ...

So there must have been an accompanying
sign.

3 BUT THERE ARE
DIFFERENT TYPES OF
SPEAKING IN TONGUES.
THERE IS the accompanying sign of of
tongues, according to Jesus in Mark 16:
[Mark 16:17]
And these SIGNS WILL FOLLOW those
who believe: ... THEY WILL SPEAK
WITH NEW TONGUES ...
The sign of tongues is for all believers.
It is a prayer language.
We can use it to build ourselves up.
This is what Jude tells us to do.
[Jude 17-21]
17 You, beloved, remember the words
which were spoken before by the
apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ:
18 how they told you that there would
be mockers in the last time who would
walk according to their own ungodly
lusts.

19 These are sensual persons, who
cause divisions, not having the Spirit.
20 BUT YOU, BELOVED, BUILDING
YOURSELVES UP ON YOUR MOST
HOLY FAITH, PRAYING IN THE HOLY
SPIRIT,
21 keep yourselves in the love of God,
looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus
Christ unto eternal life.
But there is also another type of tongues:
the gift of tongues, according to Paul in 1
Corinthians 12.
[1 Corinthians 12:8,10]
... for to one is given ... , TO ANOTHER
DIFFERENT KINDS OF TONGUES, TO
ANOTHER THE INTERPRETATION
OF TONGUES.
The gift of tongues in 1 Corinthians 12
is a gift of the Holy Spirit that the Holy
Spirit distributes as He wills.
It goes together with the gift of
interpretation of tongues.
So, all believers who have received the
Holy Spirit speak in tongues for personal
edification.

But not all believers also operate in the
gift of tongues.
I deal with question extensively in one of

4 A SUPERNATURAL
ACITVITY.
SPEAKING IN tongues is by nature a
supernatural acitivity.
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14:2:
[1 Corinthians 14:2]
FOR HE WHO SPEAKS IN A TONGUE
DOES NOT SPEAK TO MEN BUT
TO GOD, for no one understands
him; however, in the spirit he speaks
mysteries.
The word “mysteries” here means hidden
truths.
So when we speak in tongues we are
speaking divine mysteries.
It is a spiritual activity because we are
speaking in the spirit.
When we are speaking in a normal
language we use to communicate with
other people.
In that case, our mind is heavily involved.

Because before we can speak in a known
language, we need to have learned it.
And then we use it to talk to other people.
But when we are speaking in tongues, we
don’t speak to other people.
We are speaking to God.
We don’t understand the language.
And others also don’t understand it.
Because we are not talking to them.
We are talking to God.
Dyvine mysteries.
In the spirit.
That means when we speak in tongues our
spirit is involved, not our mind.
That is why speaking in tongues will
offend the mind.
Because our mind is so used to running
the show of our lives.
But we are speaking in tongues, we are
placing ourselves in the spirit by an act of
our will.
So speaking in tongue, by nature is a
supernatural acitivity.
It is an extermly useful transformation
tool.

These are some of the benefits of speaking
in tongues:
- When we speak in tongues, we are
priming ourselfin the spirit realm.
- When we speak in tongues, we become
more attuned to the Holy Spirit.

priming ourself in the spirit realm.

needs to step aside and let the spirit take
over.
- When we speak in tongues, we speak to
God what is troubling us in our heart.

building ourselves up on our most holy

6 ALL THE FIRST
BELIEVERS ON THE DAY
OF PENTECOST SPOKE
IN TONGUES
THE CHURCH burst unto the scene on
the day of Pentecost with a bang.
The disciples were all filled with liquid
fire from above.
Holy Spirit fire.
And they spoke in tongues.
All.
[Acts 2:2-4]
2 When the Day of Pentecost had fully
come, they were all with one accord in
one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound
from heaven, as of a rushing mighty
wind, and it filled the whole house
where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided
tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon

each of them.
4 And THEY WERE ALL FILLED WITH
THE HOLY SPIRIT AND BEGAN TO
SPEAK WITH OTHER TONGUES, as
the Spirit gave them utterance.
All 120 of them.

7 ALL THE FIRST NON-
JEWS WHO RECEIVED
THE GOSPEL SPOKE IN
TONGUES.
PETER was the first person to preach the
gospel to non-Jews.
The household of the Roman centurion,
Cornelius.
Then, when Peter preached the Holy
Spirit fell on all who heard Peter’s word.
All received the Holy Spirit and spoke in
tongues.
[Acts 10:44-46]
44 While Peter was still speaking
these words, THE HOLY SPIRIT
FELL UPON ALL THOSE WHO
HEARD THE WORD. 45 And those
of the circumcision who believed were
astonished, as many as came with
Peter, because the gift of the Holy
Spirit had been poured out on the
Gentiles also.

But how did they know?
It says in the next verse,
46 For they heard them speak with
tongues and magnify God.
All the first disciples clearly understood
that receiving the Holy Spirit and
speaking in tongues goes together.
And they understood that when people
hear the gospel, they ought to receive it by
getting baptized.
Believing and getting baptized also goes
together.
According to Jesus in Mark 16:
[Mark 16:15]
... Go into all the world and preach the
gospel to every creature. 16 He who
BELIEVES AND IS BAPTIZED will be
saved ...
That is why in Acts we always that
when people believe the gospel, they get
baptized.
Like in Acts 8, for example.
[Acts 8:12]
But WHEN THEY BELIEVED Philip as

he preached the things concerning the
kingdom of God and the name of Jesus
Christ, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN
WERE BAPTIZED. ...
All the early believer clearly understood
this.
So that is why Peter then says,
[Acts 10:47-48]
47 “Can anyone forbid water, that
these should not be baptized who have
received the Holy Spirit just as we
have?”
48 And he commanded them to be
baptized in the name of the Lord. Then
they asked him to stay a few days.
Take note: Peter says,
[Acts 10:47]
“... these ... have received the Holy
Spirit just as we have?”
The first disciples received the Holy Spirit
like those first non-Jewish believers.
They also all spoke in tongues.

8 ALL THE EPHESIANS
RECEIVED THE HOLY
SPIRIT AND SPOKE IN
TONGUES, AFTER THEY
MET PAUL
BEFORE PAUL came to them, the
Ephesians were not yet converted.
They had not heard the gospel yet.
They heard the gospel from Paul.
(Ephesians 1:13)
Then they trusted in Christ.
They believed and got baptized.
[Acts 19:5
When they heard this, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And then they received the Holy Spirit.
And also spoke in tongues.
All twelve.

the Holy Spirit came upon them, and
THEY SPOKE WITH TONGUES and

9 PAUL INSTRUCTED
ALL THE EPHESIANS TO
SPEAK IN TONGUES
IN HIS LETTER to the Ephesians, Paul
then also talks about praying in tongues.
He instructs them in the context of
spiritual warfare to be
[Ephesians 6:18]
praying always with all prayer
and supplication in the Spirit,
being watchful to this end with all
perseverance and supplication for all
the saints ...
Would the Ephesians have understood
what Paul was talking about?
Certainly.
Because it was Paul who etablished them
in the gospel.
We read about this in Acts 19.
They didn’t have the Holy Spirit yet when

Paull met them.
So he needed to preach to them.
And then baptize them unto the name of
Jesus.
And then when he laid hands on them,
that’s when they received the Holy Spirit.
And also spoke in tongues.
We read,
[Acts 19:5-6]
5 When they heard this, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid hands on
them, THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME
UPON THEM, AND THEY SPOKE
WITH TONGUES and prophesied.
So, of course, the Ephesians clearly
understood what Paul was talking about,
when he talked about praying in tongues.

10 ALL THE
CHURCHES THAT PAUL
ESTABLISHED SPOKE
IN TONGUES
PAUL WAS an apostle.
He helped believers to experience a true
conversion.
So he helped them also to receive the
Holy Spirit.
Like in the case of the Ephesians.
So, in all churches that Paul established,
all believers had received the Holy Spirit
and also spoke in tongues.
So when Paul wrote to them about
speaking in tongues, they understood
what he was talking about.
For example, when Paul wrote to the
Corinthians, he said,
[1 Corinthians 14:18]
I thank my God, I SPEAK IN

Does this mean that all Corinthians spoke
in tongues (for self-edification)?
Yes, certainly.
That’s what Jesus said in Mark 16:
[Mark 16:17]

WHEN WE pray with tongues, we build
ourselves up.
This is what Jude tells us.
He says,

Paul said to the Corinthians,

Paul knew about the transformative power
of tongues.
So keep speaking in tongues.
Keep singing in tongues.
[1 Corinthians 14:15]
I will pray with the spirit, and I will also
pray with the understanding. I will sing
with the spirit, and I will also sing with
the understanding.
Do both.

Pray in understanding and sing in
understanding.
And pray in tongues, and sing in tongues.

13 OF COURSE, WE
NEED TO BE WISE
WHEN AND HOW WE
PRAY IN TONGUES.
OF COURSE, we need to employ
common sense when and where and how
we pray with tongues.
We can pray with tongues at all times
whenever we want to.
But it is wise to do it in such a way that
people who do not know what it is will
not be taken back by it.
In other words, we need to walk in love.
For example, Paul says that if a group of
believers is together and people who are
uninformed or pre-believing walk in, we
need to be concerned about them.
If we are not catering to them, and we
speak in tongues in a way that may shock
them, they might think that we are mad.
Paul instructs the Corinthians in this
matter.

Paul says,
[1 Corinthians 14:23-25]
23 Therefore IF THE WHOLE
CHURCH COMES TOGETHER IN
ONE PLACE, AND ALL SPEAK WITH
TONGUES, AND THERE COME IN
UNINFORMED OR UNBELIEVERS,
WILL THEY NOT SAY THAT YOU ARE
OUT OF YOUR MIND?
24 But if all prophesy, and an
unbeliever or an uninformed person
comes in, he is convinced by all, he is
convicted by all.
25 And thus the secrets of his heart are
revealed; and so, falling down on his
face, he will worship God and report
that God is truly among you.
If we are by ourselves, we can speak with
tongues in any way we want to.
Quietly.
At the top of our voice.
However, way we feel led by the Spirit.
So, if we want to speak in tongues loudly,
we need to find a place to do that without
disturbing anyone.
It can be somewhere in the forest.

In a closed room.
In a prayer closet.
But if we are in public, we need to be
wise.
We can still pray in tongues, but we can
do it quietly.
You may be married, and your spouse is
sleeping nicely next to you.
It may be at night or in the early hours
in the morning, and the Lord wakes you
up, and you have the urge to pray with
tongues.
You can still do so.
But then you need to do it quietly so that
you don’t disturb your spouse who is
sleeping.
You can pray in tongues in public places.
For example, when you are walking on
the street or sitting on a bus or train.
But again, you need to be concerned about
the people around you.
This is common sense.

The word ‘testimony’ means to do it again.
Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire.
This is His hallmark.
By this, we know that we have to do it with
the real Jesus.
Anything other than that is counterfeit.
John, the Baptist, said,
“I indeed baptize you with water unto
repentance, but He who is coming after
me is mightier than I ... He will baptize
you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
(Matthew 3:11)
This is what we see happening in the book of
Acts.
And this is what Jesus is still doing today.
I have seen it so often, and I’d like to share

Have you already received the wonderful
gift of the Holy Spirit since you became a
believer in Jesus Christ?
If not yet, find out how you can easily receive
Holy Spirit today—even if you have already tried
to receive many times before.
There can be only one of two reasons why
you haven’t received the Holy Spirit yet.
1) You may not yet clearly understand that there
is a Holy Spirit and why we can receive Him. You
may be in the same position as some disciples
from Ephesus in Acts 19. When Paul met them,
he asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit
when you believed?” They said to him, “We
haven’t heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
2) Or, you may be in the same position as some
believers from Samaria in Acts 8. They had
“believed” and “they were baptized.” But they
still hadn’t received the Holy Spirit at that point.
So then Peter and John came and “prayed for
them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit.”
Whichever position you are in—your time
to receive Holy Spirit has come!

From a strictly biblical perspective, the
answer is straightforward.
‘Yes and No.’
Everybody who has received the Holy Spirit
speaks in tongues as a sign.
But not everybody also operates in the gift
of tongues.
In other words, in the bible, we find two
types of speaking in tongues.
The accompanying sign of speaking in
tongues, according to Jesus in Mark 16:17:
“And these signs shall follow those
who believe ... in my name ... they will
speak with new tongues ...”
And the gift of tongues, according to Paul
in 1 Corinthians 12:10-11:
“To one is given ... to another different
kinds of tongues .. one and the
same Spirit works all these things,
distributing to each one individually as
He wills.”

Speaking in tongues is a powerful
transformation tool.
Paul had the greatest revelation of all the apostles
on the benefits of speaking in tongues. So he could
say to the Corinthians, “I thank my God, I speak
in tongues more than you all ...” (1 Corinthians
14:18)
But why is speaking in tongues so
powerful?
- First, when we speak in tongues, we speak to
God. So speaking in tongues is prayer. But not just
ordinary prayer. When we speak in tongues, the
Holy Spirit helps us pray perfect prayers that fit
our current spiritual state and circumstances.
- Praying in tongues also helps us to become more
attuned to the realm of the Holy Spirit and is a key
to revelation knowledge.
- Praying in tongues also helps us build ourselves
up in God’s faith—holy faith.
