Oxbridge Achievement
17-year-old Ben Ledwith from Worsley Mesnes
is celebrating after confirmation that he is one
of 31 Winstanley College students to get an
offer for a place at Oxbridge in September. Ben
holds an offer to read Law at Oxford University
and hopes to become a barrister in the future.
What makes the former Dean Trust pupil’s
achievement even more impressive is that
he applied for Oxford as an aspirational target since his
GCSEs, although good, did not match the usual profile
required. Ben also has dyslexia and receives support from
the college’s supported learning team.
Ben said: “With my GCSEs and background I thought I had
no chance of getting an interview never mind
an offer! The support I received from college
definitely helped to make this achievement
possible. Because of my dyslexia, college
confirmed my extra time in exams which really
helps me to put down everything I need to in
order to get top marks”.
Ben’s Personal Tutor at Winstanley, Kerry
Hetherington, commented: “I am so happy for Ben he is
just brilliant and really hard working. This achievement
is very much deserved and he is an inspiration to others
proving if you aim high and work hard, anything is
possible, no matter what your background is”.
