A history of
Ashurst’s
Beacon
The tower at Ashurst’s Beacon was built in 1798 by Sir
William Ashurst to act as a watch tower in preparation for
the Napoleonic War. However, there was a previous tower
at the site, which was used as part of a relay of beacons
stretching from Liverpool to Lancaster during the Anglo-
Spanish war of 1585.
The land surrounding Ashurst Beacon was acquired in
the 1920’s by Thomas Meadows, the Editor of the Wigan
Observer, who apparently twice restored the tower at
his own expense. In 1962, his widow Florence Meadows
donated the 17 acres of land to Wigan Corporation on
condition that ‘this land should forever remain a beauty
spot for the enjoyment of the people of Wigan’.
