Quincy TeenVoices2020 was a year in which hardshipand injustice were thrown into sharprelief, where personal struggle seemeduniversal and social divides impossibleto bridge. In many ways, it was anextraordinary year, but in others, thecritical issues of our day had lingeredbeneath the surface for as long as thecountry has existed.Quincy Community Theatre receivedan important grant to participate in,“Healing Illinois,” a state-sponsoredinitiative to support racial healingprojects across Illinois. Quincy was theonly community theatre to be honoredwith this grant.In partnership with Teen REACH andled by director of education BrendanShea, QCT brought together a diverseensemble of nine brilliant and creativeteenagers from all over Quincy with thegoal of creating a short theatre pieceinspired by issues of social justice thathave permeated the headlines this pastyear.The teens began their journey bydistilling their thoughts and feelingsabout the current social climate intoa single question: “How do we makesomeone see their own self-worth?”From there, they explored this questionusing storytelling exercises, discussioncircles, writing prompts and improvgames. The group developed a shorttheatre piece that combined thepersonal with the political, as well asintrospection with an urgent call toaction. The ensemble’s work highlightedhow closely the divisions and conflictsin today’s society are reflected in theinternal struggles that many teens facein their communities.QCT is proud to present the workin-progresson its YouTube channel.Typically, the organization never, “raisesthe curtain,” on a performance untilit’s polished to a shine and ready foran audience. But Quincy Teen Voiceshighlights the process of theatre-makingas the product itself. The act of theatremakingcan promote healing, can leadto revelation, and can spark discussionsthat do not end when the curtain falls,but continue to evolve and grow.Theatre can take many forms and servemany purposes. Whether that purpose isto lift one’s spirits through a memorableperformance, to see the world in a newlight or to engage citizens to participatein social change, the life-changingpotential of this beautiful art form isundeniable. Therefore, it is only fitting toconclude with a call to action from thegreat Brazilian theatre maker AugustoBoal, whose “Theatre of the Oppressed,”provided a blueprint for impactful activisttheatre:“Theatre is a form of knowledge; itshould and can also be a means oftransforming society.
