LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORDear Art Patrons:The return ofthe Arts. Ahh,how long I’vebeen waitingto splash thatheadline acrossthe front ofour flagshipArts Quincymagazine.It’s been ayear, hasn’t it? But with Adams Countyvaccination rates topping 30% as I’mwriting this, and with COVID transmissionat its lowest point since last summer, youcan see arts and culture programmingpopping up like sunny little daffodils inspringtime.Of course, the return of the arts won’thappen all at once, nor is the returnassured. I join with other communityleaders in emphasizing the need forcontinued diligence and masking, and Ihope as soon as you’re able, you takeadvantage of our mass vaccinationsite at the Oakley Lindsay Center toprotect yourself and those around you.All of these steps will help arts andculture reopen safely for our audiences,participants and volunteers.The first live event on our springtimecalendar is a marvelous play by QuincyCommunity Theatre featuring theextraordinary actress Jeri Conboyportraying iconic poet Emily Dickinson.Audience size will be limited, butaudience spirit, I suspect, will be at anall-time high.Live music is also poised for a return.The Quincy Symphony Orchestra andChorus have been recording wonderfulvirtual performances that are availableto stream, but they also expect a returnto historic Morrison Theater at QuincyJunior High School soon.I’m thrilled to see the Quincy ParkBand making its live music return fora 73rd season. I play trumpet in thisorganization, and I think I speak for all ofour local musicians when I say we areoverjoyed to make music in an ensemblefor a live audience again.The Historical Society of Quincy andAdams County has also been hardat work to prepare both the HistoryMuseum and the John Wood Mansionfor reopening to the public. The LincolnEra Log Cabin Village and Dr. EellsUnderground Railroad home are availablefor tours. The library has resumed fullservices. The Art Center has classeson its schedule. Q-Fest and Blues inthe District is slated to go forward. Weexpect fall favorites like the Folk LifeFestival and Art Fest to be back on thecalendar.I want to leave this letter to you with anexcerpt from a letter written by EmilyDickinson in March of 1884. Dickinsonwas no stranger to hurt, and this letter toher friends Louise and Frances Norcrossaddresses the pain of the loss of a friendbut the awe and hope that comes with anew spring. So it goes with the arts as itreemerges from this pandemic.Thank you, dears, for the sympathy.I hardly dare to know that I have lostanother friend, but anguish finds it out.Each that we lose takes part of us;A crescent still abides,Which like the moon, some turbid night,Is summoned by the tides.. . . I work to drive the awe away, yet aweimpels the work.I almost picked the crocuses, you toldthem so sincerely.
