Go toartsquincy.org for more Full STEAM Ahead activities!LAYERS OF THE EARTHCUPCAKESIngredients & Supplies• 1 box white or French vanilla cake mix• 1 package sugar cookie dough mix• 25 Oreos or chocolate sandwich cookies• 12 Tbsp butter• 4 large eggs• ½ cup vegetable oil• 1 cup water• 1 tub of whipped milk chocolate frosting• Red & yellow food coloring• Blue & green gel food coloring• 24 white cupcake wrappersInstructions:1. Preheat oven to 350°. Linetwo cupcake pans with the whitewrappers/liners and set aside.2. In a large bowl, prepare thesugar cookie dough according topackage instructions. It includesthe package contents, 1 egg, and½ cup (8 Tbsp.) of butter). Onceit is mixed completely, divide thedough between two bowl anduse the colored gel to dye oneportion of dough blue and oneportion of dough green. Placethe bowls of dough in the fridgeto cool and stiffen so that it is lesssticky to form into cookies.3. While the cookie dough iscooling … In a large bowl, mixtogether the cake mix, 3 eggs,1 cup water, and ½ cup oil untilsmooth. Divide the batter intotwo bowls. Add a few drops ofyellow food coloring to one bowland red food coloring to the otherbowl. Mix each bowl until thecolor is fully combined.4. Cush or grind the Oreos. Pourthem into a bowl and add 4Tbsp. melted butter. Stir togetheruntil well mixed. Take about ateaspoon of Oreo mixture andpress into the bottom of eachcupcake wrapper (just enough fora layer covering the entire bottomof the cupcake). If you havesome of the mixture left over aftermaking a crust in all 24 cupcakes,you can add a little more to eachone.5. Add a spoonful of red batterto each cupcake. Then add aspoonful of yellow batter to eachcupcake. Each cupcake shouldnow have three layers; the crust,a red layer, and a yellow layer.Bake for18 to 20minutesor until atoothpickinserted inthe middlecomes outclean. Remove from oven andallow to cool completely.6. While the cupcakes arebaking … Remove the chilledcookie dough from the fridge. Toshape the cookie, grab a smallamount of blue dough and asmall amount of green doughand roll both into one ball so youend up with a swirled pattern.The total ball will be about atablespoon of dough. (I usuallymake all 24 dough balls beforeI bake any so I can make surethey all end up being a similarsize.) Place on a baking sheetlined with parchment paper andbake for 12-14 minutes. Removefrom oven and allow to coolcompletely.7. Once cupcakes and cookiesare completely cool, frost eachcupcake with the whippedchocolate frosting and top eachone with a cookie.8. Enjoy!
