QA & REGULATORYDilly dallying in notifying METHYLCOBALAMINlays bare red tapism in key apexinstitutions like FSSAI and ICMROur Fight ContinuesOmission of key micro-nutrients like methylcobalaminin Food Safety and StandardsAuthority of India (FSSAI) healthsupplement regulations 2016 as well as theongoing methylcobalamin ban have notonly led to a chaotic scene in the industrybut also laid bare red-tapism of key institutionslike the Food Safety and StandardsAuthority of India (FSSAI) and the IndianCouncil of Medical Research (ICMR), somuch so that the pharma experts have outrightlydefied the ban and asked for clarityfrom the Union Health Ministry, UnionMinistry of Chemicals and Fertilizers &Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).Both FSSAI and ICMR have been adamantin their approach wherein FSSAI has notresponded responsibly as yet on the keyissue of revoking the ban on methylcobalamin.However, under the current premise andhaving bore the brunt of the insensible behaviorof the authorities, a recent representationhas been made to Union Ministry ofChemicals and Fertilizer. The consultantshave once again recommended DCGI to begiven the sole authority for implementationof nutraceutical policies and regulations,citing FSSAI as a toothless body. Ten yearsago, nutraceutical was under DCGI itself.Nutraceutical and drug consultants havealleged that FSSAI has been turning a blindeye to the contentious issues raised withreference to RDA values of Vitamin C andother micronutrients like methylcobalamin,which are vital for boosting immunity, mentalhealth and other co-morbid chronic ailmentsin the crucial juncture of COVID-19pandemic.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recommended1000 mg of Vitamin C for prophylacticuse against COVID-19 whereas itsRDA is suggested as only 40 mg due to poorinterventions by apex and responsible authoritieslike ICMR, FSSAI and DCGI.Dr Sanjay AgrawalDr Agrawal has actively worked in pharmaceuticaland related industries for morethan 35 years and started this firm PharmaceuticalConsultants and Inventor in2005.
