u3a Day
Have you recently retired and have surplus time on your
hands? If so, then Wednesday 2nd June could be the first
day of the rest of your life. It is National u3a Day!
Founded in 1982, the u3a is a movement of 1,057 groups
that provide a wide range of opportunities so that its
450,000 members can explore new ideas, skills and
activities together. The organisation is open to everyone
who’s no longer in full-time work.
Up Holland & District u3a will be hosting an information
display stand by the Co-op store in Ormskirk Road,
Upholland from 10am to 4.30pm. Visitors to the stand can
also pick up details of a heritage trail around the area.
Members and their friends are also invited to attend a
virtual Variety Show in the morning and a virtual Quiz in
the evening. For more information about joining the u3a,
No Mow May
Wigan Borough residents are being encouraged to leave
the mower in the shed throughout May as part of a
scheme to help the environment.
Wigan Council has been preparing over the winter for
the ‘No Mow May’ initiative on various greenspaces
throughout the borough to attract wildlife and rare
species of wildflowers.
Paul Barton, Wigan Council’s director for environment,
said, “While the pandemic has challenged many of us like
never before, one positive has been shining a light on
how a reduced mowing regime can improve biodiversity
immeasurably and encourage new wildlife into the
borough.
“I’d encourage residents to take up the challenge. Not
only could it result in enough nectar for ten times more
bees and other pollinators, but you’ll be able to put your
feet up in the spring sunshine and be more likely to spot
a greater variety of flowers popping up in your garden.”
For more information about how you can get involved in
the scheme please go online at www.plantlife.org.uk
