u3a Day<br />

Have you recently retired and have surplus time on your<br />

hands? If so, then Wednesday 2nd June could be the first<br />

day of the rest of your life. It is National u3a Day!<br />

Founded in 1982, the u3a is a movement of 1,057 groups<br />

that provide a wide range of opportunities so that its<br />

450,000 members can explore new ideas, skills and<br />

activities together. The organisation is open to everyone<br />

who’s no longer in full-time work.<br />

Up Holland & District u3a will be hosting an information<br />

display stand by the Co-op store in Ormskirk Road,<br />

Upholland from 10am to 4.30pm. Visitors to the stand can<br />

also pick up details of a heritage trail around the area.<br />

Members and their friends are also invited to attend a<br />

virtual Variety Show in the morning and a virtual Quiz in<br />

No Mow <strong>May</strong><br />

<strong>Wigan</strong> Borough residents are being encouraged to leave<br />

the mower in the shed throughout <strong>May</strong> as part of a<br />

scheme to help the environment.<br />

<strong>Wigan</strong> Council has been preparing over the winter for<br />

the ‘No Mow <strong>May</strong>’ initiative on various greenspaces<br />

throughout the borough to attract wildlife and rare<br />

species of wildflowers.<br />

Paul Barton, <strong>Wigan</strong> Council’s director for environment,<br />

said, “While the pandemic has challenged many of us like<br />

never before, one positive has been shining a light on<br />

how a reduced mowing regime can improve biodiversity<br />

immeasurably and encourage new wildlife into the<br />

borough.<br />

“I’d encourage residents to take up the challenge. Not<br />

only could it result in enough nectar for ten times more<br />

bees and other pollinators, but you’ll be able to put your<br />

feet up in the spring sunshine and be more likely to spot<br />

a greater variety of flowers popping up in your garden.”<br />
