Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
We love our cover model – Presley! So much so that we could not resist
featuring him in front of our new Lesly S. Smith Pet Adoption Center.
Presley – representing every lost or abandoned animal that needs the help
of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League – is the reason our community so
generously rallied around our effort to build a new state-of-the-art facility to
save more lives.
There is never a time limit on how long a dog or cat can stay with us but, on
average, a dog or cat that comes to Peggy Adams is adopted in just two weeks’
time. Some find their new loving home in as little as 24 hours. But for some –
like Presley – it can take longer. And for those animals in particular, building
the new adoption center was critical to making sure we can give our temporary
residents the best shelter environment possible.
When I visited Presley the first day he was in the new center, it was clear it
meant a world of difference to him – he absolutely loves his new room (and
his own private outdoor patio)! I hope you will get to know Presley better on
Page 24 – and I hope you will tell others about this great, big, goofy dog who’s
been waiting too long for the loving home he deserves.
We all know too well how difficult this past year has been but thanks to you
our doors remained fully open for animals that needed our help. More than
5,600 found their new forever homes. More than 10,600 animals were spayed
or neutered (more than 6,000 at no cost). In total, more than 28,500 animals
benefited from Peggy Adams programs that you make possible.
Friends like you – even during this pandemic – remembered the animals. The
lost, the abandoned, the sick and the injured. I fear to think of what would have
happened to so many animals if it weren’t for your continued, caring support.
During the darkest of times, you came through for those most in need.

FROM SNOW TO SAND Texas Shelter Dogs Find a New Beginning in Florida
According to Austin Pets Alive!, without this transport,
there certainly would have been an increase in
euthanasia due to lack of space in several of these
shelters. Even though the rescue groups in Texas were
working around-the-clock to make sure the animals
were provided the best care, many of the Texas shelters
are open air and did not have the infrastructure to
deal with the winter storm and freezing temperatures.
Many shelters suffered power outages, and some are
still without water.
While at Peggy Adams, all the rescue dogs were placed
under a 14-day quarantine, evaluated, and received
any follow-up medical care prior to being placed up
for adoption. A special thank you to everyone who
made sure these pups felt safe, comfortable and loved.
Winter Storm Uri – which lasted from February 13 th
to February 17 th – contributed to 70 deaths in the
United States, caused massive blackouts, and led to an
ongoing Texas power crisis. Continuing into March,
Texas was still feeling serious after effects of winter
storms that slammed into the south. That is why
Peggy Adams had to step in to help!
On March 3 rd , Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
led the effort to rescue 70 dogs from 8 shelters in the
Austin area. Peggy Adams coordinated this transfer
flight with Wings of Rescue and Austin Pets Alive! – the
two organizations that have taken the lead in Texas
in managing the rescue of 1,000 most at-risk animals.
The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River
County received 17 of the 70 dogs while the rest went
to Peggy Adams.

KIDS' CORNER
It is always a great time to instill philanthropy in
children. Philanthropy is not only for adults or the
wealthy. Anyone trying to better the society is a
philanthropist!
Special thanks to Madison who collected toys,
blankets, food and monetary donations as part of
a community service project for her school. These
donations not only help our shelter animals, but also
Peggy's Pantry which assists struggling families in
feeding their pets and keeping them in a loving home
and out of an animal shelter.

2020 VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION AWARDS
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is extremely
grateful to the army of volunteers that continued to
show up and support our teams when we needed
them most, despite the challenges that came along
with 2020!
Last year, 512 active volunteers contributed nearly
30,000 hours of service, helping in a multitude of
different ways, including general animal care, medical
services, foster support, admissions, adoptions and so
much more! The level of commitment our volunteers
have to helping our animals and supporting our staff
is nothing short of amazing, and that was certainly
showcased in 2020!
“Volunteers are truly the heartbeat of Peggy Adams,”
says Tara Murray, the League’s Volunteer Program
Manager. “Last year was a tough year for everyone
but to see our amazing volunteers so eager to come
to campus and help wherever needed, truly left me
speechless. Peggy Adams simply could not operate
at the level it does without these passionate, selfless
individuals devoting their free time to supporting
our mission, and we as an organization are beyond
thankful for each of them!”
Due to the continued COVID-19 concerns,
Peggy Adams made the decision to forego hosting
its Annual Volunteer Awards & Recognition Event;
however, it was still important to reward and honor a
few of our outstanding volunteers, who undoubtedly
made an impact in 2020. Many of these award
winners have volunteered for several years and
without them, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
simply would not be the same!

HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAM
Compassion, Art and Generosity Combined
The kindergarten team at the Benjamin School reached out to
Peggy Adams looking for a new community service project for its
four classrooms. They were excited to host a supply drive and engage
in an art project to help promote pet adoption.
First, a special Amazon Wish List
was created for the Benjamin
School in which they had donations
shipped directly to
Peggy Adams via Amazon Smile.
An incredible number of donations were collected, and they keep coming in!
Second, the art project! The class was supplied with photos and information
of various adoptable animals from which the kids created artwork. This
artwork was posted on Peggy Adams’ Facebook page. The original artwork was
displayed on the kennels and accompanied the animals to their forever homes.

Look who got “Into the A.C.T.”
The Education Department extended the following opportunity and invitation to the general public and
supporters of Peggy Adams: Looking for a shared activity for you and your furry friend? Then get into the A.C.T.
and join the Ambassador Canine Team at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue. This is a volunteer role where you and your
personal dog will be trained to interact with our guests as part of our education programs.
Throughout the training, each team worked on basic commands, meeting and greeting people in different
scenarios, and we even the recipients of a kid parade. With tails high, they all did great. Now that they have
graduated, they will have the opportunity to get to work!!!

20th Annual Barry Crown Walk for the Animals Went Virtual!
Over $116,000 was Raised to Help Save Abandoned & Injured Animals in Need
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s 20 th Annual
Barry Crown Walk for the Animals went virtual this
year and hosted a special celebration on social media
on February 20 th . Although the Walk was virtual,
participants still fundraised and celebrated their furry
best friends and raised over $116,000 to help animals
in need at Peggy Adams.
Peggy Adams’ supporters throughout the community
signed up and arranged a walk, either solo or with
their pets or some friends (safely and socially
distanced of course) at a place and time that was
convenient for them. Peggy Adams staff and
volunteers participated in a Mini-Walk with a few
adoptable pets that was filmed and aired on the
Peggy Adams Facebook page so we could walk
“virtually” with our supporters.
“For the first time in the history of our 20-year Walk
we went virtual,” said Rich Anderson, Executive
Director/CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League. “We wish that we could have celebrated
this milestone event in person – however, thanks to
our sponsors and supporters, we raised a significant
amount that will help us save abandoned and injured
animals in need.” Anderson added, “As a nonprofit
that receives no city, state or federal government
funding, Peggy Adams relies on community support
to help us provide services to more than 30,000
dogs, cats, puppies and kittens every year and we are
extremely grateful to all of those who participated in
this event.”

On March 29, 2021, Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League held a private Ribbon Cutting
ceremony to celebrate its much anticipated
Lesly S. Smith Pet Adoption Center. Due to
COVID-19 safety restrictions, only a limited
number of new building donors, as well as
Peggy Adams’ Board of Directors, attended
the event.
The new 28,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art
Pet Adoption Center will enable Peggy Adams
to save thousands more dogs, cats, puppies and
kittens. The Center was designed for the best
environment for the animals and a welcoming
experience for the public. The Center features
a Cat Adoption Wing and three Dog Adoption
Wings. The Cat Adoption Wing includes four
large group cat apartments with catios, allowing
the animals to access freely an outdoor area
facing butterfly gardens. A central cat tower
with condos for cats who prefer to be housed
individually fills the center of the Cat Adoption
Wing, with Cat Colony Rooms for small groups
of related kitties completing the range of
living spaces.

for groups of compatible animals as well as
individual dog kennels, all with outdoor patios
readily accessible to the animals housed there.

New Pet Adoption Center Continued
At the end of each wing, there is an outdoor dog
play yard where daily play groups will be held,
covered to protect from strong sun and rain, and
with fans to circulate and cool the air.

The Moran Cat Hall
The Pet Adoption Center also includes a
veterinarian office, volunteer office, a large
volunteer workroom/conference room, a
volunteer lounge, and a general conference room,
as well as a grooming room and photography
studio. The Center also features Humane
Education classrooms which will enable
Peggy Adams to extend the important message of
dog and cat advocacy and care through the new
educational programs just launched this year.
There is also a Cat Café inside the new Pet
Adoption Center! Visitors will be able to enjoy
a cup of coffee or tea (donations appreciated)
while playing with the cats and kittens visiting
the café each day. Stay tuned for the Cat Café’s
official opening.
Peggy Adams has also created a welcoming
environment on the outside too. Commemorative
bricks will be laid in the entryway to the new
center as well as in the outdoor terraces, while
trees and benches honoring special pets and
family members will be featured throughout the
grounds and the visitor areas.

More words of thanks for giving back to the animals…
Lost Tree Rescue formed 9 years ago to implement a
Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return program to stabilize their
Village’s feral cat population… and successful they were.
They attended trapping classes at Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League and they followed best practices as they began
their work. Over that time, their cat population reduced and
stabilized – humanely. And at the end of 2020, Lost Tree
Rescue decided they could disband. On December 1, 2020,
Lost Tree Rescue presented Peggy Adams with a check for
$2,329 – funds for TNVR that had been collected over the
years and now are no longer needed at the Village.

WELCOME TO PEGGY ADAMS
Director of Shelter Medical Services
Dr. Alyssa Comroe, DVM, MPH
In January, Peggy Adams welcomed Dr. Alyssa
Comroe as our new Director of Medical Services.
Dr. Comroe was raised in New Jersey and graduated
from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of
Science in Biology and English Literature. In 2010,
she began her career in animal welfare working at
Miami-Dade Animal Services in Miami, Florida as
a veterinary technician while pursuing her Master
of Public Health degree. She then attended the
University of Florida where she obtained her Doctor
of Veterinary Medicine degree and completed
her Master of Public Health degree. While at the
University of Florida, she also earned the Maddie’s
Certificate in Shelter Medicine which is a formal
training program that allowed Dr. Comroe to learn
specialized knowledge and skills to be a shelter
veterinarian.
After graduation, Dr. Comroe began working as
a shelter veterinarian at Jacksonville Animal Care
and Protective Services in Jacksonville, Florida.
While there she was able to implement lifesaving
programs to increase the standard of care for the
pets of Jacksonville and to increase the shelter’s
lifesaving capacity. She then took a position at Kansas
State University College of Veterinary Medicine in
Manhattan, Kansas as faculty member in shelter
medicine where she had the opportunity to teach
veterinary students shelter medicine and prepare them
to be the next generation of shelter veterinarians.
While there, she also consulted with various shelters
in the Midwest, spoke at conferences and performed
research. Most recently, Dr. Comroe was a shelter
veterinarian at Hillsborough County Pet Resource
Center where she helped grow the pet retention
program and improved the standard of care in the
medical department.
Having previously lived in South Florida, when Dr.
Comroe saw the Director of Shelter Medical Services
position open, she was intrigued and wanted to hear
more. Upon learning about Peggy Adams, she knew
that this organization was exactly the type of
environment in which she would like to work.
“I always knew I wanted to be a veterinarian but when
I found shelter medicine, I realized that I had found
my niche. Not only do I have the opportunity to
practice medicine and perform surgery, but I am able
to save lives on a larger scale. I cannot imagine doing
anything else and am so excited to get to return to the
animal sheltering community in South Florida. I’m
thrilled to be a part of saving the pets in Palm Beach
County and to give pets the best quality of life possible
while they are in our care.”
Dr. Comroe currently resides in West Palm Beach
with her partner, Jose, and their Green Cheek Conure,
Mordecai. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, hiking
and spending time at the beach.

Mr. Monk and Peace of Mind
Mr. Monk came to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League when his beloved owner passed away. More
than 4 years ago, before she ever became ill, his owner
decided to enroll her pet in Peggy Adams' Peace of
Mind program, designed to ensure that no pet falls
through the cracks should their owner no longer be
able to care for them.
Peace of Mind takes effect immediately — there is no
wait while probate processes before the animal can
be cared for and find a new loving home. For a gift or
bequest of $25,000, up to three dogs or cats can come
to Peggy Adams, go into a foster home rather than a
kennel (much less stressful for the pets), receive basic
wellness medical care from our veterinary team for
the rest of their life, and have annual check ins by our
staff with the adoptive family to be sure all is well.
Mr. Monk had gone to a boarding facility in
December when his “mom” was hospitalized. Upon
her death in January, the estate’s representative alerted
us and he came our way. He enjoyed walks and
playtime with our staff and volunteers and two days
later was in his new loving home with an experienced
owner who had long been looking for a dog just
like him.
His new “mom” writes, “Mr. Monk is
doing great and living his best life in his
new home. It was love at first sight
and we are so happy to have found
him! Peggy Adams was wonderful
in all aspects of stewarding his
adoption and settling him into
his new home. He arrived with
several of his previous comfort
toys and bed as well as a leash,
crate, all his shots and two bags of
food to start him off. Peggy Adams
was very helpful in providing all the
arrangements and information regarding
his history and guidance for continued support
and coordination with Peggy Adams.

PETS FOR HEROES ADOPTION PROGRAM
Pets for Heroes is a program which honors those
who are currently serving or have served in the United
States military and provides an opportunity for these
heroes to adopt any dog or cat at Peggy Adams at no
cost. All adoption fees are waived, and they receive
complimentary benefits, including a training crate or
carrier, bed, litter box, scratching post, collar/harness,
leash, enrichment toy, water and food bowls, Hill’s
Pet Nutrition starter bag of food, 30-days of free pet
insurance and an ID tag. Our nation’s heroes will
also receive, for their newly adopted pet, free yearly
veterinarian exams at Peggy Adams, free training
classes, and access to Peggy Adams’ Behavior Helpline
for the life of their pet. They also will receive a 20%
lifetime discount on heartworm testing, heartworm/
flea/tick preventatives, wellness services and a 20%
lifetime discount in the Shaggy Shop boutique located
at Peggy Adams.
*A $20 rabies tag fee does apply to Palm Beach County
residents. Military personnel currently active, retired, or
inactive must present a form of military identification.

MOTHER KNOWS BEST
Don’t Kit-Nap
this Kitten Season
When people find kittens outdoors without their
mother, their first instinct may be to bring them inside
or rush them to an animal shelter. But Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League suggests that may be hurting
them more than helping them. Research shows, when
kittens are separated from their mother, their chances
of survival drop significantly.
When you find a litter of kittens, here’s what
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League advises
you should do:
1. Do not interfere with the kittens as it may cause
stress to the mother. If you really want to help,
you can provide some food and water for the
mother, placed a good distance from the nest.
2. Observe the kittens from a distance. The mother
may be out looking for food, but she will most
likely return.
3. If the kittens are in immediate danger, like under
a car or in a flooded area, find a safe place nearby
to move them, but make sure they’re still close
enough for their mother to find them.
4. If you have observed the kittens for 24 hours and
are sure that the mother isn’t returning, you may
pick them up and care for them.
5. If the mother comes back and is friendly, wait
until the kittens are 5-6 weeks old before bringing
them and their mom to a veterinarian or to
Peggy Adams to be spayed or neutered.
Now what happens if newborn kittens are brought
into the shelter without their mother? Almost all
animal shelters will humanely euthanize orphaned
kittens less than four weeks old, as most do not have
the resources to feed the kittens around-the-clock and
mortality rate of these vulnerable kittens is very high.
Though Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League opened
its Neonatal Kitten Nursery in 2016 as a revolutionary
approach to saving the lives of newborn kittens that
require 24-hour care to survive, it truly should be a
last resort. The nursery is the only one of its kind in
South Florida and, though it saved nearly 600 kittens
in 2020, its daily capacity is only 80 kittens.
What happens when the nursery is full? When this
occurs, Peggy Adams’ only other option is to try to
quickly find a foster home. Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League is always looking to train people on
how to be a newborn kitten foster volunteer.
Peggy Adams provides all the supplies, and the
foster volunteer provides the love and daily care.
Once the foster kitten is old enough to transition
to solid food and to be spayed or neutered, foster
volunteers can bring the kitten back to the shelter
so it can be placed up for adoption and find its
forever home.

Providing Emergency Care
JR
In January, Palm Beach County Animal Care &
Control contacted Peggy Adams about a very special
German Shepherd – JR – who was recently confiscated
from a local residence. He was severely injured and
missing the lower half of one of his legs, which was
tied with a wire.
After JR was brought to Peggy Adams, our doctors
quickly realized his leg would need to be amputated,
and discovered he also had heartworm disease.
Thanks to Peggy Adams’ Olivia’s Fund, we were able
to provide JR the leg surgery that he needed at a local
specialty hospital. Our goal is to be able to provide
this necessary care at our shelter by our veterinary
team soon. JR also received heartworm treatments at
Peggy Adams until he was given a clean bill of health.
Thanks to those who support Olivia’s Fund, animals
with special medical issues – such as JR – get the
comprehensive care they need to live their best life.
On March 9 th , JR was adopted into a loving, forever
home which has all of the belly rubs and hugs a happy,
healthy dog could ask for.

About Olivia’s Fund: Olivia came to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League after being rescued from an animal hoarder. She had
significant hip dysplasia and muscle atrophy from abuse and neglect. Olivia had also been shot with a BB gun and needed surgery
to help repair her legs. In honor of Olivia, we set up a special fund to help give a second chance to dogs and cats with medical and
behavioral issues that can be fixed with surgery, special medical treatment, or training. We decided to call it “Olivia’s Fund.”

FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS
In Loving Memory of Linda Bartlett Miller
Board Member since February 2013
We at Peggy Adams are so grateful for the life of
Linda Miller, beloved Board member, friend of the
animals and tireless volunteer.
Linda Pulitzer Bartlett was born in Baltimore on
September 5, 1950 to the late David Bartlett and the
late Gladys Pulitzer Preston. Her mother moved to
Palm Beach and Linda attended Palm Beach Day
Academy before moving to Mt. Kisco, NY when her
mother married Lewis T. Preston, later chairman of
J. P. Morgan and the chairman of the World Bank.
In 1973, Linda came to Palm Beach to visit her aunt
Lily Pulitzer Rousseau and took a job as a waitress
with her cousins Liza and Minnie Pulitzer at Leverett
Miller's Peter Dinkel's Restaurant, which had just
opened on Royal Poinciana Way. There began Linda's
romance with Lev Miller that lasted for 48 years.
Linda had many passions in her life. She was a
world-class skier, loved to play tennis, travel and
enjoyed living on a farm. She had a great love for her
family, dogs and horses. She even headed up the first
Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation horse rescue at
a Florida prison.
A great passion for her in Palm Beach was Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League, where Linda sat on the Board
of Directors since 2013. She also served as co-chair of
Peggy Adams’ annual Publicity Hound Magazine.
Linda had such a kind heart, and it was very
important to her show appreciation to those who
support Peggy Adams. Linda spearheaded an annual
recognition program that focuses on acknowledging
and thanking long-time donors to the organization.
Sadly, Linda passed away on March 7, 2021 after a
brief but valiant battle against aggressive Stage Four
cancer. She spent her final weeks surrounded by
her husband Leverett S. Miller, her daughters and
stepdaughter, her grandson, and her beloved dogs.
Her kindness and generosity of spirit will be missed
by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
