EDITOR’S NOTE

DATA ANALYSIS –

THE MOST

HAPPENING CAREER

emember Star Trek, the popular television serial of the

R1960s when scientific fictions were a rage that went on

for decades? The serial was telecast number of times

after that. Perhaps, we got the first glimpse of data analysis in

this series. Data analysis has come a long way since then and is

the most sought-after skill today.

This century is known as the century of data analysts and data

scientists. According to Harvard Business Review, data scientist

is the sexiest job of the century. Yet, most people shy away at

the mention of data science/scientist, machine learning,

artificial intelligence. Fortunately, there are institutions that

come to the rescue of such people by providing short courses

for them besides professional courses for students interested

in making a career in it.

We are living in a world where data keeps flowing endlessly and

competition keeps increasing, so does the challenge to

converse with and analyse the data. One who can swim with

the flow of data can survive in this ever-evolving world of

business and the cut-throat competition it creates as a result.

Companies store huge volumes of data that are critical to their

businesses. Simply accumulating data will be of no use to a

company if not analysed. If companies do not stay in tune with

this trend due to lack of skilled persons, then they would

possibly trail behind their competitors.

Data analysts can help compiling and adding value to the data.

They bring structure to this mammoth data and help analyse

them. A data analyst must know the present scenario of data,

analyse it, gauge the future performance, and provide

solutions to enhance the system or solve issues, if any.

The huge amount of data pouring in continuously has

given rise to the dire necessity for data analysis. One

has to keeping oneself updated with it and plan their

business strategies for successful implementation of

projects and to compete effectively.

With data flowing in continuously the demand for

experts in analysing them have also gone up multi-fold.

The area of expertise is varied with demands in

industries, banking, e-commerce, research, fraud

detection and risk management, and even in some

government offices.

Realising this need of the time and scope, many

educational institutions are providing professional

courses in data analytics. One can acquire a graduate

degree, post-graduate degree, diplomas, certifications,

PhD or even crash courses. Short term courses are also

provided for professionals who want to upgrade their

knowledge.

To survive in this ever-evolving business world and

technological advancements, embracing Industry 4.0

has become vital. Balance is the keyword for survival

today – be it in the personal life or in the professional

one. Industry 4.0 also requires one to be balanced in

the physical and digital world of business and data

analytics is a crucial part of industry 4.0.

To be ahead or even stay afloat in this fast-changing

world of industry and technology and the competition

in the global market, analysing data and applying the

techniques to decision making process have become

imperative.

Thus, a career in data analytics is one of the lucrative

options today. This is one field that everyone needs to

be aware of and have the primary knowledge, if not an

expertise in it.

Acknowledging this need of the hour, we, at The

Knowledge Review, have featured some of the top

institutes that are doing a commendable work in

providing the necessary courses and skills in data

analytics in our latest edition - The 10 Leading Data

Analytics Course Providers, 2021.

Have an insightful read as you navigate through the

Multi-disciplinary with Holistic Approach

Christ University is a nurturing

ground for an individual's holistic

development to make an effective

contribution to society in a dynamic

environment

The city of Pune is widely regarded by its admirers

as being a safe, quiet city, fashioned around lush

green gardens, trees, and hills spreading as far as

the eye can see. The climate here is pleasant all year round

and the people are mostly amicable. In the outskirts of this

‘Oxford of the East’, lies the reputed Catholic college –

CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune, Lavasa

Campus, one of the prestigious multi-disciplinary

universities of India

.

CHRIST (Deemed to be University) was born out of the

educational vision of St Kuriakose Elias Chavara. He

founded the first Catholic indigenous congregation-

Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) in 1831, which

administers CHRIST. The CHRIST Institute of

Management (CIM) was established by the CHRIST

University Trust in Lavasa, which is the promoter of

CHRIST University, Bengaluru.

Humble Beginnings

The CIM campus was inaugurated at Lavasa on July 20,

2014 and it started with PGDM course with the mere

capacity of 12 students in one building. The institution was

granted “deemed to be university” status in 2019, by the

University Grants Commission (UGC).

The Analytical Hub now offers several UG (under

graduation), PG (post-graduation), and Doctoral-level

programmes in the field of commerce, law, data science,

The Analytical Force to be Reckoned With

Data analytics is a field that is growing exponentially due to

the influx in the quantity of data being collected every

single day. Companies are now required to be updated with

the data and strategize their business modules around them

for the successful execution of their plans. Data analytics

enables organizations to make effective business decisions

based on more informed data and research that will increase

their revenues and give them an edge over their

competitors. Hence there is a wide scope for students

Data Analytics Today and in Future

To push the technology and decision making to the next

generation one needs to adapt to the industry 4.0 which is

the amalgamation of the physical and the digital world.

Every industry, to advance in their respective fields, needs

to build next generation products/services. Further, to grow

in a world of increasing competition they need to optimize

and critically evaluate all the decision-making processes

and the decisions themselves. One of the essential parts of

industry 4.0 is data analytics. Data is considered to be one

of the most important assets of any firm today.

There are three types of Data Analytics

1. Descriptive Analytics (Knowing the existing state of the

system)

2. Predictive Analytics (Predicting the future performance

of the system)

3. Prescriptive Analytics (Prescribing the solution to

problems in the system)

In simple terms, Data Analytics is the process of

systematically applying statistical and/or logical techniques

to describe, condense, evaluate and draw inference from the

data. No industry is immune from the effects brought about

by this global health issue, however, recognizing that the

data and analytics space is responding well is promising for

the future. Optimization will be applied to everything from

production to logistics to human resource management, and

analytically mature organizations should see an increase in

demand for data science services. Even from learner’s

standpoint the career in data analytics is one of the most

rewarding and remunerative because of high demand and

short supply of skilled professionals.

Dynamic Leader

Aditya Shah, Founder of the academy, has an impressive

history of industry and training experience. He is the

driving force of the academy and leads by example.

An alumni of BITS-Pilani, he has more than six years of

industry and training experience and has trained more than

150 students. He is a General Electric certified Analytics

Engineer, trainer for Data Science and Machine Learning

with Python, visiting faculty at CEPT University,

Ahmedabad, Technology Consultant at SAVE Public

Limited and ex- General Electric, JFWTC Bengaluru.

He also has a number of publications to his credit, like - A

Career Guidance

A. Live training on the technology based on industry

standards

B. Interview Preparation

C. Project-based learning

D. Resume Preparation

E. Internship

F. Live Project

G. Placement Assistance

Being Different

In today’s time, there are a lot of platforms that are teaching

these technologies. Some of them have pre-recorded videos

at a $10 US Dollar rate with life-time access, there are so

called YouTube bloggers and other blogs who have courses

in these technologies. The limitations of these platforms are

that they are inaccurate, insufficient and offer no-industry

relevant content. Further, low or almost free courses lure

the students to buy them which finally adds no value to the

learner. In contrast to that, Glowworm offers live training

from industry professionals and their courses are designed

by these professionals on based on their professional

experience. The trainers are responsible for hiring for their

respective organizations. So, the academy can deliver the

latest and the greatest to its students in terms of the industry

relevant knowledge. Further, Glowworm’s courses are

focused on project-based learning so they do not teach just

theory but also make students work on the concepts that

they have learnt.

Post-training, Glowworm provides complementary access

to the students of all the live training sessions. It also

supports its learners for preparation of interviews and

resume preparation. With the academy’s connections with

the industry, it also supports students in terms of getting an

opportunity in the industry through its dedicated placement

assistance. Further, universities are launching full time

courses on the same, which last from 1-2 year based on the

program and are charging unaffordable prices from the

students. As opposed to that, Glowworm offers an

accelerated and affordable learning path to its learners

through live training.

Recently, they added a program focused on mental

development of kids using coding. In this program the focus

is that coding becomes a life skill and not just something

APRIL | 2021

Aditya Shah

you learn for academic purposes. For the coding of kids’

program, Glowworm focuses on developing children’s

logical, computational and analytical mindset. Learning

how to code at a young age can truly set up your child for a

lifetime of success. Even if they do not go into a

specifically computer science related field, it gives them an

edge in virtually every modern industry. It is wise to say

that learning a programming language is the basic literacy

in this digital age. The academy’s qualified faculty and

carefully designed course ensures that the child builds its

own code and there is crystal clear understanding of each

line of code.

Coping during the Pandemic

The academy’s online training platform has seen increased

interest during the pandemic. Being focused on live online

learning, the academy was able to establish relevance

during the pandemic. The affordable prices of the academy

have allowed it to support many students and professionals

in these testing times.

Future Plans

Glowworm plans –

- To collaborate with like-minded universities to design and

deliver customised courses on various emerging

technologies at an academic level. This will allow the

students to adapt to these technologies at an early stage for

a rewarding and remunerative career.

- They also are focusing on strengthening their ties with the

industry to provide more industry connect for students in

terms of live projects, internships and job opportunities.

Data Analyt

Disrupting the Digital Market Dynamically

18

APRIL | 2021

ics Astudy

conducted by SINTEF in

2014 showed that more of the

world’s data had been collected in

the past two years than the rest of the human

history combined. Data is essential,

ubiquitous, and profitable – except when it is

not. With such unimaginable amounts of

information produced every day by us

humans, the primary question remains –

How to use this information optimally?

Curation is a mix of art and science which

deals with selecting, organizing, and looking

after the sets of information. Knowledge is

power, they say. Then curation is the most

essential weapon of the digital age. Data

Analytics is nothing but curation in a digital

context.

In the business world, data analytics helps

marketers learn about their customers with

target precision, from which movies they

watch on streaming services to their

favourite scoop of chocolate ice cream.

Analytics and data have given us deeper

insights into the consumer, enabling quick

decision making and thereby optimizing the

marketing efforts. It grounds the information

coming from multiple sources, providing a

platform to view them in one place so that

one can see what is working for them and

what is not.

While Big Data is not a novel phenomenon,

it is only recently that we have begun to

grasp the possible power of data-driven

approaches to decision making in terms of

market penetration. Big Data allows one to

gather and analyze more sets of information,

offering marketers the ability to focus on

informed targeting for greater efficiency.

Algorithms analyze billions of fragments of

data to suit an advertiser’s needs. This

proves an invaluable asset to direct efforts,

resources and customer interactions for

maximizing market penetration and other

needs.

The year 2020 has been a year of disruptions

and risks – and for some, successful

management of those risks. The pandemic

and the disruptions caused by it have

completely transformed the way consumers

buy products and services. Much attention

has been diverted to the impressive ways

machine learning and AI help companies by

automating services, making

recommendations and predicting patterns

that lead to greater sales and engagement.

For example, Amazon’s recommendation

algorithm drives a third of its sales. Whereas

YouTube’s algorithm is responsible for 70%

of the content watched on its platform.

What Next?

New Rules

It is an exciting time in the world right now.

How the future will evolve in a world where

both marketers and consumers are

influenced and managed by intelligent, data

and analytics-based software applications, is

something the whole world is trying to

understand.

The marketing teams need a higher level of

digital literacy and a deeper understanding

of how to use data to answer important

questions, like: how to advertise? How to

handle customer relationships? How to look

into after-sales support?

For this, the organizational leaders need to

proactively think about ways and strategies

to enable themselves and their organizations

for an AI-powered and Data Analytics

supported future of marketing.

“The companies that are going to win are

the ones who are using data, not guessing.”

Customer Analytics and chief measurement

strategist at Google. T R

IMS Proschool

Bridging the Skills Gap

The game is set and the challenge is announced: As

robots, automation and artificial intelligence

perform more tasks and there is a massive

disruption of jobs, how will workers of a new generation

traverse the uncertain job market? Experts say a wide array

of education and skill-building programs need to be created

to meet new demands.

Fortunately, an emerging institute based in India has

stepped up to the challenge to make proficient and industryready

professionals out of aspirants. It is the IMS

Proschool!

IMS Proschool Pvt. Ltd. is an initiative of IMS Learning. At

IMS, the operational goal for the past 40 years has been

simple – Building a long-term successful career.

Proschool is an extension of the same mission.

At Proschool, students are provided practical skills and

knowledge at affordable cost in the shortest possible time.

The institute's endeavour is to get students into jobs that

give them useful experience for a successful and long-term

career.

India is a country of largely young population. Number of

students graduating every year is at an all-time high, but so

is the unemployment rate. The main reason for this is that

they lack basic skills that are required for the jobs.

IMS Proschool’s vision is to bridge these gaps using skills,

to help them achieve a better career, as this institute only

believes in one thing – ‘Shaping Careers, Building Lives’.

And that is exactly their motto.

Courses Offered

Today, analytics is perhaps one of the most important skills

that everyone should have irrespective of their job/career.

To meet everyone's demand, IMS Proschool offers three

courses in the field of analytics, which are Certifications in

Business Analytics, Certification in Data Science and PG

Diploma in Data Science.

Certification in Business analytics is a three-month course,

whereas Certificate in Data Science is a six-month course

perfect for working professionals. And PG Diploma in Data

Science is a 10-month course, perfect for freshers to start

their career in Analytics.

“Today, I see a lot of confusion in people, as to what

exactly Data Analytics or Data Science is,” commented the

Founder & CEO of IMS Proschool – Mr. Sanjay

Chaudhary. He adds: “I see many people scratching their

head when they hear words like data science, machine

learning and deep learning and all they know is the tag line

'Data Scientist: Sexiest Job of 2021' by Harvard Business

Review.”

However, Mr. Sanjay explains that the institutes, colleges

and schools are doing a great job by educating students

with analytics knowledge, in a simple manner. He assures

that his institution will soon be the leader in the field of

Analytics and Machine Learning and then, Deep

Learning will not just be a black box but a statistical and

mathematical equation.

The Veteran Leader

Mr. Sanjay Chaudhary is a mechanical engineer with an

MBA from IIM, Bangalore. He has nearly twenty years of

experience across different industries and functions. He has

worked with organizations like Voltas, Reliance, Reuters in

India and abroad.

Sanjay has been associated with education and training

since 2001. Till 2009, Sanjay was COO of IMS, where he

oversaw the IMS operations spread across 90 cities with an

intake of over 60,000 students annually.

Since 2010, Sanjay has been heading IMS Proschool where

the vision is to create employment-oriented certification

programs, which is widely cited as missing link in our

Learning by Doing

For students, focus on careers starts right from their first

lecture. The trainers at Proschool are all industry

professionals who know what exactly is required to

successfully enter any analytics career. The placement team,

along with the faculties, first understand what kind of career

roles the student is interested in and based on that, conduct

their technical exams.

IMS Proschool's

vision is to bridge

the gaps using skills,

to help students

achieve a better

career, as this

believes in one

thing – ‘Shaping

Careers, Building

Lives’

This provides an overview of what the strength of the

student is and where he should work on. Next step is mock

interviews conducted by industry experts. All these

steps give the student’s confidence a boost to crack the real

job interview.

IMS Proschool believes in Learning by Doing. Being true

to that, they have adapted ‘Active Learning’ methodology

in which before coming to the lecture, student first goes

through videos and solves some basic quizzes to

test their knowledge. In class, faculty spends 20-25% of the

time clearing the doubts if the student has any and the rest

75-80% is spent on solving case studies. This way, student

gets confident by solving case study and they also learn

what approach does the trainer take to solve a problem.

Key Milestones

Ÿ Proschool has been consistently ranked in Top 5 training

institutes for Analytics and Data Science for last five

years

Ÿ Proschool became an approved training partner of

National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in

2014

Ÿ Proschool has been associated with certification bodies

like CFA, FPSB, ACCA, CIMA and NSE to provide best

in class education

The Road Ahead

This pandemic has been ruthless for offline business. All

centres of Proschool had to be closed for the majority part

of a year. With only online mode of learning available with

Proschool, all its focus was to give the best learning

experience to its students. With this focus, the team was

able to manage their expenses without laying off any of

their employees. Without the fear of being laid off,

everyone at Proschool gave their 100%, even going and

working beyond their working hours.

“This pandemic has made us realise that we can do much

more than we can imagine, and we make our way into the

next phase, with high hopes and enthusiasm,” says Mr.

Sanjay.

“This pandemic has changed the way a student learns.

Digital learning has become a huge part of a student's life

and we plan to have more online and self-paced quality

learning available and affordable to all, be it in the field of

Finance, Accounts, Data Science, Cyber Security or Digital

Marketing,” concluded the Head of Products at IMS

Proschool, Allen Aravindan.

LEADERSHIP &

MANAGEMENT

You catch a cab! You direct the cab driver as to

where you want it to reach and when. The cab

driver follows your instructions and veers through

the busy traffic efficiently and manages all the workings of

the engine of the car, he puts on the right gear at the right

time, he drives it at the right speed that gives him fuel

efficiency and at the same time the needed speed to arrive at

the destination on time, he follows the rules of the traffic, he

is constantly looking at the Google Map on his car to see

that he is not away from the desired target. After the

efficient ride, you arrive at the right location.

This is an exact description of the differences of functions

that leadership and management entail in an organization.

You - the one who took the cab and instructed the driver

where to reach, are functioning as a leader; whereas the cab

driver - who managed the car, road, traffic rules etc to take

you to your desired location, is functioning as a manager.

The great management Guru, Peter Drucker termed the

difference between the functions of Leadership and

Management when he said, “Leadership is doing the right

thing, Management is doing things right.” Simply put, a

leader decides where to take the organization; a manager

sees to it that they reach there with the available resources.

Many people glorify leadership over management these

days. But both the functions are necessary to the success of

an organization. We should remember that both the

functions are complementary to each other. It is true that

today we have over managed organization, families,

societies and even nations and there is lack of leadership

but leadership without proper management is bound to be

stunted leadership. Let us see in brief both the functions.

Management:

“Management is the coordination of all resources through

the process of planning, organizing, directing and

controlling in order to attain stated objective.”

- Henry L Sisk.

From this definition, we all get the right picture of what

management entails. A Manager has to first plan how to

take his/her organization towards the desired destination.

This is the first creation. Now the second creation involves

the manager to organize the necessary resources, people,

time, money etc and direct them towards the desired end.

She/he has to keep the tab whether everything is on the

desired path and constantly take feedback and keep a

constant watch that everything is in line.

It's like the pilots who are constantly veering the aeroplane

towards the desired location. More than 90 % of the time

the aeroplane is away from the desired direction, but it

arrives at the desired location and that's where the

importance of pilots comes in. The pilots work like a

manager in planning the route to take, organizing and

directing the resources and the airplane and controlling it so

that it reaches its destination. Simply put by now it is clear

that the manger gets the work done.

Leadership:

“Leadership is a process of social influence which

maximizes the efforts of others towards the achievement of

a goal.” - Kevin Kruse.

This definition will throw some light on what is or what is

not leadership. Leadership doesn't come by position or

authority, it stems up when you are able to influence people

with your vision, behaviour, courage and skills. True

leadership is not external but internal as it inspires people

so that they maximize their efforts toward the achievement

of a goal. It is the leader who has given them the vision and

those goals that serve as stepping stones to the attainment of

the same.

We have had leaders like Mahatma Gandhi who could

translate a vision of free nation to the masses and through

his actions channelize the entire nation towards the

attainment of the same in non – violent way. A leader is

24

Need of the Hour

exemplified in a person like Mohammad Yunus (Noble

Peace Prize winner) who founded the Grameen Bank in

Bangladesh to organize funds for the poor artisans to bring

them out of debt and slavery. When you ask Mohammad

Yunus, his vision is ‘A world free of poverty.’

Many times, a vision outlives the life span of the leader and

it will require many leaders to attain it. A leader goes

further when he provides the necessary environment for his

people where they come together as a team and work

towards the attainment of the goal. Leadership styles differ

and they span from authoritarian, democratic, lassies faire,

transactional and now the servant leadership style.

Many times, it is situational leadership as put forth by Ken

Blanchard that works effectively as it helps the leader to be

flexible as per the contextual requirement. Leadership is

also influencing people to bring out their best game, their

hidden potential to the fore and channelize it towards

attainment of worthy ideals.

Leadership & Management:

So, what's our take from this? As mentioned in the

beginning, both roles are complementary, and both are

required for the growth and success of an organization.

Many problems in organization could be avoided if we heed

to this quote from Grace Hooper (US Navy Admiral), “We

manage things, and we lead people.”

Problems arise when we mix up the two and try to manage

people. Leadership is to do with the people; management on

the other hand has more to do with resources. What it

simply means is true leadership influences people to rise to

action, true leadership makes people responsible for

themselves, their actions and they need no supervision.

We today have a dearth of such leadership; we don't have

leaders to whom we can look up to and get inspired. We

find this lack in all areas viz. politics, organizations,

families, societies, religious institutions, schools etc. When

we take a survey, we find that all these are being managed

not led! It's good to have Management Schools (B Schools)

that churn out efficient managers, but the need of the hour

probably is ‘Leadership Schools’ today where young

effective leaders with encompassing vision walk out and

make our families, societies, institutions, nations and the

world better places. The answer lies in building up of

character.

Also, many managers need to learn to be leaders and many

leaders need to know how to manage when the times and

the context calls them to.

Sohan Tiwade

Four people are pushing a car and it is not moving an

inch, why? Another person walking by makes them aware

that two are pushing from behind while the other two are

pushing from front! He directs all four to push from one

side and the car moves. The 4 people are necessary to

help move the car, they are the managers, but the leader is

one who sees that their efforts are directed in the right

path! Let me end with this concocted quote about my

understanding of the two roles –

“A Leader sees what path we ought to take, a Manager

sees that we take the path.”

Data Analysis

Makings of a Good

Data Analyst

28

APRIL | 2021

APRIL | 2021

29

So, what is a data analyst specifically?

For starters, data analysts ascertain how data can be used in

order to answer questions and solve problems. They are

professionals who scrutinise information using data analysis

tools. Essentially, they study what is happening now to

identify trends and pull meaningful results from the raw

data to help their employers or clients make important

decisions by identifying various facts and trends.

This is the purely objective way of defining the role of a

data scientist. But then the question arises, what makes a

good data scientist? So, let us dive into the topic a little

more and take a look at some of the softer traits of what

would make a good data analyst.

Tell a story, but keep it simple

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it

enough.” - Albert Einstein

People respond well to information when it is laid to you in

a narrative sense. That is the core power of a story. Data

needs someone to clarify and simplify in terms that the line

of business, project managers as well as their team will

understand.

A good data analyst must be able to communicate or present

ideas clearly and confidently such that a non-technical

audience can grasp the subject matter easily.

Pay attention to detail

“The Devil is in the details,” goes a saying. This is an

important, yet silent, job responsibility of a data analyst.

This can help him/her to question or manage suspicious

events during any data analysis project to avoid making

expensive mistakes down the line.

Be creative with data

This pointer entails two major qualities that every good data

analyst should inculcate in their palate: Ability to

demonstrate the data proficiency; Flair and mastery on data

manipulation to solve or answer questions arising in an

organisation.

Ordinary people tend to ignore and translate less obvious

patterns into business meanings. But for a data analyst, with

gaining proficiency in the job, he/she must also be able to

identify such patterns and look at disjoint thought or action

to discern meaning.

Be a people person

This pointer is a less obvious one. Nonetheless, a good

analyst should be comfortable and liaising with a whole

range of people across different line of business; and since

he/she is very often middleman/woman between people and

the line of business.

This helps enhance the engagement between them and

people, enabling an easy understanding of business

requirements and delivering an outstanding data analytics

project.

Keep learning new tools and skills

“The intelligent man is one who has successfully fulfilled

many accomplishments and is yet willing to learn more.”-

Ed Parker.

A good data analyst must strive to be better all the time,

learning news ways of handling data, learning new tools,

doing presentations, communication styles. The world of

data analytics is very dynamic and changes a lot. So, resting

on laurels is hardly a positive thing for a data analyst. To

stand apart, you have to continue to develop yourself and

build capacity in terms of technical skills.

Know when to stop

Last, but certainly not the least, a good data analyst must be

able to judge when good is good enough while delivering a

data analytics project. For example, if for a project, the

solution you deliver is already 80% satisfactory, then trying

to add remaining 20% will cost you an extra (roughly) 50%

of your time, energy and resources.

A competent data analyst should bear in mind the option of

delivering the 80% as it is good enough, so as to enable

him/her to re-invest any additional time or resources on

other project priorities. T R
