Dear Coin Enthusiast,
I would like to thank you. Thank you for giving us something precious:
your time. I assure you, the time you take to discover Emporium Hamburg
is not lost time, but time well spent. German philosopher Manfred Hinrich
gave us the relevant phrase, "since people have been shaping coins, coins
have been shaping people". The phrase "purchasing coins is a matter of
trust" has applied for just as long. These principles, along with integrity and
reliability, are the mandatory guidelines each individual employee at
Emporium Hamburg has adopted. With this brochure I would like to present
Emporium Hamburg and all its facets to you.
For almost 50 years we have been fostering relationships with official state
mints around the world, mail order companies, retailers and collectors.
Generally you could say, the global "family" of coin enthusiasts. These
relationships and mutual co-operation are based on competence, reliability and
the trust developed from this.
In a time when people yearn for things that will last, the "coin experience"
combines timeless art with lasting value in a unique way. With this brochure
I hope to fill you with enthusiasm for the subject of "coins".
We wish you a warm welcome from Stoertebeker House!
There is one name in particular behind the success story of Emporium
Hamburg: Achim Becker. The company founder and Managing Director
provides insights in a personal conversation.
Company founder Achim Becker
"All speech is vain and empty unless
it is accompanied by action."
(loosely based on Demosthenes)
Mr Becker, what immediately comes to
mind when you hear the word "coins"?
The word "coins" instantly makes me think of
the word "history". The people who have used
the coins and paid for things with them. People
who have used them to achieve something and
brought joy to themselves - or even others.
Coin collectors and enthusiasts are
particularly passionate people. Ultimately
they pursue a passion which they don't
mind spending money on. What do you
think is the fascination
with collecting coins and
medals?
Becoming a coin collector
is often not planned. We
often purchase a coin out
of curiosity. Then we get a bit of background
information and we are instantly fascinated and
our interest is awakened. We ask Google about it
Becoming a coin collector
is often not planned.
and become deeply immersed in the subject. If the
circumstances allow, we then start to collect coins.
In this context, what is your favourite area
and why?
I don't have a favourite area as such. I am
actually interested in all subjects, from Croesus'
first gold coins to the silver and gold coins of
today.
It is generally assumed that the subject of
the "German Empire" is your area.
But that's not the case. The
coins before that period
are actually much more
interesting. At the start of the
German Empire much was
standardised. The empire
was established from what was a multitude of
states before 1871. Before that every kingdom,
every duchy had its own emblem on the reverse
6 7
and the portrait of the regents on the front. For
this reason, the money from the "old Germany"
is more exciting, because it is more historically
informative.
One outstanding feature of numismatics
is the sheer endless variety. How do you
manage to keep abreast of this?
Work, work and more work. It is a bit like
learning vocabulary.
You established Emporium Hamburg
almost 50 years ago. Can you briefly
outline how the coin trade has changed
over the years?
There has actually been a boom phase every
ten years. The first was in the years 1979/80
with the start of the Afghanistan war. Also in
1980 the Olympics took place in Moscow. At
that time the silver price reached 2,000 DM per
kilo, with the cost of gold having also increased
to around 42,000 DM. That
was a huge amount of money
at the time. In the year of
reunification in 1990 we
experienced the so-called
"GDR boom". This was
a phase during which
astronomic prices were
demanded for GDR coins. In
2000 the millennium was of
course the focus. It also coincided with the end
of the D-Mark and the introduction of the euro.
In 2000 the millennium was
of course the focus. It also
coincided with the end of
the D-Mark and the introduction
of the euro.
But the real passion for collecting developed
from the initial scepticism of the public towards
the euro, which remains to this day.
There is wonderful quote from the German
philosopher Manfred Hinrich, "since
people have been shaping coins, coins have
been shaping people". What has shaped
you? Both professionally and personally?
When I was at school, history was a subject
where numbers had to be learned by heart. It
was somewhat tiresome. Later however it had
become apparent that the dates and facts I had
learned formed the central thread in order to
move through the centuries in numismatics.
To what extent has the Hanseatic City
of Hamburg shaped you and the success of
your company?
I am an East Frisian and come from the corner
of the Jade Bight. So from the "flat country".
I came to Hamburg for the
first time in the 1950s. At that
time you could still clearly
see the deep impact of the
Second World War in the
city. However with every
visit our parents made to
the Hanseatic city with us
children, we clearly saw the
development, the progress,
how the city slowly grew out of the rubble.
I completed my second apprenticeship at the
Commerzbank here in Hamburg, and, at that
time, the city also became more and more a
part of me. The older I got, the more I learned
to love and appreciate the city. Unlike other
metropolises like Paris and London, the traffic
still flows here. It takes around an hour to travel
I am an East Frisian and
come from the corner of
the Jade Bight. So from the
"flat country".
by car from north to south or from east to
west – which is great. With around 1.8 million
inhabitants, Hamburg is also very manageable.
Hamburg also has a really fascinating history.
The Romans labelled the settlement around
the Hammaburg at the time as "Emporium
Hamburgum" on their maps. In 1971 I spent
six months in the USA. One day I went to the
"Emporium" supermarket there. I can't exactly
say why but the name immediately appealed to
me. I later looked up the meaning of the name
"emporium" and it said "main marketplace,
market" – well I never, that's perfect! And that's
where the company name came from. Aside
from that, I feel really at home in Hamburg.
Hamburg is a fascinating city, which, against
the backdrop of its geographic location and
its history, its people, their spirit and creativity,
combined with the personal commitment of the
individual, has developed a huge dynamism.
A credo you favour and also live by – based
loosely on Cicero – says "all the gold and
silver in the world does not outweigh the
value of a good virtue". Can you finally
explain your thoughts on this, your
personal credo?
A good virtue such as reliability, as I have
personally found in myself, is something I
demand more and more with increasing age.
Reliability is a virtue that we should encounter
everywhere, no matter whether in society or
the state, the team in a company or a small
family. Living together only works if there are
Living together only works
if there are basic rules that
everyone understands and
respects.
basic rules that everyone understands and
respects. But this respect is not a matter of
course. Often the respect for a virtue has to be
enforced. A very good example of this is the
depiction of the goddess Justitia. Most people
know that, in one hand she is holding scales,
symbolising justice, but then it gets a little
tenuous. Few people have noticed that Justitia
has her eyes covered, in order to be impartial.
However, virtually nobody will have seen that
the mythology has given Justitia a sword in her
other hand. This sword is necessary to create
the respect for justice. The virtue of reliability
has not been given a sword in its hand. Here it
is the personal understanding of the individual
to respect the basic rules of reliability. In this
respect, the reliability I am talking about here
is an enormous force for good, that you cannot
outweigh with all the gold and silver in the
world. It is reliability that shapes the value of
the individual and the value of the entire team
in a company, internally as well as externally -
so, "Nulla Vis Auri Et Agenti Pluris Quam Virtus
Aestimanda Est" – "All the gold and silver in the
world does not outweigh the value of a good
virtue". n
"A high-quality product is impressive if it is implemented perfectly.
But it only becomes a classic if it also arouses human emotions."
(Henry Ford)
At the end of the 19th Century, distinguished Hamburg native ship owner
Albert Ballin coined the innovative business idea "Think Big!", echoing
his personal motto "my field is the world". There is no question that this
demand has nothing to do with overconfidence, but with a healthy self-awareness
for Martin Luther's 500th birthday. In addition,
there are GDR commemorative coins entitled
"Wartburg", "Wittenberg Castle Church" and
"Luther's Birthplace in Eisleben" from 1982/1983
as well as the German 100 euro gold coin from
2011 featuring an image of the UNESCO World
Heritage Site of Wartburg. One should not
forg et the numismatic tributes to
Luther-follower Thomas Muentzer from 1989 in
the GDR and his friend Philipp Melanchthon as
a reformer in 1997 in the Federal Republic, as
well as the birthday coin of Lucas Cranach the
Elder, who painted Luther's portrait in 1972 in
the GDR. On a related note it is worth
mentioning a new release from Switzerland, as
the great anniversary of the
Reformation was also
honoured there with a
20 franc silver coin which
features portraits of Calvin
and Zwingli.
There is also a wide variety
of historic silver thalers and gold ducats from
the Reformation anniversary years of 1617,
1717, 1817 and 1917, which are purchased at
coin auctions by our Numismatic Department
as valuable individual pieces. These are then
offered to selected premium customers as an
upselling option via mail order telemarketing.
From all of these commemorative coins we
develop customised products which take into
Offers
that inspire coin
collectors.
account the face value and the metal as well as
different price categories. We create a coherent
offer concept with the product details and
selling points, so that the potential customer
can quickly recognise the attractiveness of
the offer. It automatically includes the
corresponding packaging, such as a highquality
collector's case made of wood, a product
brochure with numismatic details and
background information on the topic. High-end
gold sets are accompanied by books on the
same topic, so that the collector can delve
deeper into the product. As a result, with each
new set of coins we develop a desirable product
based on an interesting theme that captures the
attention of the public and
that many coin collectors
will find hard to resist.
In the B-to-B sector we are
happy to present our concepts
personally to the relevant
product managers. If required
we will provide background information,
photos and our own advertising material as a
template.
On a European level, coins of the British royal
family are popular collection themes. Queen
Elizabeth II celebrated her 90th birthday in
2016. 2017 was her 65th coronation
anniversary and her 70th wedding anniversary
with Prince Philip. In addition, 2017 marked the
centenary of the Royal House of Windsor and
modern gold Sovereigns turned 200 years old.
This opened up a wide range of opportunities
to combine the Royal Mint's new issues with
the older historical silver and gold coins of
George III, George IV, William IV, Victoria,
Edward VII, George V, George VI and
Elizabeth II.
In Great Britain, as the head of state, the Queen
adorns the obverse of coins with her portrait
and insignia. Due to her long reign, six
different portraits of the monarch have been
issued so far, which gracefully depict her in
different periods starting from 1957
until today. This is the basis for compiling
interesting coin sets including high-quality,
informative accessories, which trace the life of
the queen and her history in a European context
over 60 years. Again, the procedure is similar
and includes comprehensive offer management
of the product concept, features, positioning,
calculation and procurement as well as
marketing in the respective sales channels. n
Anyone who has visited the Hanseatic city often comes to the conclusion
at the end of their trip that Hamburg is one of the most beautiful cities
in the world. But this beautiful place has had to survive some tragedies in
the past.
Stoertebeker House
"Knowing is not enough, we must apply.
Willing is not enough, we must do."
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)
Hamburg suffered greatly as a result of air raids
during the Second World War. Nevertheless, a
number of imposing office blocks and other
buildings have survived, such as the Chilehaus
and the Sprinkenhof, the city hall in the centre
of the city with its 112 metre high tower and of
course the Hamburg landmark, the 132 meter
high St. Michael's Church, affectionately known
as "Michel".
Stoertebeker House was to earn its place in the
ranks of such traditional Hanseatic buildings
upon completion in 2004 and set an example
in Hamm-Sued, a district that
was badly damaged in the
war.
Many people ask, "Why
Stoertebeker House in
particular?" Now, this
requires some explanation, but put simply,
as an entrepreneur you have to develop the
nature of a seafarer to be able to survive the
ups and downs. And 500 years ago Stoertebeker
said, "The spirit of the crew determines the
journey. Under full sail to new endeavours...".
Thanks to his legendary
reputation, Stoertebeker
became a folk hero.
Furthermore, the name "Klaus Stoertebeker" is
closely connected with the history of the city of
Hamburg to this day. Although dubbed a pirate,
there is a monument in his glorious memory in
the Port of Hamburg at Grasbrook.
Due to his legendary reputation, Stoertebeker
became a folk hero - from pirate to privateer
- with a tragic end. Like Robin Hood he used
the spoils of his privateering to benefit the poor
and hungry, until he and his Victual Brothers
were captured, taken prisoner and beheaded in
1401.
But they were not ridding
themselves of a band
of robbers, but rather a
brotherhood that behaved
quite well in the context of
the legal norm at that time.
The name "Stoertebeker House" aims to
combine the vividness of history with the ideas
of the invincibility of permissive trade.
For building owner and Emporium Hamburg
40
41
We are there for you –
Together we are strong!
Managing Director Achim Becker, from the
start it was important for Stoertebeker House
not to be another faceless office complex,
but an architectural point of interest with
landmark character representing Hanseatic
merchant spirit. The building is intended to be
a fortress against any type of mid-size business
discrimination, instead remaining open to
promising ideas and any form of creativity.
Stoertebeker House
Home of Emporium Hamburg
With the clinker facade, building owner Becker
continues a good Hanseatic tradition and, with
the idea for the building to be entirely devoted
to the mid-size businesses, he conquered new
frontiers.
In addition, Stoertebeker House shows
fascinating attention to detail. Right under the
clock face on Borstelmannsweg, for example,
there is a Stoertebeker carillon.
Every day just before noon two ships appear,
followed by six Victual Brothers led by
Stoertebeker and Goedeke Michel, and then
disappear again. In the second circuit the
executioner appears and with every second
stroke of the bell he beheads one of the six
Victual Brothers.
The roofs and domes of the House are dressed
in copper by skilled artisan hands. Above the
main entrance, facing the roundabout, on the
level of the terrace on the 6th floor, kneeling
on a semi-circular heavy sandstone ledge, there
is a bronze figure of Atlas bearing the great
burden of the globe on his shoulders.
These small storytelling details run like a common
thread throughout the building. Compass rose
mosaics in the floor, tall columns, a magnificent
domed hall, radiators with dragon heads,
leaded windows, hand-forged art nouveau
ornaments for the banisters – all of this was
very important to the building owner, to show
that Stoertebeker House is designed by human
hands with dedication and warmth. Solely
intended to highlight Hanseatic merchant
spirit and virtues in combination with a
feel-good atmosphere for employees and
customers. n
