– one after 12 weeks

and the second after a

will be eligible for a

grant 1.5 times higher

their salary.

Labour Minister Jason

Copping said in an

the

job growth as the

from the COVID-19

pandemic.

“There’s lots of

businesses which are

continuing to operate –

the vast majority are

continuing to operate

right now. They want to

prime the pump so that

as we come out of the

pandemic, we can hit

the ground running,”

Copping said.

Copping said

a second

followed by a

third, leaving

room to make

tweaks in

between rounds.

“Part of that is because

we also recognize that

different sectors (will)

recover at different

times over the course

of the next year,” said

Copping.

Businesses that are

receiving the federal

wage top-up can utilize

both grant programs,

but not for the same job

position, and the public

sector won’t be

eligible.

Speculation swirled in

the legislature in

March as to whether

the province would have

the program in place in

time to secure full

federal funding.

When it was

first outlined in the

budget, Jobs Now

relied on the province

spending 80 per cent of

$185 million – or $148

million – before April 1

in order to receive the

federal government’s

share of support.

After lengthy talks with

Ottawa, the premier

announced in late April

that the federal

government agreed to

push the cash into this

fiscal year.

Wednesday’s

announcement comes

after Alberta posted

its largest longterm

unemployment

rate since the data

began being collected

in 1982.

The province’s three per

cent long-term

unemployment rate is

also the largest in the

country. Nationally,

Canada’s long-term

unemployment sits at

1.5 per cent as of April.

Helping India breathe again requires coming together as Canadians

Edmonton (ATB) We’ve all seen or heard about

it by now — India collectively struggling to

breathe under the latest crushing wave of COVID-

19. Sons and daughters running between hospitals,

trying to find a bed for a sick parent. Family

members taking to social media to find an

oxygen tank as a loved one gasps for breath.

Orphaned children left behind and now at risk of

trafficking. While most of us have seen it in the

news, many of us in Canada have heard the

painful stories directly from Indian family members

and friends.

The exponential increase in COVID-19

cases in India – a country representing almost

one fifth of the planet’s population – is alarming.

In the past two months, the number of new cases

grew

from around 18,000 to more than 410,000 per

day. In the past 24 hours, India registered about

half of all new COVID-19 cases worldwide. There

are significant risks of further virus mutation and

global spread.

What happens in India matters to all of

us. It is painfully ironic that India is a major producer

of vaccines to the world – including to

Canada. Many lower income countries have also

been counting on shipments and donations of

vaccines from India to help their own vaccination

efforts. This too is now at risk. Although the

pictures in the news from India may look different

from what we see here at home, we feel this

personally. In Canada, we continue to see our

own emergency rooms and ICUs

pushed to the brink as they care for people affected

by this virus and its mutations. That’s

why we know how important it is to take urgent

action to stem the tide. As the CEOs and executive

directors of leading Canadian humanitarian

response agencies,

working together as the Humanitarian Coalition

during major emergencies, we know that Canadians

are quick to help their global neighbours

in their hour of need. That includes India. Many

of our agencies have long-standing relationships

with partners and sister organizations in India.

Our colleagues on the ground have asked for

our assistance and they are guiding our response

to ensure the swift, efficient and effective use of

our support. Currently, they are working hard to

provide desperately needed oxygen, PPE, medical

supplies, food, hygiene items and vaccine

promotion. Together we are making a difference,

but we need to do more.

The Humanitarian Coalition is calling on

Canadians to join us in meeting the pressing

needs during this crisis. By working together,

we save on costs, deliver direct impact, and ensure

stronger programs. Helping India at this

urgent moment is both the right thing and the

smart thing to do. By working together through

the Humanitarian Coalition, we are saving more

lives. And that is the Canadian thing to do. Canadians

can donate for emergency assistance

to India online at www.together.ca or by phone

at 1-855-461-2154.

Asian

Star

Preetam Kumar Sharma

Native village/Country, parents’

background

I was born in Kankroli, Rajasthan, India.

My father worked as an administrator at the

Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton.

My mother worked there as well.

Your early education

I was studying a Bachelor of Commerce degree

in India before moving to Canada at the age of

18. I then did some upgrading courses from

Victoria Composite High School.

When & why you came to Canada?

I arrived to join my family. My father came to

Canada in 1967, my mother and two younger

brothers came in 1973, and my another brother

and I joined them in 1974.

How many dollars you brought in?

I had just eight dollars.

What you did for initial survival?

My family supported me. I was too young with

no one dependent on me to bother worrying

about finances. I went to school to do some

upgrading. My parents took care of my needs.

Your career advancement initiatives and

present occupation

I studied Electrical Engineering Technology at

NAIT. Presently, I am retiree as City of

Edmonton employee.

Your regret in life

I have no regrets in life. I lived my life the way

I wanted to live and did things that gave me

happiness. I am very content in the life I have

carved for myself.

Pick any one of your the best achievements

I am very proud of my numerous years of

volunteer work with the Alberta Hindi Parishad;

hundreds of our children born here have learnt

to read and write Hindi at our Hindi school. As

the ex-President of the Hindu Society of Alberta

and the Council of Indian Societies, I believe

my work along with the other members of these

societies has helped to create an even stronger

and cohesive Indian Community here in

Edmonton. My hope is that we can continue

implementing programs that help our Indian

and Canadian children grow. I am also ex-

President of Shanti Niketan Society for Semi-

Retired & Seniors and Director, Edmonton

Heritage Festival. My greatest achievement is

Diamond Jubilee Medal I received in

recognition of my volunteer work.

Were you ever discriminated?

Yes. Who hasn’t?

What you miss in Canada?

India was my first home and I will always have

fond memories of growing up there with my

brothers. Having them here though makes me

miss India less. We still reminisce from time

to time about all the trouble we used to make

as kids.

Are you happy in Canada?

Yes, of course. I am so proud to be Indo-

Canadian. My parents, my wife(Gunjan), my

brothers and my children are here along with

my many friends, some as close to me as my

family. I have everything and everyone I need.

Why?

I mainly came here because of my parents. I

stayed because of my children. My children

have had many opportunities, which led them

to success. This would never have been

possible back home. Also, Canada’s peaceful

atmosphere has left a mark on my heart.

Any comments on Canada’s weather

As a whole, one can enjoy all four seasons. I

love fall when the leaves change colours. I am

getting a little tired of winters now. It is getting

harder to clean all the snow.

Any comments on Canada’s culture

Basically, I like the overall freedom. Minorities’

values and beliefs are accepted and respected

by mainstream society.

What brought you success in Canada?

Honesty, hard work, family support, networking

and willingness to accept challenges have

brought me success.

Are you willing to help new immigrants?

Always.

How?

Our folks can count on me for any advice and

support concerning local issues. Also, I can

connect them to right resources, whether it’s

finding housing or learning how to fill out an

application.

Your message for Asians of Canada

Go out and mingle with mainstream society.

All youths should put their foot forward to help

people in distress in any way they can. Spousal

abuse, child abuse and drugs are killing our

society and need our co-operated action to

eliminate these social evils.

I am seeing a lot of our young people

volunteering for many societies and I am proud

of our community’s contribution to all the non

profit associations. We should give back to

community we live in.

Canadian charities join forces

to raise funds for India

Ottawa, (ATB) – As the devastation brought

on by the second wave of COVID-19

continues to unfold in India, leading

Canadian aid agencies – through the

Humanitarian Coalition – are launching an

appeal to raise funds and rush emergency

assistance to people in need.

The number of cases of COVID-19

has surpassed 20 million and the death toll

has passed 200,000. The deadly surge in

infections is overwhelming health services

across the country, leading to a lack of

beds, healthcare personnel, and oxygen.

The wave of critical illness, coupled

with lockdowns and curfews, is having a

serious impact on livelihoods and food

security across the country.

Humanitarian Coalition

members are already actively responding

to the crisis by supporting the healthcare

system with oxygen, ventilators, field

hospitals and PPE, promoting COVID

vaccination and safe hygiene practices, and

ensuring food security and basic survival

for vulnerable families.

Death in Indian villages

That the importance of testing

to prevent Covid-related deaths cannot

be underestimated is evident from the

over 110 fatalities that have occurred

in just four villages of Haryana. Of

these, 35 have taken place in the native

village of Chief Minister Khattar. In the

absence of a proper Covid test result,

the cause of death cannot be

ascertained with finality in these cases,

but the high mortality figures are

enough to ring alarm bells and call for

preventive measures since the deaths

raise question marks over the

healthcare system and its adequacy.

While the villagers have not been

forthcoming in getting tested despite

door-to-door surveys by the health

department, they have made a start by

getting vaccinated. The state should

make similar efforts to inspire

confidence and encourage the

villagers to get tested for timely

detection and treatment. A surveillance

of every village has been ordered to

detect influenza-like symptoms, but it

is equally important for the residents

to report symptoms or signs of

discomfort so that curative measures

can be taken early on.

The rapid spread of the virus in

rural areas has gone unchecked,

particularly in UP. The panchayat polls

and reverse migration of people from

the cities because of the loss of

livelihood caused by the extended

lockdown enhanced the danger of the

virus spreading among the local

population, besides the violation of

Covid-appropriate protocol. Cases

not getting reported also increase the

risk. Already, there have been

apprehensions over the Covid fatality

rate being higher in the rural areas.

The government has made

recommendations like setting up

Covid care centres in the villages to

handle both symptomatic and

asymptomatic cases but their

functioning remains in doubt because

of the lack of doctors and other

healthcare staff, besides the required

wherewithal like oxygen or medicines.

While the steps may help in giving

healthcare facilities a boost in the rural

areas and upgrade them, the situation

calls for pragmatic measures to

prevent an outbreak, check mortality

and improve chances of recovery.

(March 21-April 19)

(April 21-May 20) (May 21-June 20)

You retain

professional power

and good health

after a period of

opposition and strife as Yin and Yang energies

are finely tuned this week. You recover from

illness or debility and regain strength and energy.

A romantic involvement flowers into commitment

or marriage. Change brings stability and balance

this week. You tend to be a workaholic; it is time

to look upon life as a mystery to be lived rather

than a business to be managed. Take a break

and relax as your work can flow more smoothly

from a relaxed state of mind. Wait for clarity and

totality before taking an important step!

You initiate a current

of forceful energy to

achieve professional

goals and business

targets this week. You are able to influence trends

and changes in your field of activity. Despite having

a hold on situations and people, power does not

corrupt you but there is a harmony of rule and

justice that you are appreciated for. You are bold

and forthright when fighting in controversial issues

or resolving turbulent situations. There can be

some restless and obstinate people around you

whom you pacify with quiet authority. You have the

courage to make commitments in personal

relationships despite any opposition.

You can expect the

unexpected this

week in different

aspects of life! The

week starts with much excitement at home and at

work. Your travel plans should be kept flexible as

changes are likely. You may feel compelled by an

inner urge to visit certain forgotten places, friends

or family and connect with them once again.

Children may discuss personal matters and

important situations to gain advice and counsel. It

is best to live in the moment totally and

spontaneously to enjoy whatever life brings. It’s

time to welcome new people and systems at work

to enhance creativity and production.

(June 22-July 22) (July 23-August 22) (August 23-September 22)

You are likely to

fall in love with a

new person or an

idea this week!

Things happen quickly and you need to make

snap decisions or you are liable to miss a

personal or professional opportunity for growth

and expansion. This is a time of movement and

change, be it inner or outer or both. It’s best to

embrace the new in any aspect as the travelling

onwards promises to be easy and also brings a

sense of adventure. This attitude of openness

and acceptance invites new friends and

experiences in your life. A brief vacation is on

the cards for some!

A pleasure trip with

family or friends is

on the cards this

week! There is a

natural harmony and ease in personal

relationships. Happiness blended with success

gives you a sense of well-being and satisfaction

as there is no strain or stress in professional and

personal situations. This is a time of new

beginnings for business ventures and professional

projects that increase your earning power and

wealth. However, it is best to remain aware and

persistent in your effort towards achievement or

things can go out of hand. Short term loans and

projects are available and useful at this point.

Earthy and creative

aspects are your

focus and priority

this week. You are

likely to redecorate living and working spaces to

change ambiance and energy around you as there

has been a subtle and deep change inside. You

have an inner clarity that manifests in professional

ventures and personal relationships. This new

perspective takes you towards spiritual growth.

You are in control and create a new atmosphere

around you at work and at home. You are

ambitious in professional aspects with financial

targets lined up to be met. You entertain with

charm and exude warmth to friends and family.

(September 23-October 20) (October 23 - November 21) (November 22-December 21)

Inner transformation

and outer changes

are on the cards this

week! You make

adjustments in Yin (receptive) and Yang (dynamic)

energies to bring balance in personal and

professional aspects. It’s important to be in the

present and experience each moment totally rather

than be preoccupied with the past or plan for the

future. You may miss an important professional

opportunity or personal experience that presents

itself, if you are not aware and alert. Creative

achievement, spiritual growth and a taste of freedom

are all yours if you drop judgments, preferences and

attachments to details about your long-term plans.

You have the tiger

by the tail this week

as you control

personal and

professional situations with dynamic energy and

balance. Love and romance are on the cards as

personal relationships flower into lasting

commitments. You are youthful, brilliant and

individualistic while dealing with tough

professional situations and business

partnerships. You are daring with new, original

ideas without fear of rejection. You are

enthusiastic about life and can be sudden in love

or anger. Beware of superficial friends and

theatrical people during celebrations.

You tend to dwell

on the past and

rake up old issues,

which open old

wounds and bring fresh pain in relationships. It’s

best to bid good-bye to the past and move into

the new and positive current for the future. There

can be disruption and strife at work if promises

are not fulfilled and targets not met. Delay in

completion of projects cannot be ruled out. You

may get into a naughty mood and enjoy

forbidden pleasures like staying away from work,

over eating or indulging in addictions like

smoking or drinking. There is honesty in money

transactions and business deals.

(December 22-January 19) (January 20-February 19) (February 19- March 19)

Your strong spirit

feels defeated as

you give in to great

expectations that

are not met this week. Things are not as bad as

they look to you and disappointment is temporary.

You feel rejuvenated with all the attention you get

from family and friends. Let your hair down and

celebrate life rather than worry about how things

should be and try to control situations or people.

Personal relationships and business partnerships

or collaborations need a bit of time and space to

regain balance. It is high time you said goodbye

to the past, however beautiful it may have been. A

Scorpio person is supportive.

The only

unchanging thing in

the world is change

itself! It’s best to

get centered within and watch the changes that

swing into your life this week. Take a quantum

leap into any pursuit and you are likely to gain

experience and achieve growth. A new vision in

business and a fresh perspective in relationships

is needed for things to change positively. Don’t

allow life and patterns to repeat mindlessly. An

enjoyable trip is likely! Unexpected happenings

at work and surprises at home are on the cards!

Birth of a new consciousness takes you to a

higher vantage point.

You have an

abundance of energy

and enthusiasm to

achieve success in a

professional venture this week. Love and

understanding in personal relationships are an

invaluable support for achieving victory in competitive

situations and business ventures. You are lucky in

love and have loyal friends around you who give you

attention and care when you need it. Your

acceptance of personal and professional challenges

leads to success, exposure and fame. Patience

and waiting for something to happen brings its own

rewards! Keep in mind that valleys and peaks are

part of the parade of life and this too shall pass.
