Remember; Apart from Competition Triples, all other competition games must be played outside of Wednesday
and Saturday afternoon bowls days.

VETERANS GOLF
There were 29 players hitting off last Friday, October 12 in wet and wild conditions, but only a few completed the
18 holes, so there are no official results. Prizes were given for long drives, nearest the pins and raffle with
results being –

The rained out Wyong game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, October 30 and everyone is invited to come up
for a game, though not in the competition, and pay the pro
green fees which are around $26. It is a great course with W
I D E fairways so come up and experience a different course.

WALKERS REPORT
STRICKLAND STATE FOREST – CENTRAL COAST – Mon 8 th Oct. It was a cool overcast day – just
perfect for a great walk through a forest. Ten members and one visitor met at Bambara Reserve
Belrose for the drive north to Somersby. We entered the Strickland Forest and had morning tea at
Banksia Picnic Area (good facilities) before shuffling two cars to the lower Stoney
Creek car park. We then walked from the picnic area down the hill through
magnificent cabbage tree ferns. At the end of the Cabbage Fern trail we proceeded
along the Stony Creek trail and crossed the creek to the Aboretum (hard for me to
say) where we went “Wow” many times and strained our necks as we marvelled at
the very tall and straight grey gums, red cedars (Toona ciliata) and hoop pines
(Araucaria cunninghamii). After passing over a rope bridge we came upon the bunya
pine (Araucaria bidwillii) which are quite different and have very prickly leaves.
We then took the Bell Bird trail which was aptly named before returning to the Aboretum trail and our
cars at the Stoney Creek car park. We drove back up the long hill to the Banksia Picnic area and had lunch.
After lunch we walked along the relatively short Strickland Falls Trail where there were heaps of Gymea
Lilies. Unfortunately only a few lilies were in flower and only a trickle of water was coming over the falls.
The trail continued on a lower level where we passed through more magnificent red cedars before we
climbed slowly back to our cars to head back home. This 7km walk was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
JUMPY
WALKERS 16th BIRTHDAY – Sun 14 th Oct. At Davidson Park 81 Walkers celebrated our 16 th Birthday
with a picnic lunch of chicken, salad, cheesecake and of course the mandatory birthday cake. Amongst the
guests it was pleasing to welcome Herby Herbert, the former Club President who initiated the formation of
the Walkers Section all those years ago. Patron John Morrison then told those present of the first walk the
Section undertook on the 13 th October 1966, from the Club through the Garigal bush via the Lyrebird track
down to Davidson Park & back up Warringah Rd returning to the Club. This walk was
more strenuous than expected and all deemed it too hard and too long. 31 Walkers
started the walk and after this inauspicious start it is pleasing to note that our numbers
have now grown to over 160 members. We must be doing something right.
Special thanks to Daphne for all her hard work to make the day a success and to
President Pam and all the Ladies and Gents who helped ensure the Walkers Birthday
was a successful day.
