The show Is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Women's Action League, with Mrs. Patsy Anderson serving as General Chairman. Entries will be accepted in three divisions: Children (through Elementary grades) Youth (Junior High through High School) and Adult. Ribbons and Best of Show trophies will be presented in each division. Major categories will be in Art. Handwork. Crafts, Collections and Miscellaneous. 1975 rules are as follows: 1 . Entry fee will be 25c per entry for youth and children and 50c for adults. 2. Any entry taking a ribbon or trophy in previous local shows will not be eligible. 3. All work must be that of entrant. 4. Anyone desiring to sell exhibited work may do so with the stipulation they do not have the price displayed on the item before judging, and that it may not be removed from the premises until after the show A small commission of 10 will be charged on all sates. 6. Show building will be open from 9 to 5 Thursday, May 8, and from 9 until 10 a.m. on Friday, May 9 No entries will be accepted after that time. Judging will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 9 and the building will be closed at that time. 7. Exhibitors are asked to pick to work at 5:00 p.m on May 10. 8. Entry blanks may be picked up at the Chamber office in Knox City. W. Reynolds, superintendent of the Putnam Schools has an unusual hobby. It is an antique business housed in an old abandoned 70,000-barre- l oil storage tank. R. W., as his friends call him, opens his place called the FLEAMK on weekends and by appointment when it does not interfere with his school affairs. He is a former teacher in Haskell and Paint Creek Schools. There arc two questions that are asked by most of those entering the big tank for the first time: Where do you get it and how long have you been collecting it? The answer to the first one is easy because he has been "at it" for about five years. Answering the second is a bit more complicated because he makes auctions, estate sales, buys from other dealers and individuals and gets some of it from people who bring it to him He usually concludes his explanation by saying that when people find out you are the "junk" man they bring it to you. Word of the FLEAMK has gone all over the world via Ap, UPI. New York Times News Service, Wall Street Journal and, just recently, by CBS News. In talking to R. W. you get the impression that he enjoys his hobHy because the business is his to run the way he likes, and, according to him, "You don't have to think much to do it." By Robert L Haney Science Writer The Texas Ayrir.iiltnr.il Experiment Station Germ Warfare Is Declared on Mosquitoes, those bloodsucking parasites that make life a misery for animals and mankind, have parasites of their own! And It's to the enemies of the mosquito that entomologists arc looking for help in controlling tliese pests. Insecticides alone can't do the job; in the last few years some species of mosquitoes have developed resistance. In many places, larger and laiger doses of insecticide give less and less control. This resistance, plus widespread concern for the safety of our environment, lias emphasied the need lor a variety of control methods. The biological approach to mosquito control offers great hope. It uses parasites, pathogens (disease) and predators to reduce mosquito populations to tolerable levels. Entomologists with the Experiment Station say pathogens look especially promising as one answer to mosqui- to-related problems in Texas. Dr. Jim Olson, project leader for mosquito research, says there are a large number of pathogenic agents, discovered by scientists throughout the world, that show promise as mosquito control agents. Among these agents, those that belong to the nematode (round worms), fungi and protozoa (single-celle- d animals) groups have received the most intensive study. Some of these mosquito species arc very important because they serve as vectors (carriers) of disease in Texas. "We don't want to leave any false impressions." These habitats include eveiything from old tin cans to crab holes, tree holes and rock pools along rivers and creeks. On the basis of confinement, these mosquito species would be the ones that we would look to first in terms of using parasite control." says Olson. "Resistance of some mosquitoes to infection by a parasite is also a problem. In the case of the protozoan that we arc investigating, we have found some mosquito species that can resist infections even undci confined laboratory conditions. "Thus, we cither have to figure out how to compromise this resistance or just accept the fact that we cannot use the parasite for the control of these particular species. Failure of a given pathogen to work in some cases is a fact of life that scientists must learn to live with. When this happens, you use the parasite where it will work and look for othei parasites or other control methods that are effective in cases where your parasite doesn't work. . A number of items on the agenda were disposed of. several committee reports were heard including a report that additional Miring had been done on the Haskell County Museum. College News Dr. Gustavc Ferrc, of academic affairs at North Texas State University, has named 1,412 students to the fall semester honor roll. Some 345 students earned all "A's" to make the 4.0 honor list, and 1,067 achieved the 3.5 listing, which includes those students whose grade average is midway between an "A" and a "B".
