THE
MISSIONAL
JOURNEY
We are all on
mission to bring
the gospel to
the world
Intro
Our purpose as believers in Jesus is to go on
mission for Him and tell the world about His
goodness. We are instructed to share the good
news of Jesus, to be God's hands and feet, and to
love others as Christ loves us.
We are instructed to go into our city, state,
country, and world and share the gospel. Over
these next three days, we will learn about how
Paul went on three different journeys to share
the message of Jesus. We will learn lessons from
Paul as we think about how we can go into
different areas to tell others about Jesus.
We are all called to be on mission
Day 1
Paul's First
Missionary Journey
Acts 13-14
Biblical account
On arriving there, they gathered the church together
and reported all that God had done through them
and how he had opened a door of faith to the
Gentiles.
Acts 14:27
To read the full story
of Paul's first
missionary journey,
see Acts 13-14.
Overview
Paul went on three different missionary journeys
to spread the gospel to many different countries
and people. The first of his three missionary
journeys was most likely in the years AD 47
through 48.
Paul and Barnabas were called by the Holy Sprit
and was sent off by the Church of Antioch. They
started preaching in the synagogue in Salamis on
the island of Cyprus. This entire journey started
in Syria and took Paul and Barnabas to Cyprus
and Asia Minor.
Overview
Paul and Barnabas accomplished many great
things on their first missionary journey. During
their journey, the Roman proconsul, Sergius
Paulus, became a believer. When they preached
in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch, Paul
showed how Jesus fulfilled Jewish prophesy.
Paul and Barnabas also preached in Iconium. At
Iconium, many Jews and Gentiles believed, but
many did not. Paul healed a man at the gates of
Lystra. However, he is stoned in Lystra when the
unbelieving Jews from Antioch and Iconium
arrive. Paul and Barnabas made many disciples
in Derbe. In this region of Lystra, Timothy heard
the gospel and was saved.
Application
There are three main points we can learn
from Paul's first missionary journey.
God has called us to be missionaries
We need to share the Gospel with those
around us
Partners in ministry is imperative
Throughout the Bible, we see many
working together to spread the Gospel.
Working with others provides more
ministry opportunities.
It is important to have a supportive
home church
The church at Antioch was supportive of
Paul and Barnabas. We must be a part of
a church that is supportive of
missionaries and the spreading of the
gospel.
Day 2
Paul's second
Missionary Journey
Acts 15:36-18:22
Biblical account
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will
be saved—you and your household.”
Acts 16:31
To read the full story
of Paul's first
missionary journey,
see Acts 15:36-18:22.
Overview
Paul's second missionary journey began about a
year or two after his first journey. Paul suggested
that he and Barnabas revisit the churches of
their first missionary journey. However, a
disagreement caused them to split. The
disagreement between Paul and Barnabas
resulted in two missionary teams sharing the
Gospel instead of one.
On this missionary journey, Paul and Silas, who
joined Paul instead of Barnabas, were redirected
by God to Greece. Because they were redirected,
theGospel was brought to Europe.
Overview
Paul was imprisoned, but that did not stop him
from rejoicing to suffer for Christ. Paul and the
missionary team sang in jail before an
earthquake opened the cell doors and broke
them free of their chains. The jailer saw this and
he and his family believed in Jesus.
Paul preached to a curious audience on Mars
Hill. Paul preached on how the people could
know God and could worship without idols.
Some came to faith while others did not.
Application
There are three main points we can learn
from Paul's second missionary journey.
God can bring good from
disagreements
God turned the disagreement of Paul and
Barnabas into an opportunity to send out
two missionary teams.
We must be dependent on directions
from the Holy Spirit
Because Paul listened to the directions of
the Holy Spirit, the Gospel was brought to
Europe.
We can praise God in hard times
Paul praised God in the jail cell. We can
praise God in hard times as well.
Day 3
Paul's third
Missionary Journey
Acts 18:23-20:38
Biblical account
21 After all this had happened, Paul decided to go
to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and
Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must
visit Rome also.” 22 He sent two of his helpers,
Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed
in the province of Asia a little longer.
Acts 19:21-22
To read the full story
of Paul's first
missionary journey,
see Acts 18:23-20:38.
Overview
In Paul's final missionary journey, he was able to
get back in touch with many of the churches he
previously established. Also, he established new
churches. During his third missionary journey,
Paul preached in Asia Minor. There was much
evidence that God was with Paul and confirming
his message.
Paul met many passionate people and
performed many miracles. This third missionary
journey also introduced us to many great
Christian leaders such as Priscilla, Aquila, and
Apollos.
Overview
Paul spent three months teaching in the
synagogue in Ephesus. Some rejected the
message from Paul and became abusive. Also,
Paul performed many extraordinary miracles
here. The Holy Spirit worked through Paul and
the name of Jesus grew higher.
Paul raised a man named Eutychus from the
dead. Eutychus fell from a window, but Paul was
able, through God's power, to bring him back to
life. Towards the end of his third missionary
journey, Paul knew he would soon be
imprisoned and most likely killed.
Application
There are three main points we can learn
from Paul's third missionary journey.
Partner with God to do His work
Throughout his missionary journeys, Paul
continually partnered with God instead of
just using His name.
Anyone can come to faith in God
During this journey, some magicians that
practiced magic turned from their wicked
ways and repented. They put their faith in
Jesus.
Trust God's directions
Paul had a strong faith and trust in God's
directions to guide him through these
journeys. We can have the same faith and
trust as God's promises and directions
never fail.
