HOSPITALS.
t A noted' coagregational .minister of
Chicago, during a recent interview,
remarked: "Tliis; is the age or hos-
^italB/i hot of:catliedrals?' The epigram
is significant. In mediaeval
times when the ascetic clement was
strong among religious people, to
build an imposing edifice in a prom-
Ihent position, and decorated with
the most , elaborate and beautiful
liandiwork, was the height of the people's
ambition. In so doing they
^-expressed their .devotion^ to the cause'
they loved, and it! had: wonderful-re-^
flex. influence on their lives. The
work had been done in the spirit of.
ardent affection , and the edifice bc-
^ came the symbol of their religion for
them—the symbol of ail their noblest
aspirations and hopes.'
Now y?e are told that that age has
passed , away. Why? Because too
often the symbol was an empty one,
and ^the life behind it was unworthy
of it; Now the age asks for hospitals.
Why? Because above all else
it asks for genuineness in life and
character. It says: "Shew me the
evidence of your faith, let us have a
practical demonstration; you believe
in the brotherhood of man; here are
men needing assistance,, are you ready
to assist? " And many a man
whose faith in but small is perfectly
sound when facing this practical test.
In fa-pt all men are—except pagans.
