Religious Practices Message
Melissa Immel & Mark Wolkow
We hope everyone is enjoying the warm weather and beginning to return to
normal activities post-pandemic safely. The Reopening Team is actively
meeting and looking for ways to begin worshiping and gathering at shul soon.
At this point, we are projecting that Shabbat services will re-commence in
person on Friday, July 9th. Keep an eye on your bulletins and newsletters for
confirmation of that date and relevant safety precautions.
Our number one goal is to ensure the safety of every staff member, congregant,
and guest who enters the building. In the meantime, we continue to hold
Services via Zoom and will continue to do so after we are back in person in the
Sanctuary (hybrid services). We aim to keep services relevant, melodic, typically
60-70 minutes, desire to meet your needs, and invite any suggestions.
June will feature various events: Charli Braccille becomes a Bat Mitzvah on
June 5 th and Board and ASTY Installations are scheduled for the 11 th .
Mindfulness & Meditation on the 12 th and Taking Hold of Torah on the 19 th
have been cancelled.
We look forward to seeing you at Zoom-streaming Shabbat services and very
soon, and in-person in the not-to-distant future. Be well and stay safe.
Kehillah MAGNET Message
Joel Yoffee
Hello Temple Adas Shalom Community,
Due to current COVID restrictions. Safe virtual learning will continue for the
remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. We are currently re-evaluating
situations for the 2021-2022 school year. A survey will be forthcoming to all
parents help the Kehillah MAGNET Religious school committee make the best
decision possible.
Kehillah MAGNET is in need of a teacher for the 2021-2022 school year for
Sunday grades Pre K/K/ Grade 1. NO teaching experience necessary!
Here are some of the many perks that come with the job:
Work with some amazing students and fellow teachers educating our children
Lesson plans are pre-made, easy, and FUN!
A basic knowledge of Hebrew is preferred, but not required, to teach K and Grade1.
These are paid positions.
Sunday positions involve teaching Sundays from 9:00 am -12:00 pm.
If you and a friend would like to co-teach (each teaching half time), we can make that happen!
If you have any questions or would like to express an interest, please contact
Sarah O’Donnell at principal@templeadasshalom.org or contact Joel Yoffee at
joelyoffee@gmail.com.
Kehillah MAGNET still has student availability at all grade levels! If you have a
child or know of a family with children interested in learning more about their
Jewish heritage, Kehillah MAGNET might be the learning environment for
them. We would love the opportunity to discuss our Jewish educational
programs with all those interested. Please contact our Principal, Sarah
O’Donnell, at principal@templeadasshalom.org, for additional information.
As always, parents answering your questions and concerns about Temple Adas
Shalom's Kehillah MAGNET Religious School Program is very important to us,
and we would love the opportunity to talk directly with you. You always have a
voice!
Many Thanks,
Joel Yoffee
Charli Braccille
We are very excited about Charli’s upcoming Bat Mitzvah
service, which will take place on June 5, 2021. The service will
be held virtually, which is not what any of us had envisioned
pre- Covid, but we are confident it will be special nevertheless.
Preparing for a Bat Mitzvah via Zoom was a daunting task, particularly after spending all day
learning from home in the same manner. Still, Charli rose to the occasion, and we couldn’t be
more proud of how she persevered and met the challenges presented to her.
Charli is able to complete 7 th grade in person at Southampton Middle School, and I think it’s
safe to say that she has a newly found appreciation for being able to ride the school bus and see
classmates and teachers in person!
Charli has an older brother and two younger siblings, and she is a loving sister to all of them.
She also has a furry brother named Rocky, who she never forgets to share a nightly cheese stick.
Additionally, she is fortunate enough to have cousins who feel more like siblings, and together
they always keep things interesting.
Charli is passionate about social justice and is quick to speak up for those she feels need a voice.
She has a strong vision for the world she wants to live in, and we are excited to see how she
puts her beliefs into action over the coming years. Charli spends her time outside of school
playing lacrosse, soccer and taking hip-hop dance classes. Though moving forward, she will be
focusing on soccer year-round, as she recently earned a spot on a club soccer team.
Charli often participates in service projects in the area, and this year was no exception.
She and her friends made casseroles for a homeless shelter and spent an afternoon filling easter
egg baskets as part of a fundraiser for the Amanda Hichkad foundation. She also stepped up
during Covid and created an outdoor soccer clinic so that young kids who had their seasons
canceled still had a safe opportunity to participate in the sport that they love.
Her service project for the temple will take place when it is open to congregants. She has
expressed interest in volunteering to work the Purim Carnival.
Charli started her religious education at Temple Adas Shalom in Kindergarten. We are very
thankful for her dedicated teachers, Rabbi Gila Ruskin and Rabbi John Franken. We are also
extremely grateful that Mark Wolkow agreed to be Charli’s Bat Mitzvah tutor. Without his
guidance and patience, none of this would have felt manageable. Lastly, a big thank you to
Charli’s peer tutor, Eliana Joslin. We have always been grateful that Charli has such an
incredible role model, and it was so special having Eliana play such an important part in
Charli’s Bat Mitzvah preparations.
Warmly,
Meredith & Jason Evans and Jim & Andrea Braccille
Sisterhood News
Pat Wolkow
Wrapping it UP!
We held our annual Sisterhood Shabbat service. Moving prayers, readings, and
songs lifted us through the morning. Thanks, Denise, Elise, Rabbi Franken, and
Pat, for a job well done!
The Sisterhood will host an End of Year Event, on Sunday, June 13 th at 10:00
am. (We have a rain date of June 27th.) Join us in a walking tour of Havre de Grace’s
“Lafayette Historic Trail.” The tour takes about 2 hours and covers about 3
miles of leisurely walking. This event has been opened up to our whole
Congregation and registration, including a count in your party, is required
by June 4th. The event is free!
Check-in that day at our table, on 450 Pennington Avenue, in front of the
Visitor’s Center. Pick up your bottled water, gift totes, and a guide map of the
trail. You may also wish to download a free APP for an audio tour. The app is
called DISTRX. It is useful in tons of places you may visit in the future!
Why not come early for a local breakfast or stay later for lunch! See you then!
2021-22
Our Sisterhood Board will begin planning for next year’s calendar on July 13 th . If
you have suggestions, please let us know through email at
events.
We want to thank Courtney for all her assistance with designing and
promoting our events through media available and Rabbi Franken when asked
to spend some time with us.
A Word from the V.P. of Membership
Stephen Marksamer
The Membership Committee of Temple Adas Shalom is back!!!! Engagement is
the theme for growing our membership and building our community inside the
congregation and outside where we live.
The Membership Committee is a team, core sustained by our Fundraising,
Caring, Social Action/Tikkun Olam, and Social Committee leaders, and
expanded by additional members of the congregation who want to participate
in developing our sense of congregational community.
Working together, we seek to grow our membership, increase social awareness,
continue our caring outreach towards recognizing all the good things that
happen, understanding when difficulties occur. Help/support is sometimes
needed, and being there during grief when support sometimes is just being
there. Our Social Committee is planning lots of fun events where we can get
outside, be active, have fun, and especially meet each other, again or for the first
time.
There is a Value Proposition of membership to Temple Adas Shalom. The value
is being a community that does things together. Be it Adult Education
opportunities; Religious School for the children and young adults; Our ELC for
smaller ones; Being involved in local community action and charities; Socially
engaged with fun events; and our sacred commitment to Judaism, the religious
bond and history that interweaves us.
Look for the opportunities in the monthly Newsletter to participate and our
weekly bulletins and special emails. The more you do, the more we all grow
together.
If you want to be more active in growing our congregation or participating in
any of these committees I mentioned, please send an email
to membership@templeadsshalom.org. Thank you all for your great comments and
support. Keep them coming!
Sincerely,
Stephen Marksamer
