It was super cute! Each activity had agreater theme in mind such as: healthy body image,hygiene, self-love, and mindfulness. We created visionboards to help us vocalize why we’re individually specialand held a career panel with several Junior LeagueVolunteers. Watch out world, based on the careerquestions, there’s a lot of future techies! We ended 2021with special COVID-compliant mini cake bites baked byour own Junior League star-baker and President Elect,Bria Day of Disheveled Diva. We were really proud ofhow much interaction we could facilitate despite beingvirtual.What was also equally important was the amount of other support we were able toprovide the clubs. During the Volunteer-A-Thon several Thanksgiving bags werepacked to provide a full Thanksgiving meal. The Clubs reported that the parents hadso much gratitude for the food during what has been a very difficult year. During theVolunteer-A-Thon, Kelly Iuliano and Ashley DePasquale also organized a coat drive.Again because of COVID-19 this proved more difficult as we had to dry clean each ofthe coats before dropping them off at the Clubs. The girls were so excited when theysaw their new trendy coats for the winter, quickly trying them on in the mirror. Wecouldn’t be there, but we got some cute photos!As 2021 ended, we heard rumors from Club directors that some kids expressed thatthey were not going to be celebrating the holidays this year due to parents losing theirjobs and income. We couldn’t stand by to hear this happen so the Junior Leaguequickly rushed to a grassroots fundraiser, raising over $5,800 in Walmart gift cardsfor the parents. Special thanks to Whitney Sweeney who went to multiple Walmartstores to obtain the physical gift cards, not an easy feat during the holiday rush amidsta global pandemic. We also asked for wish lists for thirteen Club members who weknew were not going to receive presents during the holidays. Each of those kids gotexactly what they asked for. What was humbling is a lot of the requests were not forelectronics or games, but rather for books, warm socks, and clothing. We were sohappy to see the videos of those children opening their gifts, receiving exactly whatthey asked for. The Southwest Club Director, Sophie, texted us Christmas morning tosay: “Thanks to the JL, families are waking up enjoying their gifts and havingbreakfast…thanks again for all that you do!”The true unsung heroes this year are the Club directors, tirelessly trying to normalizelife for these kids while risking their own lives in the face of the pandemic. They areprimarily young and charismatic leaders, many of whom went through the programthemselves. We couldn’t let them go unnoticed, so we also provided them with Targetgift cards during the holiday season to thank them for their tireless hard work.Needless to say: there were tears of happiness.This project has really allowed the League to give back locally, especially during atime of great need. In November, the 5th annual Volunteer-a-thonCOAT DRIVEwas unlike any other! With the world in apandemic, creativity, community, and a strongsense of togetherness as a league were of theutmost importance. The Junior League ofHartford was able to pull off a successful eventshowing just what these women are made of.Coming together with a mix of in-person andvirtual volunteer events, we fulfilled ourcommitment of 26.2 continuous hours.BLOOD DRIVEDuring our 26.2 hours of Volunteering we:Made 40 blankets for Project Linus to helpcomfort children in local hospitalsCollected 53 units of blood donated to theAmerican Red CrossProvided 22 families with Thanksgiving mealbaskets, feeding 100 people from the Boys andGirls Clubs of HartfordCollected 100 coats for families of the Boys andGirls Clubs of HartfordDelivered donated furniture to 3 familiesthrough Journey HomeSorted hundred of pounds of food for FoodshareBGCH BASKETSWithout fundraising, we would not be able to dothe things we do in the Greater Hartfordcommunity. The Volunteer-a-thon raised fundsto help us to continue to provide our annualgrant to support the Smart Girls program forthe Boys and Girls Club of Hartford, as well asother programs. These programs need us nowmore than ever.
