Student Voice 2020
What we want you to know?
Continue to improve quality and access of facilities and venues
ol
I would like to see
more inclusive facilities
for trans, non-binary
and gender non-confirming
students to make us
feel more comfortable
and safe.
I would like to
play even when there
is no training so maybe
if they can open the
gym during lunchtime
or something then I
would be very satisfied.
A lot of the kids at school
want to play basketball
at lunchtime but we do not
have a court to play on.
So, unless you play rugby or
football, we can’t play the
sport we like.
Improve range of activities on offer
I would like to see more opportunities
for things that might not necessarily
be sports, but still physical activity
e.g., dance.
It would be great to have more
social teams available, because a lot of
the sports my friends and I want to join require
trials and are competitive.
Provide development opportunities or programmes
I think it would be quite cool if the
kids that don’t get in the best teams or
be the best at a certain sport could still
have an opportunity to improve their skills.
The kids that get in all of the top teams get
heaps of extra coaching and training, but
I think that if the less successful kids got
more opportunities to develop their skills the
overall school sport could be improved, and
some people could move up teams.
More opportunities to try out
the sport/physical activity before
doing it to make it less scary
when trying something new
and signing up.
I feel like some sports don’t
really have a programme for
beginners, but there’s only
teams for competitions.
Reduce costs to participate in physical activity
The cost of most sports is the main reason I don’t do
the sports. They are very expensive and although I have
a passion for sports, I can’t do most of them because
it’s just too expensive.
It’s too expensive my parents
can’t afford it, so I have to pick
and choose between sports.
Continue to ensure quality of teachers/coaches/officials
I find it unfair how top sports
teams get professional
coaches whereas the lower
teams such as 2nd through
to 4th teams get teachers,
parents or even year 13s. You
don’t learn as much and can’t
reach your full potential.
There are coaches for
the main sports like
netball, rugby, soccer
and touch. But sports
like volleyball is more a
self-coached sport and
not many opportunities
to get better.
They don’t understand
things we say and think
that you’re lying when
you’re hurt, ….or need time
to yourself. They care more
about what shorts you’re
wearing than your physical
and mental well-being!
