Since 1983, the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) has been at the forefront of Australia’s emerging jazz performers, conductors and composers. The 2021 season is no exception, bringing together traditional and contemporary jazz with an exciting roster of WAYJO alumni guest artist. Demonstrating the versatile possibilities of the big band format, this is a season of jazz with something for everyone, spanning traditional repertoire through to an upbeat dancing selection of Latin and World Jazz. WAYJO also present a generous serve of original, commissioned work from alumni Alana Macpherson and Kate Pass, plus premiere two new emerging composers at the Modern Masters show as part of the continuing Composer in Residence program (recipients announced end of May). WAYJO Wednesday Night Orchestra,
with special guest Jamie Oehlers
Did you know that big band music has continued to evolve and push
boundaries from the Golden Age of Swing?
Composers such as Bill Holman, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely and Maria
Schneider have used big band instrumentation to create some of the most
creative and exciting jazz in recent decades.
The Wednesday Night Orchestra will be joined by Perth’s very own modern
master on tenor saxophone, Dr Jamie Oehlers (WAYJO member 1987-93).
Jamie appears thanks to WAYJO’s 2021 Major Programs Partner, Minderoo Foundation
