The trailfeatured interpretive signageand a two-storey wildlifeobservation tower. The publicwas finally welcomed to visit.Nature ProjectsIn 2016 the HNC approachedthe Region for permissionto start working on theRegional lands with itswildlife enhancementprojects. The club was allowedto begin work in 2017.The next step was to dowhat naturalization could not.Most of the site had no naturalstructure for wildlife becauseit was formed in some ways bythe blade of a bulldozer. TheHNC started simply, puttingin rocks, logs, and brush piles,as well as Eastern Bluebirdand Tree Swallow boxes.Projects were designed to bevisible from the trail so thepublic could easily experiencethe wildlife attracted by them.When families enjoy natureclose to home it significantlyadds to their quality of life.Support from HNCmembers, local communityfoundations, privatebusinesses and individualsall provided the capitaland materials for theprojects. Successes are aresult of the partnershipsmade in the community.Killing PhragmitesSince 2006 invasivePhragmites grass began to takehold over much of the land.By 2016 it had to be dealt withbecause it covered three of thenew wetlands completely andringed the other three. It was asevere threat to the ecosystemhere. In 2017 a controlplan for Phragmites wasdeveloped with the assistanceof experienced experts andspecialists in invasive speciesremoval and control.Fortunately, with thegenerosity of the Lois EvansNatural Heritage Fund ofthe Hamilton CommunityFoundation, funds werereceived to carry out the plan.The Phragmites were sprayed20 Niagara Escarpment Views • spring 2021
