who is all about speed.Self-described “veteranendurance athlete” JohnHarrison Pockler hadno races in 2020 due toCOVID-19 and was lookingfor a challenge and a way tokeep training. Pockler brokethe record for the fastestend-to-end, finishing hisin September 2020 in ninedays, 17 hours, two minutesand 25 seconds. The ventureinvolved two and half monthsof planning, a base crew of sixsupport people, and an RV.More typically, hikers willtake about two years. That’sthe plan for runner CinJohnston, whose first end-toendis part of her bucket list.Once Cin retired in 2017,she decided to hike the entiretrail, sparked by takingpart in a 30K “Survival Run”through parts of the Iroquoiasection. Cin and her husbandhad become good friendswith Calvin Snow and hiswife through a running clubin Milton. Calvin, too, hadrecently retired and wantedanother adventure. Withboth spouses still working,he and Cin joined forces thatfall and started in Niagara.After a delay due to kneesurgery, Calvin still has theBruce Peninsula to cover. Theplan is to finish in spring2021, with their spousesjoining in for the final leg.Once is Not EnoughAs for the most end-to-ends,the record is 50 times, setby Doug Sloan, a lifetimemember since about 1995.He started hiking seriouslyin 1990 and was smitten,completing his first end-toendthree years later at age 52.“Hiking has a qualityakin to meditation, amongother things,” Sloan explains.“You can devote one partof your mind to the actualhiking whilst pondering theCOVID-19 CAUSES CHANGEThe pandemic forced serious changes to BTC’s hiking program in the earlymonths of 2020 and beyond, including support for end-to-ends.In March and April, CEO Michael McDonald urged people to stay home, staysafe and stay away from the Bruce Trail. BTC cancelled organized hikes andin-person events in March, as well as the Trail Angels transportationprogram that supported end-to-ends. Many partner organizations suchas conservation areas closed or limited access to parking and trails.By mid-May, BTC coordinated trail re-openings with its partners,urging hikers to keep two metres away from others, move asideto allow others to pass and stick to local areas. Most of theBruce Trail was open by early September, and BTC updatedguidelines in November to limit group hikes to 10, suggestmasks and advise checking for closures. At this writing,organized hikes through local clubs remained suspended.This stone cairn marks the southern end of the Bruce Trail in Queenston Heights.
