View From the Editor’s Desk nWhat COVID-19 Has TaughtComing out of a COVIDwinter, we can beforgiven for beingweary. Even for thoseof us who have it good andhave remained well, there’s atoll on us from the relentlessnews of case numbers, deaths,vaccines given, vaccinesdelayed, constant remindersto wear masks, keep socialdistance, wash hands, stayhome as much as possible.When will this end?Whenever I’ve feltparticularly low by thesameness of every day, it’salways helped me to takestock, appreciate what I have,count my blessings. The worseI feel, which is often as thesun sets, the smaller my focusneeds to be. I am grateful forhaving the basic necessities oflife. First, and no small thingduring this terrible pandemic,I can breathe. It’s hard to thinkthat breathing would seema luxury, but you only needto imagine having it difficultto do, in order to know howsweet it is to be able to.I have safe and cozyshelter. I have a roof overmy head, walls to keep outthe wind, a furnace andwoodstove to keep me warm.I have electricity and hotand cold running water! Ihave food and beverages. Ihave a comfy bed, a comfyarmchair, soft blankets, TVand books. I can get outsidefor walks. You get the idea.Let us know what you think!Counting my blessingsand imagining their absence,puts things in perspectivefor me. Things could be somuch worse. For many peoplein other places around theworld, who don’t have thesebasics of life, things aremiserable. I’m OK. I havenothing to worry about today.This Spring issue is the firstof 2021, a year that we hopeand expect will end muchbetter than 2020. With warmweather approaching, peoplewill be more eager than ever,to get out again. To give yousome ideas to consider, we’recelebrating some outdooractivities in areas acrossthe Escarpment. Providedlocal lockdowns are lifted,you might want to try someof these. If lockdowns arepresent, at least you can get ataste of them in these pages.In This IssueEscaping COVID-19 bytackling the entire BruceTrail in what hikers call anend-to-end is our coverstory this time. Writer SueHorner has herself beenexploring the trail, and sheshares the accomplishmentsof hikers who have dedicatedthemselves to finishing thecomplete trail from QueenstonHeights to Tobermory. Despite orperhaps because of thepandemic, volunteer gardenersand helpers regularly gavetheir time to maintain andeven improve the garden forthe benefit of the public.In Niagara Region,between the Escarpment andLake Ontario, accomplishednaturalist Bruce Mackenziehas fulfilled a dream topreserve lakeshore wetlands inGrimsby. Migrating waterbirdsdepend on these habitats,which are open to the publicfor bird watching and natureappreciation. Bruce’s featurearticle shows us some of thewonders of these wetlands.Mike Davis, my copublisher,shares a favouritecycling route through wordsand photos of the CaledonTrailway. A multi-use trail,this serves walkers, horseriders as well as cyclists andother people using wheels,whether under chairs, strollersor skateboards. It is also partof The Great Trail whichreaches all across Canada.cautious steps toward doingmore of the things we enjoyoutside our homes. It will beso great to feel comfortableagain, visiting the townsalong the Escarpment.So many small businesseshave been suffering financiallyfrom the forced closures or ageneral decline in customertraffic. If we hold tight untilwe’re on top of this virus,we’ll get there again soon.We at the magazine owemore thanks again to our kindreaders who have surprised uswith gifts and donations. Wedon’t ask for them but theyare signs of the generosityand kindness of peoplewe have brought togetherthrough this magazine,those who, like us, live, workor play near the NiagaraEscarpment in Canada, orare among our hundredsof armchair travellers.
