What is a Chamber of Commerce? 

The first chamber of commerce ever created came about in 1599 in Marseille, France. 

Its purpose was to gather merchants, industrialists, traders, and craftsmen in order to 

discuss and tackle community challenges. The chamber of commerce was a place of 

unity, even among competitors. Their voice soon became a persuasive power amidst 

public authorities and the community. So much so that more would pop up throughout 

the centuries, and even throughout the world. 

Here at the Chandler Chamber we tackle both issues and trends taking place in our 

community as well as offer resources and services to help local businesses succeed. It 

isn’t just a goodwill effort, but an effective strategy.

What Does a Chamber of Commerce Do? 

Chamber of Commerce organizations are not out-of-the-box, cookie-cutter setups. 

Every chamber is unique, with different benefits, resources, and opportunities. The 

Chandler Chamber has become a recognized source for business throughout the State 

of Arizona. As the third largest Chamber in the state and growing. 

Our end goal is to serve as an influential voice and power that stands for the 

wellbeing of the local business environment. This includes helping to promote local 

businesses and improve their growth. 

From regular networking and volunteer events to promotion and marketing packages,

Chamber Staff Wins 

National Award 

Congratulations to Chandler Chamber Director of Business Development 

& Member Services, Barbara Caravella, for being awarded the Association 

of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), top sales professional for 

achieving extraordinary success over the past year, particularly given the 

challenges faced through the pandemic. “Barbara is on the front lines, 

telling the Chandler Chamber’s story and showcasing the impact that our 

organization has on the Chandler Community,” said Chandler Chamber 

President/CEO Terri Kimble. Barbara was named number two in the 

nation for Business Development in the ACCE Circle of Champions. Well 

Done Barbara!

The Board of Directors is the 

elected policy-making body of 

the Chamber whose members

professional leadership of the 

community. 

The Board of Directors is 

responsible for approving 

the annual Business Plan and 

supporting budget, receiving 

and acting on committee reports 

and recommendations, and for 

directing the general activities 

of the organization. It is further 

responsible for assuring that policy 

determinations, once made, are 

acted upon. The Board is also 

responsible for approving the 

appointment of all committee, 

council, and task force chairs.

Molly Magill joins the 

Chandler Chamber of 

Commerce as the new 

Marketing & Events 

Operations Manager and 

brings a diverse knowledge of 

the industry. She completed 

her undergrad at Arizona State and received her 

MBA through Tiffin University. Molly’s experience 

varies from producing large scale events for theme 

parks and professional sports teams to marketing 

non-profit programs across the United States. 

Originally from southern California, she is excited 

to be back in Arizona and joining the unique, 

vibrant Chandler community. While not at work, 

Molly can be found hiking, reading, and spending 

quality time with her family and friends. 

Kassidy Sanders 

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS AND 

PROGRAMS MANAGER 

The Chandler Chamber is 

pleased to welcome Kassidy 

Sanders to the team as 

Government Relations and 

Programs Manager. She was a 

public policy intern with the 

Chamber in 2018, where she 

assisted in the creation of the 2019 How We Stand 

document and candidate endorsements. She will be 

working with the Chamber’s Public Policy, Education 

and Workforce, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion 

committees. Kassidy is a graduate of NAU, where 

she received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and 

political science and a minor in women’s and gender 

studies. During her time at NAU, Kassidy worked with 

the City of Flagstaff communications office and the 

Coconino County public affairs office. Kassidy is an 

Arizona native, born and raised in Mesa.

Chamber Continues to Encourage 

Non-Discrimination Ordinance 

In May of 2021, the Chandler Chamber’s Board of 

Directors voted unanimously to send a letter urging 

the Chandler City Council to pass an LGBTQ-inclusive 

non-discrimination ordinance in our City. Since then, 

the Chandler Chamber has been front-and-center 

in the community as an advocate for diversity and 

inclusivity. 

As of March of 2021, Chandler is the largest city 

in Arizona without such an ordinance, putting our 

community at a competitive disadvantage as we 

compete globally for businesses who rely on a diverse 

workforce. 

For the Chandler Chamber, which represents the 

interests of more than 170,000 people employed 

by the businesses operating in Chandler, instituting 

a non-discrimination ordinance is essential to the

continued vitality and competitiveness of our City 

within the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. A commitment 

to inclusion is often among the most important

the City is focused on 

rebuilding, returning to 

normalcy and providing 

residents and businesses 

with the resources to thrive. 

Chandler’s commitment to 

strong financial policies, 

maintaining healthy reserves 

and conservative forecasting 

kept Chandler in a good 

financial position throughout 

the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Chandler continues to be 

one of the few communities 

across the United States to 

be awarded an 

AAA General 

Obligation bond 

rating with all 

three bond 

rating agencies, 

allowing the City 

to obtain the 

most favorable 

interest rates on 

bonded debt. 

Due to a 

significant 

reduction in 

the prior fiscal 

year’s budget to 

mitigate potential 

COVID-19 impacts, 

the budget will 

increase 13.6 percent, totaling 

$1.06 billion. Major factors 

contributing to the increase 

are anticipated American 

Rescue Plan Act grant funding, 

additional infrastructure 

and capital improvement 

projects and nine net new 

General Funded positions 

to help deliver outstanding 

services. This budget allows 

for flexibility to address 

grant funded projects should 

additional funding be made 

available. 

This budget will continue 

to paydown the Public Safety 

Personnel Retirement System 

unfunded liability with a 

programmed additional onetime 

payment of $22 million 

and additional commitments 

in the one-time forecast. New 

positions and replacement of 

safety and communication 

equipment for our public 

safety departments will 

enhance their ability to 

serve and respond to the

Graying 

Workforce

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the percentage of 

the U.S. labor force aged 55 and over almost doubled in the last 

two decades from 12.4% in 1998 to 23.1% in 2018. 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also projects 

workers aged 65 and over will exceed other 

age groups over the 2014-2024 decade. This 

increase is primarily attributed to older 

Americans re-entering the workforce or

waiting longer to retire. 

They chose to postpone 

retirement to improve 

their finances, enhance 

personal fulfillment, and 

maintain their mental 

acuity. While these reasons 

are all valid for continuing 

employment, the aging 

workforce presents 

unique challenges to 

employers. They must 

determine creative ways 

and programs to respond 

to the aging workforce 

regarding labor costs, productivity, 

and organizational sustainability. More 

specifically, they must revisit their 

retirement policies, working conditions,

March 2022

The Chandler Chamber of 

Commerce has announced that 

the Chandler Chamber Ostrich 

Festival will take place two 

consecutive weekends, March 11-13 

and March 17-20, and will include 

a special St. Patrick’s Day themed 

celebration on Thursday, March 

17, 2022, at Tumbleweed Park in 

Chandler. 

Organized by the Chandler 

Chamber of Commerce and Steve 

LeVine Entertainment & Public 

Relations (SLE), the event is known 

as one of the premier festivals 

in the southwest and a longstanding 

community tradition. 

The Ostrich Festival is a familyfriendly 

festival featuring national 

and local entertainment, thrilling 

stage shows, over 50 exhilarating 

midway rides and games, classic 

festival food, and interactive 

activities for all ages. The festival 

also features meet and greets 

with your favorite characters, 

ostrich-themed educational 

activities, exciting attractions, 

upscale arts and crafts and much 

more. 

In addition, there are performances 

by several local community 

groups throughout the weekend 

followed by a nationally renowned 

headliner each night. Past headliners 

include: The Beach Boys, 

Andy Grammer, Flo Rida, The 

Commodores, Eddie Money, Kool 

& The Gang, Spin Doctors, John 

Michael Montgomery and many 

others.

weekends of Ostrich Festival 

family fun to our community so

working diligently with the City 

of Chandler and SLE to plan the 

safest event possible for what is 

expected to be the best Ostrich

The Ostrich Festival also

postponed due to the COVID-19

Operation Back to School is 

committed to providing K-12 

students in need with academic 

essentials to be successful 

throughout the upcoming 

school year! 

This is an annual city-wide effort to supply Chandler 

students with backpacks, school supplies, shoes, socks, 

underwear, haircuts, and more. By directly distributing 

fully loaded backpacks to students, the 

financial burden is removed for 

underserved families that would 

otherwise struggle to purchase 

all the needed supplies for their 

student’s first day back to school. 

This year’s distribution event will 

occur on Saturday, July 17, 2021 

from 8am – 10am.

Ensure that all of Chandler’s scholars have the school supplies needed to start the school 

year! A business or individual may get involved on many levels including sponsorship 

opportunities, hosting a drive at work, making a financial contribution, donating supplies

backpacks, deliver backpacks to the distribution sites and assist on event day, July 17th.

This month Chandler Unified School District opens a new campus for its 

sixth high school in Chandler -- Arizona College Preparatory (ACP). This 

new high school ensures that CUSD offers a wide range of choices for 

families who seek the best education and fit for their children. 

Arizona College Preparatory has quickly become one of the most 

consistently ranked best schools in the nation by U.S News & World 

Report and the Washington Post, as well as the state of Arizona. It has 

become a magnet for colleges seeking highly qualified students. 

The high school is moving from its previous location at a re-purposed 

elementary school, and while a new high school was not originally part 

of the plan, CUSD leadership altered course to accommodate its rapid 

growth and community requests. 

“We’ll continue our tradition of academic excellence, but this move 

gives us the ability to add some of the traditional high school facilities 

and activities students were asking for,” said Principal Rob Bickes. “That 

includes everything from athletics to art and theater. I can’t wait for the 

students to see it.” 

ACP is known for its academics, dedicated instruction, and personalized 

attention, creating an atmosphere of success in and outside of the 

classroom. As a publicly funded school, it is open to all high school 

students through open enrollment and students at all levels of academic 

achievement are welcome and encouraged to attend. The school is 

preparing students not only for college – but whatever course they 


choose to pursue after high school via on-level, honors, or AP courses. 

“Students can look forward to dedicated instruction from certified 

Highly Qualified Teachers who specialize in the subject area they teach. 

We are excited to kick off a great 2021-2022 school year at our new 

campus with our dedicated students and teachers,” said Bickes. “It truly is 

a community like no other.”

Manager for three.

Ralph moved to the desert in 

1971. Upon learning to drive,

career. In 2002 he married his sweetheart, Linda, and

joined the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, became 

an Ambassador in 2007, a Board member in 2013, 

and has chaired the Ostrich Festival for over 7 years.

Yanick Hicks grew up in a small west African country called 

Cameroon. As a teenager, he came to the U.S. He had a 

difficult time at first in the US because of his accent and not 

having any friends. The turning point came one day when a 

friend introduced him to an instructional audio, that helped 

him make positive changes in his life. Yanick cultivated an 

intense desire for personal development and successfully 

completed his doctoral studies in the profession of 

pharmacy in 2017. Today, he holds a Pharm.D from Marshall 

University in Huntington, West Virginia. He focuses now on 

hosting leadership and development trainings and events.

and her husband Eugene are retired transplants from 

Minnesota where they raised 3 children. Today they have 

3 grandchildren. Martha has volunteered for numerous 

non-profit activities over her years as an Arizona retiree. 

She has been active in the Chandler Chamber serving as 

an ambassador. Martha enjoys traveling and spending 

time with her grandchildren.

Arizona. He is married to his lovely partner in business 

as well, Tina Patterson. Together they have six boys, 

ranging in age from 18-31 and also are the proud owners 

of two dogs. They have been in Chandler for the last 

five years and are originally from California. They have 

been in business nearly three years, and members of 

the Chandler for two years. Chuck really enjoys being 

a member of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce 

and has met several great people. As a new Chamber 

Ambassador, he is very excited to be a part of such a 

great group and looks forward to being more involved in 

the Chamber going forward.

Leadership Institute Class 37 

completed another successful 

Issue Day in a hybrid format- with 

participants attending both inperson 

or virtually! June’s Issue 

Day highlighted Life & Leisure. 

The focus on this session was 

to familiarize the class with 

Chandler Recreational areas and 

entertainment while discovering 

leisure activities such as parks, 

recreation classes, museums, and 

other entertainment that Chandler 

has to offer. 

The class had the opportunity 

to discuss work-life balance and 

continue their Diversity, Equity, 

and Inclusion training with Tyler 

Conaway from PayPal. After this 

discussion, the class toured the 

beautiful Hilton Garden Inn 

Chandler Downtown. Later on, 

the class received a behind the 

scenes tour of Chandler Center 

for the Arts and was able to hear 

from Kim Moyers with the City of 

Chandler’s Cultural Development 

regarding what is going on in 

Chandler. Following this segment, 

the class took part in an engaging 

leadership improve workshop led 

by ImrpovMania’s Dave Specht. 

The day concluded with a behind 

the scenes tour of SanTan Brewery 

& Distillery including the history of 

SanTan, leadership talk and social 

hour.
