Doing Our Part for Proper Recycling
Republic Services® has long been our trusted
recycling and waste services provider here in
Crestwood, and we like to think of ourselves
as a partner in their mission — and that you,
our residents and businesses, are part of that
partnership.
In that spirit, Republic Services would like to
remind you that putting improper items in your
recycling container impacts everything around it.
Items that could have been recycled are no longer
usable due to the contamination of the overall
container.
In our Village, as much as half of the recyclables
collected are contaminated. This forces recycling
companies like Republic Services to find alternative
solutions for the contaminated materials, and it
substantially increases costs for local recycling
programs.
We must work together as a Village to keep our
recycling program running efficiently and properly.
Currently the Village absorbs any additional costs
for service, but we humbly ask you to continue to
do your part as residents and businesses. We know
sometimes it’s hard to tell what can and should be
recycled. Please visit RepublicServices.com if you
have any uncertainties.
Thank you for sharing our commitment to recycling
and responsible environmental stewardship.
The Crestwood Police Department cordially asks residents to mark their calendars: The National Night Out will take place Tuesday, Aug. 3rd. The campaign
promotes police-community partnerships and builds neighborhood camaraderie to help make our Village as safe as it can be. Neighbors who might not
otherwise communicate get the chance to introduce themselves, and Crestwood residents get to know the police officers who patrol their streets, bringing
everyone together in a positive setting. The Village views this as especially important in the wake of the pandemic and the events of the past year.
More information will be available soon about this year’s activities, but rest assured that this year’s National Night Out will be, as always, a fun and enriching
experience for families and for everyone who lives in Crestwood.
Dear Neighbors,
July has arrived, and I think most of us would
agree that we’re in a much better place than we
were a year ago at about this time. I would like
to thank everyone who kept things running
smoothly at the Village, including our office
staff and first responders, the members of our
Crestwood EMA — see our story on them in the
pages of this edition of the Crestwood Adviser
— those in public works, in our schools and
businesses, and all our residents who did their
part to keep the pandemic from getting the upper
hand here in our village. It’s good to know that
in a crisis, our Village on the move can move
together to overcome it.
And in the wake of the past year, Crestwood
continues to grow. From the American Rescue
Plan Act Fund’s COVID relief package, we have
been granted $1 million to aid in our economic
recovery. We also have received another $1
million in state capital grant monies for the
development of a new fire house. Details on
the build and its positive impact on our Village
services will be announced at a later date.
While it’s still early, we would like to remind
everyone that Crestwood will once again be
offering its annual property tax rebate. The
application period for rebates will open Tuesday,
Sept. 7th. Checks will be issued in November,
as usual. We are always proud of our fiduciary
responsibility here in the Village, and we take
especially great pride in continually being able
to offer property tax rebates to our tax-paying
residents and businesses — a sign of Crestwood’s
ongoing prosperity.
I would like to remind everyone that you, your
friends and family are all invited to Ozinga Field
for our 7th annual Sparks in the Park celebration.
So bring a blanket, lawn chairs — we please ask
that they have rounded bottoms so that they
don’t damage the field — and picnic baskets to
the stadium Friday, July 2nd at 6:00pm. This
year’s movie, Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon,
will start at 7:00pm. Come on out and let’s enjoy!
Lastly, I would like to wish everyone here a happy
and safe Independence Day. Please remember,
with regard to fireworks, that most are illegal
in Illinois, and that they can cause profound
anxiety not only to our furry family members
who don’t understand the noise, but also to many
of our veterans who may be suffering with posttraumatic
stress disorder (PTSD). Please keep
them in mind before you light that fuse.
I look forward to seeing you out and about in the
Village!
Sincerely,
Mayor Lou Presta
Going Somewhere in Crestwood? Dial-A-Ride!
While we’re all trying
to stay in as much as
possible these days due
to COVID-19, those
needing to go out and
about in Crestwood
still can take advantage of the Pace Dial-A-Ride
system. The bus will take you anywhere within the
corporate limits of the Village of Crestwood. Ray,
the best bus driver in Crestwood, has been doing
an outstanding job for more than 10 years now. He
will make sure that you will receive the best service
possible.
The fee for a one-way trip is $2.25 for adults and
$1.00 for students. Senior citizens 65 years of age
and over can ride free at all times. The vehicle is
wheelchair accessible. You will be picked up at your
home, and if that is your return destination, you
Shredding Event Fundraiser to Return
to Police Dept. July 10th
It’s on. The date for this year’s Shredding Event
hosted by the Crestwood Police Department
has been set for Saturday, July 10th, from
9:00am-12:00pm or until the trucks are filled
to capacity. The shredding will take place at the
Crestwood Police Department, 13840 S. Cicero
Ave. There is no easier way to protect yourself
from identity theft while simultaneously
helping us to raise money for Special Olympics
Illinois.
All are welcome to bring their personal and
business documents for shredding. This
includes old tax returns, business records,
bank statements, cancelled checks, credit
card statements, bills, receipts, and any other
documents. Unlike other shredding events,
there is no limit on the amount of shredding
you bring, and you do not have to be a
Crestwood resident.
Shredding will be done for $10 for the first box
and $5 for each additional box. All shredding
is done onsite, and you can watch as your
documents pass through the truck-mounted
shredder provided by Beaver Shredding.
Identity theft is the nation’s fastest growing
crime, according to FBI statistics. Nearly 9
million Americans have their identity stolen
each year. In fact, you or someone you know
may have experienced some form of identity
theft.
Identity theft occurs when someone uses your
personally identifying information — like your
name, Social Security number or credit card
number — without your permission, to commit
fraud or other crimes. Identity thieves may rent
an apartment, obtain a credit card, or establish
a telephone account in your name. You may
not find out about the theft until you review
your credit report or a credit card statement
and notice charges you didn’t make — or until
you’re contacted by a debt collector.
Parking
Crestwood Village ordinance prohibits parking
on any village street between 2:00am and
6:00am. The reason for this ordinance is so
police will be alerted to abandoned vehicles
or suspicious vehicles that require investigation.
This ordinance also ensures that all
streets throughout the Village will be open
to fire and rescue equipment in the event of
an overnight emergency. This is especially
necessary in areas where narrow streets can
block large fire trucks. We will continue to
enforce this ordinance. Thank you for your
cooperation with this ordinance. The initial
fine for this violation is $75.00. This is a
Village-wide ordinance. PLEASE BE SURE
THAT YOUR LATE NIGHT AND OVER-
NIGHT GUESTS ARE MADE AWARE OF
THIS AS WELL!

Who is Your Crestwood EMA?
The Crestwood Emergency Management
Agency (EMA) is trained to respond to a wide
range of emergencies and non-emergency
events, either assisting primary emergency
responders or operating independently in
times of natural and manmade disasters. This
dedicated group of professional members
exists to provide a properly equipped, trained
and ready unit to assist Crestwood residents
and the public safety agencies that serve them.
During the spring and summer months,
the unit will activate during severe weather
watches and warnings to serve as weather
spotters, providing notification of tornado
activity. Members of the unit are trained by
the National Weather Service as storm spotters
and deploy in marked vehicles to various areas
of Crestwood to monitor storm activity. In
addition, the unit provides the Village with an
extra set of eyes during the summer months,
and each emergency services vehicle is able to
talk via two-way radio directly to the Police
Department to report suspicious activity.
When requested by the Police Department,
the Emergency Management Agency is able
to assist in traffic control, scene security,
emergency scene lighting, first aid services,
clearing of storm damage from roadways,
manpower assistance, and numerous other
tasks. The performance of these types of duties
allows public safety agencies to free up their
personnel for other responses quicker.
The Crestwood EMA, through a variety
of mutual Aid Agreements, including
Suburban Mutual Assistance Response
Team (S.M.A.R.T.) and the State of Illinois
Emergency Management Agency will also
respond to other communities’ requests for
emergency and non-emergency assistance.
Thinking about becoming a
member? We offer:
• Emergency Services Training
• Severe Weather Monitoring
• Traffic Control
• Neighborhood Patrol
• Special Community Events
• Communications
• Emergency Scene Lighting
• Emergency Operations Center Support
• Emergency Preparedness Education
All members will be trained, issued uniforms
and an Identification badge, and will be
utilized for preparedness, response, recovery
and mitigation efforts.
our Village!
As the athletes of Special Olympics sat on the sidelines, unable to compete
because of COVID, the drivers of the Five-O and the police officers that raise
money every year to ensure that the athletes can practice and compete were
also left idling.
After losing an entire season to COVID, we are happy to announce that on
July 24th, the Crestwood Police Department will be returning to the Dirt Oval
at Route 66 Speedway for the 4th annual “Five-O at the Dirty O for Special
Olympics.”
The concept of this event is to have police officers from all over the state race
cars that represent their department’s patrol car paint and decal scheme to
raise money for Special Olympics Illinois. Each officer will be required to raise
money to participate. The pole position (lead car) will be the department who
raises the most amount of money.
In 2019, with 25 drivers in the race, the competition was fierce. However, with
several new towns joining the race this year, this race promises to be more
exciting than ever.
New to the race so far this year are Buffalo Grove, Bloomington and Flossmoor.
Other local departments returning are Midlothian, Oak Forest, Bridgeview and
many more.
This is a family event that starts out with a Public Safety Car Show, with all
types of police specialty vehicles such as S.W.A.T Trucks, Command Vans and
much more. On the racing agenda for the evening will be several rounds of
Team Demolition Derby and then the Five-O take to the track to see who the
fastest cop in town is. Be sure to come out for an evening of fun and cheer on
the Crestwood Cops as they compete to take the checkered flag.
We are now asking if you would be interested in sponsoring our department
in this event. In exchange for a donation toward Special Olympics, we will
display your business/company logo on one of our race car, as well as on other
event material. If you are interested in making a larger donation, contact us
about advertising space available on the car. All other donations are greatly
appreciated and will receive an honorable mention. All donations are tax
deductible. You can see more on this event at LETRFiveORacing.com or on the
Crestwood Police Department’s Facebook page.
You can make an online donation to our team at https://soill.donordrive.com/
Community Alert
The Crestwood Police Department is encouraging
citizens to be vigilant while patronizing local
businesses and to always be aware of one’s
surroundings. Crestwood, along with many
surrounding suburbs, recently has investigated crimes
against persons who were victimized while out of
their cars, even for a short time. As we are living in
a time that requires all citizens to be careful of their
surroundings and are asked to report any suspicious
activity to your local police department. Please be
vigilant and don’t give the bad people opportunities.
Please lock your vehicles at all times. This includes
while you are at the gas pump or just “running
in” somewhere. Never leave your vehicle running
unattended. Always secure or hide valuables that are
left in your vehicle. Don’t leave your purse unattended
while shopping with a cart. The harder you make it for
the bad people, the better chance that they will move
on and not victimize you.
This alert is merely a reminder that we all must be
careful, and we want to remind you that living and
shopping in Crestwood is still very safe, as it has been
for many years. Please be careful.
Respectfully,
We Watch, We Call!
Mayor Presta and the Board of Trustees have heard the requests of many to report crimes in our Village. Working
with our Police Department, a compiled snapshot of a month’s reporting will be shown here in the Adviser. Our
intent is to inform the public in order to protect and be vigilant in calling upon our Police. The Mayor urges all
to stay tuned in to your neighbors’ well-being and property. Call our police, report suspicious activity, be aware.
(911 or Dispatch non-Emergency 708-385-5131).
Each month we continue to remind
residents about all the scams that are
occurring. Please remember that if anyone
contacts you for any reason — overdue
taxes, warrant for your arrest, allegations
of illegal activity on your accounts — and
offers to allow you to settle the matter by
purchasing gift cards, IT IS A SCAM!
Do not give anyone on the phone your
personal or banking information. Do not
allow anyone over the phone or via email or
link to access your computer.
If you have any doubts at all, please contact
the police department for advice. Senior
Service Office Tom Dawson or any other
police officer will be able to assist you in
determining if it is a scam. Our officers
are here 24 hours a day and would rather
respond to assist you in preventing a scam
then to have to take a report where you
have been scammed out of thousands of
dollars.
Police Warn of Recent Scams
Residents have recently reported that they have been in contact with asphalt
contracting scammers. This type of scam is also referred to as a Gypsy Scam,
in that these individuals will hit a specific area or neighborhood and once they
have worn out their efforts, they pick up and move to the next town or state.
This group of people approach a home and smooth talk the homeowner into
allowing them to reseal their asphalt driveway. These people are very persuasive
and typically target the elderly population. Their sales pitch can include telling
the homeowner that they will give them a ‘cut rate price’ just for today; or they
were working in the area and saw that your driveway needs resealing. This group
usually uses cut-rate products and also asks for payment before they begin in the
way of cash or a check made out to cash.
Here are some other things to consider:
• If you did not personally call a seal coating contractor, do not hire one that
comes to your door.
• Always sign a contract and do your homework to be sure the contractor is
reputable. Just because they may have appropriate work clothing, a truck
with a name on it, and sealcoating equipment does not make them reputable.
• If these people come to your door, do not engage in conversation, just shut
the door.
• If you have elderly relatives or neighbors, please take the time to school them
regarding this scam. The reason these individuals target the elderly is because
they can be easily persuaded into trusting them.
• If you see something, say something! Report any suspicious trucks or vehicles
in your neighborhood to your local police department.
The term “gypsy” as it pertains to gypsy scams in law enforcement refers to
people who travel in small groups across the country perpetrating crimes of fraud,
theft, and burglary. Gypsy scams are incidents that occur in daylight hours, in
which the suspect will walk right into someone’s home for the purpose of stealing
jewelry or money, often with the homeowner home or near the home.
They are typically non-violent in nature and usually run from the residence if
discovered. If discovered, they will often make up an excuse for why they are
there. The best way to prevent this type of theft is to lock your doors and install
security cameras. Popular gypsy scams include driveway seal coating scams, lawn
care and contractor fraud.
Gift Card Scams
Someone might ask you to pay for something by putting
money on a gift card, like a Google Play or iTunes card, and
then giving them the numbers on the back of the card. If
they ask you to do this, they’re trying to scam you. No real
business or government agency will ever insist you pay them
with a gift card. Anyone who demands to be paid with a gift
card is a scammer. Read on to learn more about gift card
scams.
What Gift Card Scams Looks Like
Gift cards are for gifts, not for payments. But they’re
popular with scammers because they’re easy for people to
find and buy, and they have fewer protections for buyers
compared to some other payment options. They’re more
like cash: Once you use the card, the money on it is gone.
Scammers like this.
1. If someone calls you and demands that you pay them
with gift cards, you can bet that a scammer is behind
that call. Once they have the gift card number and the
PIN, they have your money. Scammers may tell you
many stories to get you to pay them with gift cards, but
this is what usually happens:
2. The caller says it’s urgent. The scammer says you have
to pay right away or something terrible will happen. But
you don’t, and it won’t.
3. The caller usually tells you which gift card to buy. They
might say to put money on an eBay, Google Play, Target
or iTunes gift card. They might send you to a specific
store — often Walmart, Target, CVS or Walgreens.
Sometimes they say to buy cards at several stores, so
cashiers won’t get suspicious. And the caller might stay
on the phone with you while you go to the store and load
money onto the card. These are all signs of a scam.
4. The caller asks you for the gift card number and PIN.
The card number and PIN on the back of the card let the
scammer get the money you loaded onto the card. And
the scammer gets it right away.
How Scammers Convince You to Pay With Gift Cards
Scammers pretend to be someone they’re not to
convince you to pay with gift cards. They want to scare or
pressure you into acting quickly so that you don’t have
time to think or talk to someone you trust. Here’s a list of
common gift card scams and schemes:
• The caller says they’re from the government — maybe
the IRS or the Social Security Administration. They say
you have to pay taxes or a fine, but it’s a scam.
• Someone calls from tech support, maybe saying they’re
from Apple or Microsoft, saying there’s something
wrong with your computer. But it’s a lie.
• You meet someone special on a dating website, but
then he needs money and asks you to help him. This
romance scammer makes up any story to trick you
into sending him gift cards.
• The scammer pretends to be a friend or family member
in an emergency and asks you to send money right
away — but not tell anyone. This is a scam. If you’re
worried, hang up and call your friend or relative to check
that everything is all right.
• Someone says you’ve won a prize but first, you have
to pay fees or other charges with a gift card. Remember:
No honest business or agency will ever make you pay
with a gift card. But also — did you even enter that
sweepstakes?
• The caller says she’s from your power company, or
another utility company. She threatens to cut off
your service if you don’t pay immediately. But utility
companies don’t work that way. It’s a scam.
• You get a check from someone for way more than you
expected. They tell you to deposit the check, then give
them the difference on a gift card. But that check will be
fake and you’ll be out all that money.
find the contact information or the card issuer doesn’t want
to talk to you, report it to the FTC.
Safely Buying and Using Gift Cards
Remember that gift cards are for gifts, not for payments. So
if you buy gift cards to give away or donate:
• Stick to stores you know and trust. Avoid buying
from online auction sites because the cards may be fake
or stolen.
• Check it out before you buy it. Make sure the
protective stickers are on the card and that they do not
appear to have been tampered with. Also check that the
PIN number on the back isn’t showing. Get a different
card if you spot a problem.
• Keep your receipt. This or the card’s ID number will
help you file a report if you lose the gift card.
Report Fraud
If someone asks you to pay them with gift cards:
Report it to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.
ftc.gov. Report it even if you didn’t pay. Your report helps
law enforcement to stop scams.
You can also report it to your state attorney general.
If you lost money, also report it to local law enforcement. A
police report may help when you deal with the card issuer.

Lawn Watering: Make It Count
When should you be watering your lawn — in the
evening or daytime? There are some uncertainties
about the best practices and recognize there is a lot
of misunderstanding. In order to clear things up,
we’ll take a look at five common myths about lawn
watering to give you some helpful tips on what’s best.
These are important, as proper watering is the one
lawn care task that will impact your lawn more than
any other.
Misconception #1: I Don’t Have to Water My
Lawn
One of the most common misconceptions is the
misbelief that there is no reason to water it on your
own. A lot of people think that rain will naturally
provide a lawn with what it needs. But what about a
dry spell? While your lawn can survive a couple weeks
of drought, it will eventually thin the turf and create
an ideal environment for weeds to invade. If you want
a healthy lawn, you definitely will need to water it
from time to time.
Misconception #2: How Much I Water My Lawn
Is Based on the Season
While a lot of people believe that the watering needs
of the lawn are set by the season, the truth is, it has
nothing to do with the season and everything to do
with how much moisture is present in the soil. You
might be wondering, “When do I start watering my
lawn in the spring?” The answer is that it all depends
on how much rainfall is present. You could have a dry
spring that requires you to ramp up your watering.
The hotter and windier it is, the more quickly your
lawn’s soil will dry out. If you’re wondering about
watering your lawn in the winter, there is no need.
Grass goes dormant in the winter and the cool
temperatures help keep soil from drying out. No
matter what the season, the answer is giving your
lawn what it needs to thrive.
Misconception #3: The Best Time to Water My
Lawn is After the Sun Sets
While a lot of people say it’s best to water at night,
the reverse actually is true. The ideal time to water
your lawn is just after the sun rises. At this time
of day, it’s still cool and the water won’t evaporate
quickly — but it still gives the grass blades plenty of
time to dry before the sun sets. Wet, dark conditions
create an ideal breeding ground for causing lawn
disease that can damage your turf, so watering the
lawn in the evening should be avoided. If you can’t
find the time to water your lawn in the early morning,
even with automated timers, then try to do it early
enough during the day to allow grass blades to dry by
nightfall. Mid-day watering won’t hurt your lawn, but
you may need to do it longer as you’ll lose moisture to
evaporation.
Misconception #4: Watering My Lawn by Hand is
the Best Method
Watering your lawn by hand can be deceiving. It
seems like you’re getting ample water everywhere,
but you actually may be causing it to pool in certain
areas or even run off. Oftentimes a lawn that is
watered solely by hand is not receiving as much as
you think. The best method to water your lawn is to
use sprinklers that mimic slow, soaking rain. Hand
watering works fine for very small patches of grass
where you’ve planted new grass seed, or for container
plants, but when it comes to your lawn as a whole,
stick to sprinklers for the best results.
Misconception #5: The Worst Thing I Can Do is
Under-Water my Lawn
Many have concerns about under-watering, but the
truth is that overwatering can be just as bad — maybe
even worse. When soil becomes oversaturated, it can
become waterlogged, and you actually can drown your
grass roots. An overwatered lawn is also more prone
to lawn diseases.
Lawns need approximately 1 to 2 inches of water
each week in order to stay healthy and green. The
best way for lawns to receive that water is through a
slow and soaking rain, either naturally or as a result
of your sprinklers. Just be careful not to assume that
a downpour has given you ample water. Stick a finger
down into the first few inches of soil and get a sense
of how moist it is.
Also consider putting a rain gauge outdoors to
measure rainfall. When you do need to water, place a
shallow can — empty tuna cans work well — halfway
between your sprinkler head and its furthest point
of spray. This will help you tell how much water your
lawn is receiving during your supplemental watering
sessions. You don’t need to be watering your lawn
every day, but instead just need to ensure that it’s
getting its weekly 1 to 2 inches of water with about
2-3 waterings per week.
Saving Money
and Energy in
Summertime
As summer temperatures continue to put our
grid to the test, ComEd wants residents to
be aware of the upgrades that it continually
makes on behalf of its customers, upgrading
substation equipment, installing new
transmission wires, poles and smart meters,
as well as inspecting circuits and equipment.
These investments are intended to enhance
reliability and serve as an asset to businesses
that value a modern, digital-based smart
grid, as well as helping to avoid millions of
customer interruptions.
Even with the improvements to the grid and
infrastructure, ComEd reminds customers
that higher temperatures can also lead to
higher energy bills, and advises you that you
can save energy and money this summer by
following a few simple tips:
Turn Off Your Lights: Turn off your lights
when you leave a room. Turning off just
one 60- watt incandescent bulb that would
otherwise burn eight hours a day can save
you up to $23 per year.
Add 10 Degrees: Turn your thermostat up
10 degrees higher during the summer when
you leave your home and before going to
sleep. You could save up to 15 percent a year
on cooling costs.
Close Your Blinds in the Summer: Cooling
your home in the summer takes a lot of
energy. You can help keep your home cool by
limiting the amount of sunlight that enters
by shutting the blinds during the day. If
you close your blinds when the sun is up to
prevent heat from entering your home, you
can lower your cooling bills this summer.
Use a Ceiling Fan: This summer, instead
of blasting the air conditioner (and blowing
your electric bills through the roof), use a
ceiling fan to keep cool. Using a ceiling fan
may allow you to raise the thermostat setting
about 4 degrees without impacting your
comfort.
Adjust Your Water Heater: Set the
temperature of your water heater to 120°F.
Every 10 degrees you reduce your hot water
temperature saves you, on average, 3-5
percent in energy costs.
About 1-2 inches of water each week is needed for your lawn to stay healthy and green.
You, Your Car and Your Smartphone …
Smartphones are so integrated into most of our
lives, it’s often hard not to grab your phone when
you get a notification. But by refraining and keeping
your hands on the wheel instead of reaching for
your phone, you might just save a life or several —
including your own.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) says that at any given moment more
than 600,000 people are on their phones while
driving, and it’s been proven that if you look away
from the road for just 5 seconds, it is equivalent to
driving the length of a football field blindfolded at
55mph. And in real life, as we know, the football
field is filled with other cars, other drivers, other
passengers, and a lot of opportunity for something
bad to happen if you take your eyes off the road,
even for just five seconds.
And even though we know it is illegal, and
completely unsafe, many admit they still do it
anyway. Almost 71 percent of Americans admit they
use their cell phones while driving.
The Village would like to remind you that texting
while driving in Illinois qualifies as a moving
violation. This also includes operating the GPS on
your phone, playing music, etc. In fact, Illinois State
Police say that if you get caught with your phone
in your hand, that’s a violation. Resist the urge
— don’t pick up — or pull over to a safe and legal
location before you do so.
St. Vincent de Paul Food
Pantry Helps Those in Need
The St. Vincent de Paul food pantry is open on Mondays and Thursdays from
10:00am-12:00pm and serves families in need. The pantry is located in the
parking lot of St. Christopher Church at 14641 S. Keeler Ave., Midlothian,
across from the ramp entrance of the church, to the rear of the rectory garages.
On each visit, families will receive a nonperishable food bag, bread, and frozen
meat in addition to individual-size cartons of milk when available during the
school year. Fresh produce is also distributed when available and varies by
product — apples, beans, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, mangoes, pineapples,
potatoes, squash, tomatoes, etc. Currently no one is allowed in the building —
we will hand the food out the door.
Families need to provide proof of residency (e.g. driver’s license) and complete
a one-page form identifying family members on their first visit for purposes of
having a count of the number of families/residents being helped. Residents of
Crestwood, Midlothian and Posen are currently eligible for a $20 gas card and a
$20 food voucher for Save-A-Lot, which is distributed quarterly.
Nonperishable food donations are accepted during pantry hours. For more
information, the pantry phone number is (708) 371-4621.
maintenance. Local properties are selected to
receive Beautification Awards because the owners/
businesses have either made substantial recent
improvements or have continued to maintain
an existing property in an aesthetically pleasing
condition, which serves to beautify the surrounding
neighborhood.
Nomination Process
If you would like to nominate your own home, a
neighbor's home, or a local business, please submit
a Beautification Award Nominee by sending an
email to: beautificationaward@crestwood.illinois.
gov. You may drop off your nomination to Village
Hall at 13800 Cicero Ave., Crestwood, if you like, as
well.
Please note that only nominations for front
yards or side yards (if a corner property)
are accepted. Backyards are not eligible for
awards. All nominations are due by Aug. 1st.
Please include in your nomination why you think
this property is deserving. If you have a picture of
the property, that would be great! Don’t forget to
include the address. If you are the homeowner and
can share some of the recent upgrades or changes
you have made, please do so.

When July 4th comes around, you well may wish to celebrate America’s
independence by displaying Old Glory in front of your home. But you want to
do it correctly. To make sure you do so, here’s a quick refresher — as outlined
in the U.S. Flag Code — explaining the do's and don’ts when it comes to the
flag.
• Never let the flag touch the ground. When hanging or displaying your
flag, the key is to not damage it — so don’t drop it or let it touch
anything beneath it.
• Never wear the flag as a costume. The U.S. Flag Code makes very clear
that no part of the flag should be worn as sportswear or as a costume, or
used to make drapery or bedding. For those who really want to show off
their patriotism, opt for a patch or a lapel flag pin worn near your heart.
• Never display the flag except from sunrise to sunset, unless it is lighted
at night. This means, according to the American Legion, that other
people should always be able to recognize the flag. If there’s bad weather,
you must take the flag down unless you have an all-weather flag.
• Never place the flag anywhere but at the peak of the staff, except when
the flag is at half-staff. When the flag is suspended over a sidewalk from
a rope extending from a house to a pole at the edge of the sidewalk, the
flag should be hoisted out, union first, from the building. (The union is
the blue field of stars.) When hanging the flag vertically, the union must
always be at the top.
• Never wad the flag, but rather fold it properly. The way you store your
flag is important. The American Legion says to fold it into a triangle,
similar to a three-corner hat, with the blue and stars showing.
• Never raise the flag slowly: It should be raised briskly, but lowered slowly
and ceremoniously.
• Never carry the flag flat or horizontally. It should always be carried aloft
and free.
• Never display the flag with the union down. Only in instances of
extreme danger to life or property should the flag be displayed that way,
as a distress signal.
Flying Old Glory for
the 4th — Properly
Road trips are a lot of fun, but a little thought for safety beforehand will ensure that
your trip is fun from start to finish. (Photo: Wikimedia/Nicholas A. Tonelli)
Safe Driving Tips for Summer
After a year of isolating and staying
inside, many are feeling the pull
of the open road and getting out
to do some traveling. While we’re
all for a good road trip, we also
encourage residents who are hitting
the highway to do so with some
forethought for safety. Before asking
your car to perform punishing feats
on the road, or asking your family
to join you on the adventure of a
lifetime, make sure your wheels are
up to it, and that you have what you
need to keep safe on the trip.
Check for Recalls
Owners may not always know that
their vehicle has been recalled and
needs to be repaired. NHTSA’s VIN
lookup tool lets you enter a Vehicle
Identification Number (VIN) to
quickly learn if a specific vehicle has
not been repaired as part of a safety
recall in the last 15 years. Check for
recalls on your vehicle by searching
now: NHTSA.gov/Recalls. And sign
up for email recall alerts at NHTSA.
gov/Alerts.
Get Your Car Serviced
Regular maintenance such as tuneups,
oil changes, battery checks, and
tire changes or rotations go a long
way toward preventing breakdowns.
If your vehicle has been serviced
according to the manufacturer’s
recommendations, it should be in
good condition to travel. If not — or
you don’t know the service history
of the vehicle you plan to drive —
schedule a preventive maintenance
checkup with your mechanic right
away.
Stock Your Vehicle
Even a well-maintained vehicle can
break down, so it’s advisable to put
together an emergency roadside kit
to carry with you. A cell phone tops
the list of suggested emergency kit
contents since it allows you to call
for help when and where you need
it. Suggested emergency roadside kit
contents include:
• Cell phone and charger
• First aid kit
• Flashlight
• Flares and a white flag
• Jumper cables
• Tire pressure gauge
• Jack (and ground mat) for
changing a tire
• Work gloves and a change of
clothes
• Basic repair tools and some duct
tape (for temporarily repairing a
hose leak)
• Water and paper towels for
cleaning up
• Nonperishable food, drinking
water, and medicines
• Extra windshield washer fluid
• Maps
• Emergency blankets, towels and
coats
Protect Yourself and Your Loved
Ones
Buckle Up. Every Trip. Every Time.
Ensure that everyone else in your
vehicle is buckled up in age- and
size-appropriate car seats, booster
seats or seat belts.
Protect the Children
• Remember that all children
under age 13 should always ride
properly buckled in the back
seat.
• Make sure car seats and booster
seats are properly installed
and that any children riding
with you are in the right
seat for their ages and sizes.
See child passenger safety
recommendations at www.
nhtsa.gov to find out how to
select the right car seat for your
child’s age and size. To learn
more and find a free car seat
inspection station near you,
please visit the Child Car Seat
Inspection Station Locator at
www.nhtsa.gov.
• Never leave your child
unattended in or around your
vehicle.
• Always remember to lock your
vehicle and to keep your keys
out of reach when exiting so
children do not play or get
trapped inside.
Stay Alert
Keep your gas tank close to full
whenever possible, and, on longer
trips, plan enough time to stop to
stretch, get something to eat, return
calls or text messages, and change
drivers or rest if you feel drowsy.
Avoid Risky Behaviors
You know the rules: Do not text or
drive distracted; obey posted speed
limits; and always drive sober. Both
alcohol and drugs, whether legal
or illicit, can cause impairment.
It is illegal to drive impaired by
any substance in all states — no
exceptions. Alcohol and drugs can
impair the skills critical for safe
and responsible driving such as
coordination, judgment, perception,
and reaction time.
Getting Back to Nature: Camping in the
Cook County Forest Preserves
After a year of isolating and staying inside, it’s no surprise that for many people,
camping offers the perfect antidote to all of that bunkering at home. If you’re
thinking about getting out for a few nights in the wilderness, you could do a
whole lot worse than putting your tent stakes down in the ground of the Cook
County Forest Preserves. Camp Bullfrog Lake (Willow Springs), Camp Dan Beard
(Northbrook), Camp Reinberg (Palatine), Camp Shabbona Woods (South Holland)
and Camp Sullivan (Oak Forest) each feature a distinct character, a different
selection of amenities and lodging. Some are set near a lake or river; others may
be near to a nature center, but whether you’re a seasoned outdoor adventurer or
bringing little ones for their first camping experience, the Forest Preserves have
you covered.
Sites vary in accommodation, and with the expected popularity of being outdoors
this summer, you’ll want to make sure you have your space reserved. For more
information on this tremendous resource and how you can plan your ideal
camping getaway, visit the Forest Preserves of Cook County website at fpdcc.com/
‘Crestwood Adviser’ Great Way to Reach Local Customers
The Village of Crestwood wants local business owners
to know that the Crestwood Adviser, in addition
to being a great way to stay in touch with what’s
happening in your community, is also one of the
most cost-effective ways to reach your local customer
base. By advertising in the Crestwood Adviser,
your ad reaches the entire Crestwood population,
and at a fraction of the cost of what a direct mail
piece would cost in postage alone. Better still, the
Crestwood Adviser is read and left for others to read,
which is more than we can say for most direct mail
advertisements, the overwhelming majority of which
end up going straight in the trash or recycling bin.
To inquire about advertising rates in the Crestwood
Adviser, please call (708) 293-1430 or email
info@crestwoodadviser.com.

Hello Residents,
We are very excited to be fully open and serving the
community.
The Crestwood Crush season is coming to a close
in early July. We will mark the end of the season
with our end-of-year picnic for all who participated
this year. After taking off the end of July, we will be
starting up fall ball for all ages from 4 to 14 years
old. Signups are ongoing at the CRWC, and the
league will begin August 23rd. See the Adviser for
our flier, or drop by the CRWC.
We will be continuing both our Monday and
Thursday Yoga classes throughout the summer. New
sessions begin July 19th and run through August
23rd. Check out our Facebook page at facebook.
com/crwc1 to see all of our exciting new programs.
Wednesday nights in July we will continue to host
drop-in pickle ball from 6:00-9:00pm at the CRWC.
All-inclusive members play for free. For all others
the drop-in fee is $5 per session. Players will be able
to rotate in on any of our four pickle ball courts.
We hosted our first NSA tournament over Father’s
Day weekend. The tournament drew in looking
softball teams looking to qualify for the NAS
nationals. We are also hosting women’s powder puff
14-inch softball on Mondays through August.
Swim lessons are currently full through July, but
the next session will begin August 3rd. Sessions
fill up quickly, so be sure to sign up as soon as they
open so that you don’t miss out.
The CRWC is currently hosting a kids’ summer
camp. Campers participate in a variety of local
activities, and will finish camp at the Windy City
Thunderbolts Splash Day. This is the first of many
camps we will offer. In September, we will offer an
after-school sports camp for ages 5 to 15 years old.
Expect camp info end of July/early August.
The CRWC is also excited to announce our firstever
all the wiffle-ball action. All proceeds for the event
July will be a busy month at Playfield Park.
Even though our local teams are off, we will be
hosting many youth travel organizations for both
During the month of July, we hope to launch
DANNY OGANOVICH STORY
My name is Daniel (Danny) Oganovich and this is my story.
I was diagnosed with Renal Failure Stage 2 as a Sophomore in high school. I was told that I
would not walk across the stage at graduation or continue to play hockey without a
transplant. The good Lord got me through, and I achieved both. After I graduated, my health
began to decline, and my kidney function numbers started to drop. I felt like I went from
Stage 2 to Stage 5 (End Stage Renal Failure) in a blink of an eye. I had a surgery in July to
have my dialysis catheter put in because my kidneys were no longer functioning. I am on
dialysis every night to filter my blood. A kidney transplant would give me my life back. I want
to be able to wake up in the morning and start my day instead of being hooked up to a
machine. It would also mean the little things, being able to take a bath or go swimming. I
look forward to when I can eat what I would like, without having to take binders. This is what
a kidney would do for me and so much more. If you would consider being my living donor,
