This is the Garden
this is the garden: colours come and go,
frail azures fluttering from night’s outer wing
strong silent greens silently lingering,
absolute lights like baths of golden snow.
This is the garden: pursed lips do blow
upon cool flutes within wide glooms,and sing
(of harps celestial to the quivering string)
invisible faces hauntingly and slow.
This is the garden. Time shall surely reap
and on Death’s blade lie many a flower curled,
in other lands where other songs be sung;
yet stand They here enraptured,as among
the slow deep trees perpetual of sleep
some silver-fingered fountain steals the world.

I have always been inspired by the seasons. The absence of Winter, the
awakened fresh growth of Spring, high Summer downiness and the
earth-muted palette of Autumn hues, a detritus that reveals the unexpected
beauty. It’s these nuances that inspire me, a chance to capture a moment that
I know will pass before another has its time of temporary prominence. This
work is an emotional response to my relationship with plants, being able to
represent the movement and individuality that makes them unique to me. A
poem by E. E. Cummings has been an inspiration, to capture the beauty of life
and death in the garden. The ‘flower curled’ as it fades is as pleasing to me as
when in full bloom.
My brother and I have been designing gardens for some time, it’s a job that
inspires us greatly but also provides us with a strong sense of appreciation for
the natural landscape. We have designed gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show
and our private work finds us both in the UK and abroad.
