Big ‘Happy Face’
welcomes customers
Bill Rock and his wife Kim opened the
Amisk C-Store in May of 2013. They knew
there was a need for this type of convenience
store in the area so they decided to
fill that need.
The store is open from 6 am to 7 pm
daily. They provide the community with
basic groceries, take out foods and lots of
candy. The large variety of sandwiches
and subs, along with salads and hot dogs
are all homemade in-store. They also sell
homemade baking.
They like to be part of the community
events and provide the subs for the sub
day at the local elementary school.
The store has nine part-time employees.
Bill Rock is also the go-to plumber for
the area with six employees working for
him in the service part of that. He also
sells a small amount of plumbing supplies
at the back of the store.

Castor Value Drug Mart
experiences evolution
The Castor Value Drug Mart, currently
run by Randy Kary, his wife
and daughter, has been around since
1917, providing quality service in a
number of areas.
The Kary’s purchased the business
from Mike Bain Jr. in 2008 and have
lived in Castor since 1991.
They currently have up to 11 full
time and part time staff as well as the
occasional summer student who
seeks mentorship or other
experience.
Two staff are pharmacists, both
with a history of living in the area.
“We’ve continued
the business
and remained
viable and
remained busy,”
said Kary.
Randy is the owner of the operation
but he has a strong background
in pharmacy education.
He graduated from the University
of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science
in Pharmacy. Once out of school, he
worked at the Castor Value Drug
Mart under the previous owners.
He is now the head pharmacist at
the Drug Mart as well as owner.
Randy’s wife, takes care of miscellaneous
jobs as co-owner, while his
daughter Nicole is the storefront
manager.

What used to be the standard
filling of prescriptions and customer
education has evolved into blister
pack units and safe injection spaces
for vaccines.
“We do all kinds of injections, vaccinations,
and that kind of stuff
including the flu vaccine,” said
Randy.

caters to the local lodge that houses
roughly 50 people by providing
upfront service to
those that require
more help.

medications for
them as well.
Fifty-six years of service
The fact that Coronation OK Tire
has been here 56 years is an achievement
Janet Zimmer is very proud of.
“Lorne was an entrepreneur. In
1964 we came with absolutely
nothing and built the business to
what it is today,” Zimmer said.
Over the years, business grew
steadily to warrant building a new
shop in 1977, where the business is
located today.
With Lorne’s passing in 2012
Janet continues to run the business
with the help of son Mark Zimmer
and long time employees Jim
Campion who has been with the
company for 54 years, Terry
Dawson for 40 years, Walter
Jaraway who has been with us now
for 18 years. New to the tire shop
this year are Grady Wilson and
Cory Collins.
The company continues to serve
the surrounding area with the need
of tires and oil changes, in the shop,
on the farm, from semi to car - they
look after them all as well as taking
after hour call outs.
“I have been pleased to have the
business and I am very proud of
Lorne for doing what he did in
taking the initial risk. His motto
was “You have to spend money to
make money,” Janet said.
“It’s been a wonderful experience.
The customers have been great and
the business has been good.”

A mobile recreational vehicle service specialist
has opened a home base in Stettler
Heartland Rv Medic, well known not
just here but across Alberta as an RV
repair and maintenance expert, has
opened a permanent shop in Stettler’s
business park.
Owner/operator Brian Braun stated
his current business is in its second
year but he enjoys over two decades of
experience in the RV service industry.
“I’m back doing what I enjoy doing,”
said Braun Sept. 30 in his new showroom.
He said he’s happy to hear that
the solid reputation for knowledge,
experience and service he built in previous
years was still well-known
around Alberta.
Braun stated Heartland RV Medic
has a fully-equipped mobile RV service
that can respond to customers virtually
across the province. “We can come
to you, or you can come to us,” said
Braun.
Mobile RV service is not only necessary
noted Braun, but allows him to
service a huge geographic area
stretching from southern Alberta to
the Saskatchewan border and west out
to Nordegg. Braun stated many RV

Lougheed has something to offer in all seasons
Incorporated in 1911, the Village was named
after the late Senator James Lougheed, grandfather
to former Premier Peter Lougheed.
“The Friendly Village”, with a population of
almost 300, located along Hwy 13 and on the
Canadian Pacific Railway, is an hour’s drive east
of Camrose, and two hours southeast of
Edmonton.
Lougheed’s trading area has a diversified economic
base, with traditional roots in both
agriculture and the oilfield industry, and has
promise for future growth and prosperity.
Lougheed is home to both commercial and
industrial business, providing products and services
to the community and area, including a
grocery store, banking, Diamond J Bakery, costume
rental, special events rental, machinery
dealerships, agri-retail business, and water well
drilling.
The Lougheed Seed Cleaning Plant has built a
new modernized facility, opening in 2017 and
greatly adding to the northern horizon of the
village.
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch in
Lougheed is named in remembrance of Victoria
Cross recipient, C.J. Kinross . Private Kinross’s
citation shows that “throughout the day he
showed marvelous coolness and courage,
fighting with the utmost aggressiveness against
heavy odds until he was seriously wounded.”
Private Kinross single-handedly knocked out a
machine gun crew.
The Legion Hall’s “Wall of Honour” proudly
displays the framed photos and biographies of
over 60 Veterans from the Lougheed area,
including Victoria Cross recipient C.J. Kinross,
immortalizing those who participated in the
World Wars. The Wall of Honour is a
unique and cherished statement to the
pride of this community and the honour
bestowed for our military residents.

in and enjoy the food and warm hospitality.
For residents and visitors alike, the Village
has something to offer in all seasons.
Spring, summer and fall, you will find two
campgrounds and picnic locations, trout
pond, model aircraft field, museum, four
regulation baseball diamonds, a walking
trail and an annual Agricultural Fair held
in August.
During the winter, the “hub of activity” is
at the Lougheed Field House with its
24-hour gym and a variety of ongoing activities
and indoor sports, as well as the curling
rink. Olympic champion, Kevin Martin
started his curling career in Lougheed
throwing rocks many nights after school.
Lougheed has a very active community life,
with ample opportunity to participate in the
Village’s many community service organizations
and social groups. Bingos, socials and other community
events are held in the community hall, as
well as the Seniors’ Centre and Lions’ Den.
The Community Society hosts an old-fashion
Christmas every year. On a Saturday before
Christmas, you can join the fun for a tree
decorating contest, old fashioned games,
exhibits, Mrs. Claus has a kitchen with
goodies and, of course, Santa Claus makes
an appearance to present the children with
goodies.
Within the last few years, Lougheed has
become home to the largest population of
‘Mexican Mennonites’ within the Flagstaff
region. To accommodate this population as
they deal with their new Canadian home,
the citizens of Lougheed have initiated
events and enterprises to ensure a smooth
transition to their new chosen home.

Wow! Three years in from our small start
of 3 staff. Stettler Building Supplies has
grown to a staff of 14.
We have gone from getting excited to
actually see someone walk through the
doors to lineups at the checkout counter.
We have gone from 1 person outside doing
the deliveries and loading customers to 1
full time truck driver and 5 more men
pulling orders and loading customer’s vehicles
besides doing a few other deliveries.
And we couldn’t have done it without our
dedicated staff!
We started as a small family business and
the “family” has grown to include a crew of
excellent workers.
We also could not have done it without the
support from the community! We owe our
heartfelt thanks to you all!
Especially this past year with all the
challenges with COVID. Thank you for
your patience when we just couldn’t get supplies
when you needed them. Thank you for
your understanding when the prices of plywood

three and a half years now at
