Reading the newspaper is a
greener choice than you think.
We in the newspaper industry are committed to reducing our impact on the environment.
We take our responsibility seriously, and our production processes are now more energy-efficient and
environmentally friendly.
We recognize the importance of preserving and protecting Canada’s forests, and we only use newsprint
from responsible producers that embrace five widely accepted sustainability principles in their forests
operations. For Canadians this means that the forest industry plants more trees than it takes and it has
successfully reduced gas emissions by 10 times what is required under Kyoto.
And then, of course, there are your efforts. You’ve helped make newspapers a recycling success story by
recycling over 80 per cent of all newsprint in Canada.
Big ‘Happy Face’
welcomes customers
Bill Rock and his wife Kim opened the
Amisk C-Store in May of 2013. They knew
there was a need for this type of convenience
store in the area so they decided to
fill that need.
The store is open from 6 am to 7 pm
daily. They provide the community with
basic groceries, take out foods and lots of
candy. The large variety of sandwiches
and subs, along with salads and hot dogs
are all homemade in-store. They also sell
homemade baking.
They like to be part of the community
events and provide the subs for the sub
day at the local elementary school.
The store has nine part-time employees.
Bill Rock is also the go-to plumber for
the area with six employees working for
him in the service part of that. He also
sells a small amount of plumbing supplies
at the back of the store.
The Amisk C-Store is located on
Highway 13 in Amisk, Ab., so if
you want good old-fashioned
friendly service and yummy
homemade food, drive on down
Castor Value Drug Mart
experiences evolution
The Castor Value Drug Mart, currently
run by Randy Kary, his wife
and daughter, has been around since
1917, providing quality service in a
number of areas.
The Kary’s purchased the business
from Mike Bain Jr. in 2008 and have
lived in Castor since 1991.
They currently have up to 11 full
time and part time staff as well as the
occasional summer student who
seeks mentorship or other
experience.
Two staff are pharmacists, both
with a history of living in the area.
“We’ve continued
the business
and remained
viable and
remained busy,”
said Kary.
Randy is the owner of the operation
but he has a strong background
in pharmacy education.
He graduated from the University
of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science
in Pharmacy. Once out of school, he
worked at the Castor Value Drug
Mart under the previous owners.
He is now the head pharmacist at
the Drug Mart as well as owner.
Randy’s wife, takes care of miscellaneous
jobs as co-owner, while his
daughter Nicole is the storefront
manager.
Since taking ownership, Randy
5106 50 Ave, Castor, AB • (403) 882-3055
has noticed a few changes surrounding
the business, all the better
to reflect the population he serves.
What used to be the standard
filling of prescriptions and customer
education has evolved into blister
pack units and safe injection spaces
for vaccines.
“We do all kinds of injections, vaccinations,
and that kind of stuff
including the flu vaccine,” said
Randy.
Castor Value Drug Mart also
caters to the local lodge that houses
roughly 50 people by providing
upfront service to
those that require
more help.
They supply
medications for
them as well.
Fifty-six years of service
The fact that Coronation OK Tire
has been here 56 years is an achievement
Janet Zimmer is very proud of.
“Lorne was an entrepreneur. In
1964 we came with absolutely
nothing and built the business to
what it is today,” Zimmer said.
Over the years, business grew
steadily to warrant building a new
shop in 1977, where the business is
located today.
With Lorne’s passing in 2012
Janet continues to run the business
with the help of son Mark Zimmer
and long time employees Jim
Campion who has been with the
company for 54 years, Terry
Dawson for 40 years, Walter
Jaraway who has been with us now
for 18 years. New to the tire shop
this year are Grady Wilson and
Cory Collins.
The company continues to serve
the surrounding area with the need
of tires and oil changes, in the shop,
on the farm, from semi to car - they
look after them all as well as taking
after hour call outs.
“I have been pleased to have the
business and I am very proud of
Lorne for doing what he did in
taking the initial risk. His motto
was “You have to spend money to
make money,” Janet said.
“It’s been a wonderful experience.
The customers have been great and
the business has been good.”
The company in turn, also supports
the community by sponsoring
the many different services and
events.
A mobile recreational vehicle service specialist
has opened a home base in Stettler
Heartland Rv Medic, well known not
just here but across Alberta as an RV
repair and maintenance expert, has
opened a permanent shop in Stettler’s
business park.
Owner/operator Brian Braun stated
his current business is in its second
year but he enjoys over two decades of
experience in the RV service industry.
“I’m back doing what I enjoy doing,”
said Braun Sept. 30 in his new showroom.
He said he’s happy to hear that
the solid reputation for knowledge,
experience and service he built in previous
years was still well-known
around Alberta.
Braun stated Heartland RV Medic
has a fully-equipped mobile RV service
that can respond to customers virtually
across the province. “We can come
to you, or you can come to us,” said
Braun.
Mobile RV service is not only necessary
noted Braun, but allows him to
service a huge geographic area
stretching from southern Alberta to
the Saskatchewan border and west out
to Nordegg. Braun stated many RV
owners appreciate to-your-door
hauling grain and gravel in
the Coronation area. Their
son Dennis and his sister
service, so their valuable investment
doesn’t have to be moved back and
forth for service.
A permanent full-service show was a
great addition to a business that is
booming. With a large indoor area and
substantial outdoor lot, there’s plenty of
room to work on RVs and provide customers
with the highest possible
service added Braun. Located right on
44 Ave. In Stettler’s business park, the
location is easily accessible and easy to
find with the big new Heartland RV
Medic sign on display.
Even better, coming in spring, 2021,
the new shop and showroom will allow
Heartland RV Medic to stock a full line
next summer’s camping season. From
the
company now.
They are based
used mostly for grain
Braun said he has a lot of great
ideas for showroom displays and stated
Heartland RV Medic will also offer
educational get-togethers for RV
owners to learn more about keeping
their valuable investment in tip-top
shape.
Heartland RV Medic reminds their
friends and customers to watch for a
with lots of specials before camping
season. Watch the ECA Review this
winter for more information.
Braun stated he wanted to thank customers
who helped Heartland RV
Medic with a recent COVID-19 charity
effort. Braun stated Heartland gave all
customers the COVID discount and
asked those who were not affected to
possibly use some of the savings to
make a donation to their local food
banks. “Business can also be about
Lougheed has something to offer in all seasons
Incorporated in 1911, the Village was named
after the late Senator James Lougheed, grandfather
to former Premier Peter Lougheed.
“The Friendly Village”, with a population of
almost 300, located along Hwy 13 and on the
Canadian Pacific Railway, is an hour’s drive east
of Camrose, and two hours southeast of
Edmonton.
Lougheed’s trading area has a diversified economic
base, with traditional roots in both
agriculture and the oilfield industry, and has
promise for future growth and prosperity.
Lougheed is home to both commercial and
industrial business, providing products and services
to the community and area, including a
grocery store, banking, Diamond J Bakery, costume
rental, special events rental, machinery
dealerships, agri-retail business, and water well
drilling.
The Lougheed Seed Cleaning Plant has built a
new modernized facility, opening in 2017 and
greatly adding to the northern horizon of the
village.
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch in
Lougheed is named in remembrance of Victoria
Cross recipient, C.J. Kinross . Private Kinross’s
citation shows that “throughout the day he
showed marvelous coolness and courage,
fighting with the utmost aggressiveness against
heavy odds until he was seriously wounded.”
Private Kinross single-handedly knocked out a
machine gun crew.
The Legion Hall’s “Wall of Honour” proudly
displays the framed photos and biographies of
over 60 Veterans from the Lougheed area,
including Victoria Cross recipient C.J. Kinross,
immortalizing those who participated in the
World Wars. The Wall of Honour is a
unique and cherished statement to the
pride of this community and the honour
bestowed for our military residents.
If you are in the area, make sure to stop
in and enjoy the food and warm hospitality.
For residents and visitors alike, the Village
has something to offer in all seasons.
Spring, summer and fall, you will find two
campgrounds and picnic locations, trout
pond, model aircraft field, museum, four
regulation baseball diamonds, a walking
trail and an annual Agricultural Fair held
in August.
During the winter, the “hub of activity” is
at the Lougheed Field House with its
24-hour gym and a variety of ongoing activities
and indoor sports, as well as the curling
rink. Olympic champion, Kevin Martin
started his curling career in Lougheed
throwing rocks many nights after school.
Lougheed has a very active community life,
with ample opportunity to participate in the
Village’s many community service organizations
and social groups. Bingos, socials and other community
events are held in the community hall, as
well as the Seniors’ Centre and Lions’ Den.
The Community Society hosts an old-fashion
Christmas every year. On a Saturday before
Christmas, you can join the fun for a tree
decorating contest, old fashioned games,
exhibits, Mrs. Claus has a kitchen with
goodies and, of course, Santa Claus makes
an appearance to present the children with
goodies.
Within the last few years, Lougheed has
become home to the largest population of
‘Mexican Mennonites’ within the Flagstaff
region. To accommodate this population as
they deal with their new Canadian home,
the citizens of Lougheed have initiated
events and enterprises to ensure a smooth
transition to their new chosen home.
Lougheed, “The Friendly Village”, has
room to grow, with both residential and
commercial lots available for development.
Solution to your hearing concerns
Two years ago Maxine started out
on a grand adventure moving out of
Calgary to Three Hills and opening
her first hearing aid office.
It’s been an incredible journey that
just keeps getting better with the
opening of her second office in
Hanna.
She is splitting her time between
the two offices with Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesdays in Three
Maxine began her career in
the pace of an ever growing city a bit
overwhelming and longed to slow
things done, which brought her to
Three Hills.
After numerous requests for her to
branch out and open another office in
Hanna, she was able to realize that
goal in June of this year.
Although the original opening date
was pushed back due to Covid, once
she was able to open she was
delighted by the response and warm
welcome she received by everyone in
the community.
industry’s needs firsthand.
Rural Internet has never been faster!
Many rural communities only have
access to slow and spotty internet
connections, leaving residents and
businesses feeling frustrated.
NETAGO provides fast and reliable
internet packages to keep you connected,
even in the most remote
locations.
Founders, Terry Duchcherer and
Jim Bietelspacher saw the need for a
better internet service option in
their rural communities. They too
felt the dissatisfaction with their
spotty and slow internet. Combined
with their previous experience in
communications engineering and
their desire to provide a better solution
for their community they built
NETAGO.
Since 2003 NETAGO has been
committed to their community. “We
believe that service should always
come first, from the setup and
installation to ongoing support, so
you have the best rural internet experience
possible,” explained Terry.
“
Just because you
live in a remote area, you
shouldn’t have to pay
more for internet.
Whether you are at work on the
farm or browsing at home, the team
at NETAGO believes that rural communities
should have access to fast,
reliable broadband connectivity,
regardless of where you live.
To meet the growing needs of their
customers NETAGO states that they
remain up to date on the latest fiber
and wireless solutions. By doing so
“
they are able to deliver greater scalability,
higher capacities and
enhanced coverage for their
customers.
A belief that drives NETAGO is
that just because you live in a remote
area, you shouldn’t have to pay more
for internet. NETAGO offers new
service packages for business and
residential customers at some of the
lowest prices, starting at $55 with
access to speeds of up to 100Mbps.
NETAGO currently provides fast
and reliable internet to over 2,500
households and 250 businesses in the
Special Areas, MD of Acadia,
Starland County and County of
Stettler.
To find the internet package that
fits your family’s or business’s needs
you can visit NETAGO’s website
“Family” has grown to an excellent crew
Wow! Three years in from our small start
of 3 staff. Stettler Building Supplies has
grown to a staff of 14.
We have gone from getting excited to
actually see someone walk through the
doors to lineups at the checkout counter.
We have gone from 1 person outside doing
the deliveries and loading customers to 1
full time truck driver and 5 more men
pulling orders and loading customer’s vehicles
besides doing a few other deliveries.
And we couldn’t have done it without our
dedicated staff!
We started as a small family business and
the “family” has grown to include a crew of
excellent workers.
We also could not have done it without the
support from the community! We owe our
heartfelt thanks to you all!
Especially this past year with all the
challenges with COVID. Thank you for
your patience when we just couldn’t get supplies
when you needed them. Thank you for
your understanding when the prices of plywood
and lumber went through the roof.
We are trying just as hard to keep the
prices as low as we can for you.
Also thank you for your patience when
we just couldn’t get everything
done in time. Whether it was a
delivery, a quote, or just a wait for
customer service, we are doing
our best and we are still the place
where “quality and service still
count”.
Friendly atmosphere at Stettler IDA Pharmacy
Stettler and area residents
dealing with health issues and in
need of prescriptions have a
caring, compassionate option
open to them: Stettler IDA
Pharmacy.
The drug store, open for about
three and a half years now at
4934 50th Street (Main Street) in
Stettler, is a warm, welcoming
place and that’s the goal owner/
operators Amer Sharaf, pharmacist,
and Wendy Bignell,
assistant pharmacist, have in
mind.
Bignell said the IDA has a full
front store with plenty of retail
options for customers but the
real goal at the pharmacy is compassionate
patient care. “We care
about our people,” said Bignell.
“That is what we do.”
Bignell said the newly renovated
pharmacy has the warm,
welcoming feel she knows clients
appreciate, which Sharaf agreed
with. “We try to make it a family
environment as much as possible,”
said the pharmacist.
Bignell stated she and Sharaf
enjoy answering questions and
sharing their extensive knowledge
about health and
prescriptions with their clients,
and they always have time to
spend with clients who want to
learn more about their options.
Sharaf stated he’s noticed
people are becoming more and
more aware of the knowledge
and expertise of their hometown
pharmacists.
Sharaf also pointed out
Stettler IDA Pharmacy can
Four great
reasons to advertise
IN YOUR LOCAL
NEWSPAPER
Want your business to get noticed?
Whether it’s to promote your services or
to recruit new employees, your local paper
can help! Here are four great reasons to
advertise in your community newspaper.
You’ll boost
the local economy
By advertising in your
community newspaper,
you’ll be supporting
the local economy. You’ll help
the papers’ reporters,
photographers, sales
consultants, inserters,
proofreaders, graphic
designers, copywriters
and other employees keep
their jobs. Moreover,
you’ll work with people
who understand
the local market.
More Bang
for your Buck
In these days of easy travel,
online shopping and
declining populations in east
central Alberta, your business
needs to broaden your reach.
Whether it is driving people
to your online presence or
your store front,
the ECA Review can circulate
your message over
a much larger area of
potential customers
(92+ communities) for as
little as 1¢ per household.
You’ll reach
your
target audience
By advertising in
your local paper, you’re
sure to reach your
customer base — those
who are from your town
and surrounding areas!
Your ad campaigns
will be highly targeted and
consequently,
very effective.
You’ll get
quality ads
Business owners rarely have
the time or skills
necessary to write
advertising copy, take
photos and otherwise
create professional-quality
ads. By working with your
local paper, you’ll benefit
from the expertise and
skills of its team members,
including graphic
designers, writers, editors
