The Potentate’s Message
Es Selamu Aleikum
Greetings Illustrious Sirs and Nobles.
Nobles, Ladies and Friends:
It’s hard to believe that the year is half over!! It’s been a very humbling experience
thus far. I thank all of the Nobles for their support and encouragement during this
venture. I also want to say thank you for those of you who have taken my suggestions
and attended another club/unit meeting or event. We are all one and we need to
continue to support each other - especially during these post-COVID times.
We had some very successful recent events at Rajah. The beginning of May was the
Potentate’s Ball at the Double Tree. It was a great evening of fun and fellowship. I feel
very blessed for all of those that were able to attend this special evening for Lady Janet
and me. We also had very successful Meat Bingo, Pote’s Golf Outing, and Cigar Night
Events. A special thank you to all of those that supported these fundraisers and also to
the golf outing chairman, Joel Franco for his hard work and dedication year after year.
We have many Clubs and Units summer picnics scheduled. Please try to attend and
celebrate with your fellow Nobles. Don’t forget about MASA in Virginia Beach! We
are anxious to return there this year with great weather and the parade. The Ladies Jewelry Raffle will
be held on October 16th. Please see any Divan or Aides’ Lady or call the office for tickets.
Lastly, please continue to be safe and healthy. We need each and every one of you, your ladies, and
family for us to be successful.

Well, we have had our third campout this season. Again, the
weather has not been kind to us. Rain or cold was the norm for
much of this year’s outings.
In August we will be travelling to Lancaster, PA. Hopefully,
Mother Nature will be kinder to us.
September will find us at Watkins Glen, New York. I look
forward to walking up the Glen. But more importantly, touring

The Dynamic Duo –
Alec & Kaleb for
Shriners Hospitals

They form a great team when appearing in one of their Love to the
Rescue television promotions for Shriners Hospitals. Although they
live in different countries and are four years apart in age, they share
similarities on how they came to work together in the very successful
Direct Response media campaign.
Alec Cabacungan, now 18, seen on the right in the picture, lives in
Chicago and is quite the active teenager. He has been receiving treatment
for Osteogenesis Imperfect (OI), at the Chicago Shriners Hospital since
2002. OI is a genetic bone disorder characterized by fragile bones that
can frequently and easily break. He has had over 60 bone fractures. But
thanks to the outstanding care and innovative treatment Alec receives
from Shriners Hospitals his muscles are strengthening and his bones are
breaking less often.
OI is something he has in common with Kaleb. They both suffer
from the disease.
Kaleb Torres, now 14, lives in Montreal, Canada and has been a
patient at the Shriners Hospital in Montreal since he was 7 days old. “He had fractures when he was born,” his mother said. “But it
wasn’t as stressful as it could have been because we knew that specialists were taking good care of him.”
Kaleb has broken his bones over 200 times, has undergone 11 surgeries, and faced challenges many of us could never imagine.
But that hasn’t let that stop him! Today, he is stronger than ever and is even learning to stand and walk on his own.
Alec became a spokesperson 2014 at age 12 when he came to the attention of a director for the advertising agency which
produces the Love to the Rescue commercials. “He is a special kid. He has a lifeforce in him that not a lot of people have,” said the
director. Alex has since become a popular television star, has been interviewed on numerous national news and talk shows, and has
captured the hearts of many with his adorable smile and charming personality.
Kaleb came to be a spokesperson after being chosen as a patient ambassador at the Shriners hospital in Montreal, Canada. It
soon became clear that this photogenic young boy with the bubbly personality had a talent for this sort of thing. Kaleb has since
appeared in international campaigns, promotional videos, public service announcements and fundraisers for Shriners Hospitals as
well as for other causes.
The 14-year-old Kaleb has become a frequent side kick with 18-year-old Alec. He was introduced in an ad with Alec featuring
a split screen phone call. Since then, the two have appeared together in several commercials. They make a great team to promote
the services of Shriners Hospitals. Since Alec and now Kaleb have started doing the commercials, donations have skyrocketed!
“I used to be known as just a kid in a wheelchair, and now I’m Alec on the commercials and that is special for me.” Alec said
in a talk show interview. “Shriner’s hospitals have given me a life where I can live without limitations.”
“Kaleb realizes how much he has
accomplished at such a young age, and
he’s proud of himself,” his mother said.
“He enjoys the satisfaction of knowing
that he’s helping other kids like him.”.
Together Alec and Kaleb have
contributed to the success of the Love
to the Rescue ad campaign and to the
recognition of the services provided by
Shriners Hospitals for Children.

LEBANON SHRINE CLUB
As we all sit around trying to figure out how to stay cool, we realize what a contrast this year is
compared to 2020. It is truly great to be back. The plans are being made for the great things Rajah Shrine
does every year. The Pote’s Picnic, the Sportsman Raffle and then, as a special attraction, this October, the
Shrine Circus. If other activities are any indication, we should have great attendance.
There has been a call from the committees for help at these important events and the response has been
great. I am hopeful that enthusiasm builds for these events as they get closer. As we all know, these events
are large, complex undertakings and hard work. It can be a burden or fun. It depends on you and your
attitude. Nobles are all about having fun, so enjoy yourself.
Dennis Royer Here at Lebanon County Shrine Club, we are lining up the Dutchman army to help out wherever
needed. Well, it is not a real army, but there are a couple of us anyway. A few new faces will come in handy.
Our club is dark until the fourth Monday in Sept. when you can again bring yourself and your Lady to Heisey’s at 6:30 for our
regular meeting. We are looking to end this “come back year” strong. See you at all the up-coming Rajah events.

The Legion of Honor held their Commander’s Ball at the Double Tree Hotel in Reading on June 5th. They had a good turnout
including Illustrious Sir Kraig Leiby and Lady Janet and several members of the Divan. Chief Rabban and Past Commander Joe

POTE’S GOLF
OUTING
This year’s event was held on June 4th at Rich
Maiden Golf Course.
17 foursomes were registered. The rain held off and
it turned out to be a great day of golf.
Later, at the awards dinner, it got even better.
Honeybrook Golf Club donated a gift certificate for
a foursome with carts. The certificate was raffled off
raising $600. The winning foursome of the day’s
tournament donated their winnings back to Rajah
bringing the total raised for Shriners Hospital to $800.
Congratulations to Joel Franco, his committee and
the Pote’s Aides for a successful event.

The Circus this year was postponed due to Covid19
Families in this area need to get out and enjoy family time after a hard year.
We are not having the regular Program Book with all of the advertising this year
because we will be having the 2022 Circus in March again next year.
We are asking for $100 Sponsorships for Gift Cards from WalMart
as prizes at the eight shows. We give 6 to 10 away at each show.
Normally we have the Bike Give Away however there seems to be a bike shortage
so we elected to go with listing as a Gift Card. In the past we had some bikes at the shows
that some children chose but most of them received a Gift Card since
it is difficult to match the size and sex of the child. They were able to use the
Gift Cards for a bike or anything else of their choice.

DIRECTOR’S STAFF
Well, it’s that time again when we can report news from the Director’s Staff monthly meetings. It’s
great to meet and plan out the rest of 2021 with some restrictions.
We would like to thank Chief Aide and our Treasurer Mic Frey for getting us the food concession for
Dance Pointe’s yearly recital held at the Shrine Complex Pavilion. It gave us the opportunity to get some
needed funds back into the treasury. Also, to the members who spent the day helping serve the food, thank
you for giving up your Saturday.
It has been a very lean year for our treasury with all the parade and fund raiser cancellations. The only
fund raisers we have scheduled are the jewelry
sales for the Pote’s Picnic and Ceremonial in
December.
The are no parades scheduled for us until the
fall, but there is one bright spot to announce, the
Directors Staff is partnering with the Noble Riders
and the Rajah Clowns for the “Evening in Margaritaville” event on
October 8.
Director Barry Reed is hard at work trying to keep the fire truck and
antique cars ready if any parade dates become available. The truck is
scheduled for a safety checkup before it goes into use.
Regarding the Pote’s Picnic, it would be appreciated if anyone
attending from the Director’s Staff could stop at the jewelry sale table and
relieve Noble Austin for his break. Just come to the jewelry tent and talk
to Mic Frey. Mic has been ordering replacement and exciting new items
for this year’s sale.
This could be our best jewelry fund raiser.

The Rajah Ladies, like all of us, have been sorely missing our Shrine activities and the camaraderie it
brings. Chef Alan’s, like many other restaurants, has decided to be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so
we have moved our luncheon date to the first Wednesday of the month. We are looking forward to our first
lunch together in way too long, on Wednesday, August 4. Hope to see you then.

RAJAH PAST POTENTATES LADIES LUNCHEON
The ladies, wives of Past Potentates, are active again after the lifting of Covid restrictions. They met on May 22nd, at Lincoln
House in Ephrata. Tess Shank said that this first
get together was a nice, relaxed affair. There was
much to talk about everyone’s experiences with
the pandemic and getting back to normal. The
group meets once a year and rotates the location
to different areas.

guests attended this first of what we hope will

ANGLERS
With much enthusiasm we have looked forward to a season of fun
and fellowship through our fishing trips. While that is still possible, a
dark cloud has dampened our excitement. We have lost a very active
angler with the passing of Nick Smith, who over the years has provided
us with many laughs and hysterical situations. Seems like every year
he was a strong contender for our prestigious “Ryan Award,” given to
the person who provided us with the most humorous or most “unique”
situation. We will miss you, Nick!!
In addition, two of our officers have been missing from our activities.
Richard Snell Our president Mike Artim has been dealing with several issues that
have kept him from carrying out some new ideas he hoped to introduce.
Hopefully, those issues can be resolved and he can actively participate again. Also, our secretary
John Pavilik has medical issues of his own that are just
about ended and he’s looking forward to coming back
to participate in fishing trips. Keep all three of them in

We have had one fishing trip so far to Glendale
Lake where cold temperatures kept us from the kind of catch we hoped for. We did,
however, entertain our potentate Kraig Leiby and past potentate Mike Zerbe with a fun
time. Rumor has it that the number of leaded jigs that our Illustrious potentate lost has
caused a lead shortage throughout the country.
Hopefully, we can get back to some degree of normalcy starting with our July meeting.
With the circus being held in October, we have plenty to do and above all we will need a
great deal of help to pull off our commitment to Rajah Shrine.
In a little more than a week we will venture to Sodus Bay for our second trip of the
year. Hopefully I’ll have a good report with plenty of fish.

Forks of the Delaware Tin Lizzies
The Summer is a relaxed time for everyone including the Tin Lizzies. Our pie baking will resume in
late August. Our main activity for the season is our Annual Clam Bake on July 10th at Bady’s Grove in
Wind Gap.
We had a great turnout with over 70 nobles and ladies attending including Ill. Sir Kraig Leiby and
Lady Janet. We had guests from three local lodges also. The weather cooperated with mild temperatures
providing a pleasant atmosphere in the pavilion. The afternoon activities encompassed a game of quoits,
’50s-’60s music by Dave LaBar, dancing, bingo with over 80 prizes, and delicious lobster, steak, and
chicken bakes. And of course, great fellowship.
Thanks to committee members Ron Barron, Ray Barron, Kay Ellis, Garrett Newhartz, and Wayne
Napoli for their work during the event. And thanks also to Sally Johnson for creating seven gift baskets
for door prizes, and to Diane Hahn, Joyce Marsh, and Shelia for baking deserts to round out the dinner.

We’re looking forward to participating in the parade at MASA in September and to our tradition parade season that includes
several parades in October and November.

The “Smoke ‘em if you got
‘em” Dinner
also known as Cigar Night on June 4 in the
Pavilion at the Rajah Complex
This year the event was hosted by the Shiners Club. It was
an evening of great cigars, food, fellowship and great music
served up by the Good ‘Ol Boys featuring the Potentate’s
brother Kevin Leiby. Toward the end of the evening Illustrious
Sir Kraig Leiby sang a few songs then Ron Rapp, PP, Dwyane
Miller and Les Werley joined in. Ill. Sir, Dwyane and Les are
also in the Chanters.
Tickets to the event came with a free Cigar. provided by
the Bethlehem Shrine Club. They were also selling their hand
rolled cigars. Profits from the sales at the end of the day went
back to Rajah. In fact, all the club’s cigar sales profit goes to
Rajah at the end of the year.

PROVOST GUARD
Yes, we were as disappointed as you were that we had to cancel the June 12th Provost Spaghetti dinner.
But, due to circumstances beyond our control, President Jon Schneider, in consultation with the committee,
felt it was best that we do not hold the dinner as scheduled. As many people did not feel comfortable
working the kitchen, tending tables, setting-up, etc., and of course, not knowing the response we would
receive from our patrons, it was decided that in the best interest of all concerned to cancel the dinner and
put our collective efforts into having a super All-You-Care-To-Eat Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, October
9th, 2021.
We do promise the best, yes, the VERY BEST dinner that we could possibly have on that date! Pasta,
meatballs, sauce, fresh bread, crisp salad and soft drinks, all for the amazing price of just $7.00 per person.
We will also have a large selection of outstanding, homemade, freshly baked cakes, pies, cookies, and other
goodies for sale as well.
So, again PLEASE circle Saturday, October 9th for the date of the Provost Guard Spaghetti Dinner. We’ll be serving from 3-7
p.m., take-out or eat in at the All-Purpose Meeting and Eating Room on the campus of your Rajah Shrine. There is plenty of free

It is good to see so much activity among our brother Shriners.
Most Clubs are back to normal with their meeting schedules and
also having good attendance.
The Lehigh Shrine Club had our annual Bingo Night at the
Complex on Friday, May 21. As usual, it was well attended by
Nobles, Ladies and some guests. A hot buffett dinner was provided
before the Bingo games started. Before it was over, everyone had
won at least one prize. A few lucky players won two or three prizes.

Our Hawaiian Shirt Nite was held on
Wednesday, June 2, at the Brass Rail in
Allentown. We had 43 Nobles and Ladies in
a plethora of colorful short-sleeved shirts.
Present were Ill. Sir Kraig Leiby and his Lady
Janet, as well as five Past Potentates. LSC really
appreciates the support the Divan continues to
show our Club.
Dinner was salad, steak sandwiches, French
fries, and an ice cream sundae. This menu
continues to be one of the most popular dinners!

Jim Atkins, a new member of our Club.
He was a patient in the Shrine Hospital
in the 1980s and currently serves as a
Member of the Board of Governors.
He has truly come full circle. Noble Jim talked about hospital services, the number of
operations, patients and fund raising. He gave a very interesting and emotional program
and reminded us that the 5K Walk for Love is Saturday, October 2.
Nobles, remember to support and attend your Clubs and Units. Without active member
participation, we WILL cease to exist.

The Hospital Service Unit has seen an increase in patient transports in the past month. Philadelphia
Shrine Hospital still requires face masks, as do all medical facilities, and visitors to the hospital must
answer the usual battery of questions regarding COVID.
The Hospital Service Unit has started our ticket sale for the annual raffle. Tickets are available at the
Rajah office (see Recorder Noble Les Werley), or from members of the HSU. Tickets are $5.00 each or 5
for $20.00. Prizes range from $25.00 to $200.00 - a total of 10 prizes. Good luck to all participants. There
will only be 500 tickets sold, so don’t delay. Get yours today. Drawing will be held at fall MASA once
again. You will not have to be present to win.
The Walk for Love takes place October 2nd, at the Philadelphia Zoo. Hospital Services
made a donation to support the event and encourages everyone to participate. Register online at
Walkforlove5k.org. Remember, our Hospital Service Unit relies on your support. Without everyone’s financial support, we could
not provide this service to the patients. It’s the kids that count.

Greetings from your String Band,
The first parade of the season was on Memorial Day
in Mahanoy City. We had a full float of musicians. We
welcomed new members: Joe Hogan on banjo and Rich
Kunkel on trombone. Great to have you on board. The
parade was fairly long (didn’t know Mahanoy City was
that big). Chris did a great job maneuvering through those
very narrow streets.
Our July 4th parade was in Glenside. It was one of the
Larry Christman largest attended parades in many years. Great to see the
crowd waving and yelling, “Love you Shriners.” (Makes
it all worthwhile). We had a great turn-out of musicians,
and it was wonderful to see Bill Bechtel (Mr. Bass Man) back on the float. Thanks
to Bryan Snyder for making the sandwiches for after both parades.
As always, there is an open-door invitation for musicians to play in the String
Band. If you play an instrument, come out to a rehearsal on the second Wednesday
at 6 p.m. at the Complex. If you need to brush up, we’ll help you get started. Just
come with your instrument to rehearsal.
And speaking of instruments, I would like to share an accomplishment of our
string band President, Mike Gubich.

He built his own 6-string banjo, called a Bandtar, from scratch.

Mike practices lutherie as a hobby. Lutherie is the craft of building and
repairing string instruments. The term originally comes from the French
word for “lute.” He is a member of the Guild of American Luthiers, a global
educational organization that facilitates collaboration of ideas and methods
among luthiers.
Mike says his first venture into lutherie was in the late 60s when he built an
acoustic guitar from scratch. His latest creation, the instrument pictured here
took, three years to complete.
We’re proud to have a person, much less the
president, with such a unique skill in the String Band.
Part 2 of this story in next issue.
With the support of our Ladies, our purpose is
that we might play our instruments so that someday a
physically challenged child may walk and play again.

CHANTERS
Yes, indeed it has been a very long time that we have been out of the spotlight, but as things slowly get
back to “normal,” we are looking forward to singing and entertaining once again. In the meantime, we
are continuing our rehearsals and working as hard as ever to get ready to get back out there and sing for
everyone who enjoys good music and the harmonies of a corps of male voices.
Although you may have forgotten what it was like just a little over a year and half ago, the Rajah
Chanters are still going strong. In fact, we participated in a couple of events in July. We had the pleasure
of singing a Patriotic Medley along with the choir of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Kutztown on Sunday,
July 4th under the direction of Bruce Rohrbach, who also happens to be the Director and accompanist of
the Rajah Chanters.
Later that day, we rode our float through the streets of the Borough of Wyomissing to the cheers of
hundreds of on-lookers for their annual Independence Day Parade. Along the way we received several rounds of applause for
bringing our collective voices to the streets of Wyomissing.
Although there will not be a competition at the annual gathering of the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Chanters Association in Virginia
Beach this September, we will be performing, along with some of the other Shrine Chanter groups from MASA, at the Convention
center and in Rajah’s Hospitality room. We hope you will stop in and sing along with us to some of your favorite Chanters’ songs
and enjoy the camaraderie only being a Shriner can provide.
We are also excited about our own Dave DeTurk’s installation as President of MASCA and we wish him luck for a successful
year at the helm of this long-standing Association in MASA.
As conditions slowly get back to normal, we have been contacted by several adult living centers, community groups and
others. As we await firm dates from them, we continue to practice and
our President, Dwayne Miller is proud of the fact that we are ready,
willing and able to return to the stage and entertain once again.
Should you be a member of a group, association or committee
member looking for some top-notch entertainment, please get in
touch with any of the Chanters to obtain more information about our
availability.
Also, should you be interested in singing with us, we meet regularly
in the All-Purpose Room on the campus of Rajah Shrine, just get in
touch any Rajah Chanter and we’ll see that you have as much fun
singing as we do.
CONCERT BAND
The Concert Band will not be participating in the MASA Parade this year but will be entertaining in
the Sheraton Hospitality Suite. Regretfully, there were not enough musicians available. There is a similar
problem with declining membership in other Shrine bands as well. Given this fact, at MASA, the Mid-
Atlantic Shrine Band Association is planning a mass band performance along with the Chanters at the
Virginia Beach Convention Center on Friday morning at 10 a.m. in the lobby outside of the marketplace.
Hopefully, you will plan to stop by to support us.
Depending on when this article is published, the band will have performed at the Shriner’s Nite at the
Reading Phillies on August 15th. The band is looking for musicians. If you have
desire to play with our fun band, come join in. We can help you get reacquainted
with your favorite instrument. We meet on the 2nd Sunday of each month at 1 p.m.
The band is rehearsing for an upcoming party planned for Sunday, November 7th at 3 p.m. at the
Complex. Carbon Country Shrine Club will be co-hosting this event with the Concert Band. Tickets will
soon be available. It’s a family fun party. There will be fun things for the children to see and do. We hope
it will be a naked face party. I anticipate some “clowning” around. Background music will be supplied by
the German Band and the Nobleaires Dance Band.
Sorry to end on a sad note, but I would be remiss to not mention that the Black Camel has taken
another bandsman home to the celestial band. Captain Walter Levan will be missed by many of us. Thank
you, Walter, for all that you did for our bands. Job well done!

THE CHAPLAIN’S STUDY
Jesus, like most rabbis of his day, loved to tell stories to illustrate an idea. We call them parables. One
of the best- known parables is the one often called the “Prodigal Son.”
It is an unfortunate name because it points us toward the action of the son rather than where it belongs,
on the father.
The story is simple: a son demands his inheritance and his father gives it to him, and the son goes off
and loses it all. It is what happens next is the real part of the parable that is important.
The son comes home asking for his father’s forgiveness, being very penitential before him. The father
sees the son on his way home and runs to greet him and has him dressed in the finest clothing. This is the
point of the story; the father is waiting for the son to come to him and he welcomes back into his household
as if nothing happened.
This parable, as many of Jesus’ parables, is about the kingdom of God. He expresses what our heavenly
father is like. The kingdom of God has a father who is awaiting our return. Not only is God waiting but
forgiving us.
We live in a society that seems to be morally failing and on the brink of social degradation. Being a forgiving person is important
even though the world around us seems to be falling apart. Many people need to be forgiven and know that God loves us all when
we return to him. God is waiting for us to return if we fall away. He is ready to take us in without any recrimination. He loves us
that much.
If God loves us, we therefore should love one another and forgive one another as we serve one another. As we serve those in
need, we are fulfilling what God has wanted for us, to be in service to those in need.
LEGION OF HONOR
Slowly but surely, things are returning to some sort of normal. Remember that our August LOH
meeting is on Saturday the 14th at 9:00 a.m., and not the usual 2nd Tuesday.
Activities that Legion members have attended and contributed their service to are resuming. Here's a
list of some of those events:
(a) August 4 - Potentate’s Picnic -
The LOH always works in the clam line
bagging the clams and serving them -
Bagging starts at 8:00 a.m. and serving
starts at 1:00 p.m.
(b) September 19 - Sportsmen's
Raffle - Help is always needed preparing
and serving the food. Contact Les Werley
at the Shrine office if you can help.
(c) November 6 & 7 - Wreath Laying at the Arlington
National Cemetery - All booked, but contact Gary Brown in case
any openings have occurred.
(d) October 20 to 24 - Circus at Hamburg - The LOH will
need help in the kitchen where we have worked for many years
at the serving counter and cash register. We require two men
or women and a cashier for each of the two serving counters
for each show. That’s one show each on Wednesday, Thursday,
and Friday, three shows on Saturday and two shows on Sunday.

If you call Susie, she will pass your name on to Mic, since he
is doing the scheduling.

Owned by the Bethlehem Shrine club, the vehicle is a 1973 International
Gerstenslager fire truck. It was originally built for the Monaca Fire Department
No. 1., (near Pittsburgh) After years of service, the fire company decided to sell
the vehicle and that is when Garrett Newhartz, BSC secretary, spotted it in a
publication and convinced the membership to buy it. Now the club has given
the 48-year-old vehicle a life supporting a Shrine club’s activities.
