missed. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening and just being
in the outdoors with his favorite two dogs Loki and Bella.
The family would like to thank Dr. Phillip Malpass and Dr. Katie
Foreman and the nursing staff from the oncology department
at the Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson and the staff at
the BC Cancer Agency in Kelowna.
The family would like to thank doctors Smit, Musaji and Guillemette
and the nursing staff from the Kaslo Victorian Hospital
for the excellent care that Alan received.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made
to the Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxilary Society at PO Box
607, Kaslo, BC V0G 1M0 or to a charity of their choice.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of life
on August 28, 2021 at the Kaslo Legion Hall at 1 pm.
David Martin
Schonberg
November 30, 1942
- July 27, 2021
We are truly sad to announce that
Dave has passed away in New Denver
after struggling with Alzheimer’s
disease. Dave is survived by
his wife Crystal (Moon), daughter
Dawn (Ryan) Schonberg and sister
Ann (John) Pratt. He was born in
Le Pas, Manitoba to Roy (Reinhold)
and Muriel (Pickup) Schonberg.
After Muriel’s passing in 1950, Dave spent most of his childhood in
Kaslo with foster parents, Reg and Freda Mossman.
Over the years Dave acquired training as a machinist, heavy duty mechanic,
automotive technician, small engine technician and pilot. He
used his many skills in the mining, logging, and fishing industries. In
1977 he established Kaslo Truck & Saw Ltd, first as a chainsaw shop and
then an automotive/small engine repair business. He spent most of his
days helping people fix just about anything. In the spring of 2018, at
age 76, Dave decided to retire and sold the shop.
Dave loved the mountains, hunting, fishing, repairing/building things,
photography, music, dancing, animals, kids and having a good laugh
with friends.
A special thank you to staff at the New Denver Pavilion for helping
Dave through the last 5 months of his life.
A public memorial is planned for 2:00 pm, Saturday September 11 at St
Andrew’s United, Kaslo (pandemic restrictions allowing). Please come
and share your stories.
James Edward Green
October 20, 1945-July 31, 2021 James was born in Kimberley
BC, the first of four
children. His parents, Earl and Evelyn
Green were part of the exodus of
many young families to the mining
camp of Riondel in September of
1949. The purpose of this move was
to provide workers for the Bluebell
Mine and populate the town. They
lived, for those first years, in a tent
house (wood walls and canvas
roof), while his father worked in the
mine by day, and spent any spare
time constructing their permanent
home. Over the years, James took
on the responsibility of all major
improvements to that original family
home.
Upon completion of his education
at J.A. Cochran/Crawford Bay
Secondary School, he enrolled at
the Southern Alberta Institute of
Technology (S.A.I.T.) in the Culinary
Chef program. It was there that he
became proficient in the art of cake
decorating and a master of the
piping bag. He created many elaborate
wedding cakes for family and
friends in the years that followed.
At the conclusion of his 2nd year
Norman Stacey Essery
Passed away on June 10, 2021 with family
by his side (thank you so much KBRH).
He leaves behind his wife of 58 years
Bonnie, children Roger (Neva) Essery, Kari
Essery, Stacey (Tony) Kabatoff, and grandchildren
Devon, Leanne, and Kyle Kabatoff.
The legacy Norm has left behind is “giving
of oneself in dedication to his community”.
He was a Lion’s member in the Slocan
Valley for over 40 years, on the Passmore
Hall Board, as well as a Board of Director
at the local Credit Union. Norm loved his
community. When Bonnie and Norm purchased
their retirement home in Passmore,
Norm built a gazebo on their land so they
could entertain all their friends and family.
This little part of paradise was also the
venue for neighbourhood groups to use.
Norm and Bonnie supported in any way
they could.
Norm’s employment started at a young
age. Born in New Westminster, but growing
up in Sooke, BC, his many jobs took him
all over BC, from the Yukon to Seton Portage.
In Seton Portage he was the co-owner
of Baker-Essery Logging and Milling
Company for a number of years before
starting his career with BC Hydro where he
would work for the next 32 years.
As he closed in on retirement with BC
Hydro, Norm acquired a horse he rode
on back country trips for weeks at a time
in the Chilcotin-Caribou area. Camping
under the stars and in rustic cabins with
cowboy coffee in the morning along with
spectacular scenery was some of his most
relaxing times.
Norm and Bonnie loved to travel and in
their retirement re-visited all the places
they had been, as well as a cross-country
trip through all of Canada’s provinces. In
the winter they liked to travel south and
they spent a few winters as Snowbirds.
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye
to this man who cared so much for the
people who were in his life and the world
around him, but his family and friends will
have their hearts filled with memories of
his sense of humour, kindness, and love.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September
18, 2021 at Norm and Bonnie’s
“Bottom Field” from 10 to 2. Storytelling
will begin at 11:30 for anyone wanting
to share a memory or story they have
about Norm.
It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of James Green.
at S.A.I.T., he earned the award for
highest marks in his class.
After working at various hotels in
Calgary, he returned to BC and cooked
in camps on Vancouver Island. In the
late 70's, James made a career change
by gaining employment with Fording
Coal at Elkford, BC. He retired after 33
years as a Shovel Operator, with the
reputation of consistently loading no
less than 300 trucks every single shift.
He took part in many hunting and
fishing excursions with his dad and
brothers. Duck hunting was his favorite,
especially in his younger years.
Upon his retirement, he began to
take over the maintenance of the
family home yard and garden. James
was particularly proud to enter his
produce and flowers in the Crawford
Bay Fall Fair, for which he won numerous
top awards year after year. James
was also the primary caregiver for his
mother, Evelyn, in her later years.
James was predeceased by his father,
Earl in 1981, and his mother, Evelyn
in 2019. He is survived by his sister,
Connie and her children; Kris (Melanie)
Kirkham, Kelli Kirkham, K'Arlee
(Darren) O'Neill and their twins Jack
& Saoirse, and Dane Morison. His
brother Fred (Sherlynne) and nephew
Nick (Laura).
His youngest brother Richard (Karen)
and nieces April Green and
Crystal (Gary) Janzen and their
daughter Hannah.
James was a lifelong member of the
little white catholic church in Riondel,
to which he faithfully donated the
flowers for Sunday mass (a practice
he carried on from his mother). In
lieu of flowers, should anyone wish
to do so, a donation to the Most Holy
Redeemer Church in Riondel would be
appreciated.
A private family mass will be conducted
at the Cathedral of Mary
Immaculate in Nelson, followed by
interment in the family plot at Nelson
Memorial Park.
A memorial celebration will be held
in Riondel at a later date, in accordance
with current guidelines.
Thompson Funeral Service has been
Would your acreage benefit from soil amendment?
Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km
that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and
hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a Qualified Professional performing
soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow
soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination.
Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two
major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping
process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good
source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating
Celgrow into their soil.
New grants to promote
reconciliation
Indigenous communities, local governments and heritage
organizations in British Columbia will soon have access to
funding for projects that spotlight the province’s diverse cultural
heritage.
“It has been 150 years since BC joined confederation, but the
history of this place stretches back to time immemorial,” said
Josie Osborne, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “To heal and
move forward together, it is important that everyone sees themselves
reflected in BC’s heritage and cultural programs. This is
an opportunity for people to learn more about BC’s colonial
past and to honour the resilience both Indigenous and non-Indigenous
marginalized communities have shown. Let’s reflect
on our whole story and what we can do together to make BC an
even better place for generations to come.”
Administered through the First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation
and Heritage BC, the new, $30-million 150 Time Immemorial
grant program will fund projects that educate people about BC’s
cont’d on pg 14
SUDOKU
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken
down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the
numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and
box. Each number can appear only once in each row,
column and box. You can figure out the order in which
the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues
already provided in the boxes. The more numbers
you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
Promote reconciliation
cont’d from pg 10
colonial past, advance reconciliation and promote inclusivity
and diversity for the province’s future. Indigenous communities,
local governments and not-for-profit heritage organizations
with an Indigenous or heritage mandate are eligible to
submit applications starting in fall 2021.
“The First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation and the First Peoples’
Cultural Council work in tandem on the revitalization of Indigenous
languages,” said Lorna Wánosts’a7 Williams, chair, First
Peoples’ Cultural Foundation. “We turn now to revitalizing our
cultural heritage by focusing on the documentation, archiving
and sharing the precious stories, knowledge and wisdom of the
Elders and Knowledge Keepers for future generations to come.”
Paul Gravett, executive director, Heritage BC, said, “We think
of heritage as something in the past, but really it is the recognition
of who we are and want to be. We look at the past to
acknowledge important events and great sacrifices, and to measure
our achievements and our failings. This is why the values of
reconciliation, diversity and resilience are so important to heritage
today. Based on these values, this unique funding program
allows us to reflect on the past 150 years and time immemorial
and as we work together for a stronger, more inclusive future.”
The program will support projects in BC communities
focused on reconciliation and building resiliency throughout
the next 150 years and beyond, honouring BC’s diverse cultural
heritage.
The 150 Time Immemorial grant program will open for an
initial intake in fall 2021. Details on eligibility for project funding
will be announced at that time.
Tackling homelessness
The City of Nelson is receiving $278,016 to
create a new Coordinated Access Hub for people
at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
The Hub will be a one-stop shop for many
of the supports and services the population
needs, including employment services, housing,
harm reduction and health services.
New Democrat MLA Brittny Anderson says
vulnerable people in Nelson will have greater
access to local services which will help tackle
homelessness as the community recovers from
the impacts of the pandemic.
“The people of Nelson have long worked
together to support those in need in our
community,” said Anderson, MLA for Nelson-Creston.
“I’m pleased to see this work
evolving into the Coordinated Access Hub,
connecting people with the services they need
and making Nelson a more welcoming place
to live.”
MLA Anderson says this investment is part
of the Strengthening Communities Program
which is providing support to 48 communities
across BC Over $76 million will support local
governments to combat the impacts of homelessness
and keep their communities safe and
healthy as they recover from the pandemic.
Bodhi Kuhn wins the
BC Downhill Mountain
Bike Championship
The downhill mountain bike racer from
Rossland who was too young to compete as
a junior was only seconds off the winning
time of the pro-elite men. As BC Provincial
Champion, Bodhi Kuhn is blowing away the
downhill mountain bike race results.
Bodhi Kuhn, a 16-year-old student at Seven
Summits Centre for Learning, is successfully
captivating the attention of followers of the
downhill racing scene. He has been given
the title of fastest Canadian junior by Terry
McKall of cyclist magazine (https://cycling-
magazine.ca/mtb/meet-bodhi-kuhn-the-16-
year-old-dh-racer-pushing-elite-pace/ ).
But there is so much more to this impressive
young man. He is also a successful competitive
freeskier, and he earned a top academic
award at Seven Summits Centre for Learning.
This gives him the title as a triple threat.
“I find it manageable to balance my time
between competing and training with my
schoolwork as Seven Summits Learning
offers online education, in class teachers, and
support for athletes,” says Bodhi. “It’s just a
matter of organization and prioritizing.” He is
interested in the fields of science and physics
and plans to end up in aerospace engineering.
Bodhi started competitive freeskiing at
seven years of age. He enjoys freeskiing the
challenging terrain at Red Mountain and the
camaraderie of others who he races alongside.
He is an independent racer and looks
one day to race in the Freeride World Tour
when he turns eighteen. However, his main
focus is on racing downhill mountain bikes
as fast as possible.
Rossland is one of the premier mountain
bike destinations in BC - earning the
title “Mountain Bike Capital of Canada”
by Explore Magazine. It doesn’t stretch the
imagination to see how a kid growing up with
access to the bounty of downhill trails could
be so strikingly fast and technical at such a
young age. In 2019, Bodhi won all the BC Cup
downhill mountain bike races in his division
under-15, including the Nationals. This year
Bodhi won two under-17 Canada Cup downhill
mountain bike races in Fernie and Panorama.
At Panorama, Bodhi set the second of
two fastest times. The fastest time was set by
the winner of the Pro Elite men’s race. Last
weekend he won the race in Big White making
him the BC Provincial Champion.
“What is most important is to stay healthy
and just keep putting in fast, consistent
times at the races. I hope one day to compete
beyond the regional races I am currently
winning and make it to the World Cup for
downhill mountain biking,” Bodhi acknowledges.
In time, many more people will know
the name Bodhi Kuhn. The Seven Summits
Centre for Learning community hopes Bodhi
continues to work hard, stay focused, and
surround himself with positive supportive
people.
