The Word on the Street

haddonfield.today | 3

By popular demand, the

Historical Society will repeat its

three-part Haddonfield 101 series

on Tue Aug 3, Thu Aug 5, and

Wed Aug 18, on Zoom.

If you could have dinner with

a notable American who is no

longer with us, who would it be,

and why?

“I loved watching

Carl Sagan’s ‘Cosmos’

show on TV, 40 years

ago,” says MICKEY

DELORENZO of

Haddonfield. “He

was such a good

teacher. He rang the

bell about climate

change and some

other major issues

the world is just

beginning to grapple

with.”

Audubon’s LEROY

HARRIS really

enjoyed ‘Ray,’ the

movie about Ray

Charles. “He faced

many obstacles

throughout his life.

I’m sure I would learn

a lot, if I could have

dinner with him.”

As a student at the

Elizabeth Haddon

School, ELAINE

ERCOLANI of

Haddonfield was

aware of the school’s

namesake. “I’d like

to find out how she

coped, as a woman

in a man’s world.”

“Ronald Reagan,”

says Haddonfield’s

ROGER JACOBS. “I’d

like to thank him for

tax-rate reduction,

deregulation, supply

side economics,

domestic growth,

and challenging

Russia.”

URSULA HARRIS

of Audubon says

that Della Reese

reminds her of her

grandmother. “The

way she talked and

presented herself.

If I had dinner with

her, I’d like to ask

her about what she

went through, as a

young woman and

as an entertainer.”

MIEKE MACKAY of

Cherry Hill grew up

in “a very patriarchal

environment in the

Philippines.” She

would to like dine

with Ruth Bader

Ginsburg and “find

out how she was

able to rise above

what American

society expected of

her, as a woman.”

Art camp emphasizes life skills

Believing that summer art camp is all about creative thinking and problem

solving while exploring a variety of art materials and processes, the Markeim

Arts Center is offering a summer program of activities and projects with

biweekly themes that emphasize life skills.

Of the eight weeks, all but three are completed. Registration is still available

for:

• Week 6 – Mon Jul 26 to Fri 30: Protecting our Animals and Creatures and

Beasts, Oh My! (social responsibility/global awareness).

• Weeks 7 and 8 – Mon Aug 2 to Fri 13: Building a Bright Future: STEAM

(teamwork/problem solving).

There are three attendance options:

• Morning session: 9am to 12n – $300 per week (members $275).

• Afternoon session: 1 to 4pm – $300 per week (members $275).

• Full day session: 9am to 4pm – $600 per week (members $550).

Campers have the option for registering for both weeks, or one week at a

time. Those who register for two-week blocks will receive a $20 discount off

their registration.

Registration will be limited to 36 campers per AM or PM session, which will

be split up into three cohorts of campers based on age and ability.

The Markeim has designed every day differently in order to expand

campers’ minds. Campers will spend the day alternating between indoor and

outdoor activities with their primary counselor, and will also participate in

specialty classes throughout the week, including yoga, dance, clay/ceramics.

Markeim will host an exhibit of campers’ artworks at the end of each

biweekly camp session.

Additional details and registration at markeimartscenter.org.

Outdoor story time at Greenfield Hall

After a break last year due to Covid-19, the Historical Society is partnering

again with the Public Library to host three children’s story times this summer.

One of the sessions had to be postponed because of inclement weather. The

new date is Fri Jul 30, and children age 4 and up are invited to the gardens

behind Greenfield Hall – 343 Kings Highway East – 10:30 to 11 am.

The Public Library’s Eric Zino and Jordan Bilodeau and Historical Society

board member Deborah Garwood are leading these events, which will include

historical stories and a craft activity.

The story times are free, but space is limited and reservations are required.

Register only the child/children you will be escorting to the event, so the

Library can plan enough crafts for all children attending.

RSVP here – bit.ly/3qlrouf – or scan the QR n code in the margin.

Recent Issues

Do I look fat in this dress?

As a follow-up to its presentation of The Vagina

Monologues, Haddonfield Plays & Players has

scheduled a staged reading of The Good Body for

Thu Aug 5, Fri Aug 6, and Sat Aug 7 at 8pm.

In this work, Eve Ensler turns her unique eye to

the rest of the female form. Whether undergoing

Botox injections or living beneath burqas, women

of all cultures and backgrounds feel compelled to

change the way they look in order to fit in. The Good

Body merges cross-cultural explorations with Eve’s

own personal journey coming to terms with her

“less-than-flat, post-forties stomach.”

The San Francisco Chronicle described The Good

Body as “passionate, funny, frank, revealing, even

shocking, and genuinely committed to improving

life on this planet.”

A New York Times’ critic wrote: “Ms. Ensler wants

to soften the ever-fraught relationship between

American women and their bodies, to expose the

destructive formulas that lead them to assuage

their insecurities by punishing their flesh … rich

in pointed, amusing details … forthrightly funny …

bristling with wisecracks [and] exotically harvested

snippets of wisdom.”

Tickets are $20 and may be purchased online

here: bit.ly/3xZveMy -- or scan the QR code n.

The Good Body will be presented on Plays &

Players’ outdoor stage.

Demolishing Bancroft: New bids

The Borough received five proposals in response

to its call for bids to demolish various buildings

on the Bancroft site. All of the bids were above the

amount the Borough had budgeted. (The range was

$871,871 to $2,144,800.)

During their meeting on Mon Jul 19, the

Commissioners authorized a new request for bids,

for a smaller scope of work. (They removed Cooley

Hall, on the west side of Hopkins Lane.)

Lullworth Hall and a number of other historic

structures on the campus are specifically excluded

from the scope of work.

An elephant?

On Kings Highway?

There was a time when the sight of elephants on Kings

Highway in Haddonfield was relatively commonplace.

In June 1940, for example, the Hamid-Morton Circus

came to town and paraded down the Highway on its

way to a two-day extravaganza at the High School. In

May 1959, the Hunt Brothers Circus – which boasted

“the second-largest privately owned elephant herd

on this continent” – set up camp and three rings

(presumably) at Crows Woods, following an

obligatory march down the main street.

Circuses – especially those with elephants – are vanishing from the pantheon

of popular entertainment. And the parade down Main Street featuring

elephants and other “wild” animals is certainly a thing from the past.

Well, except ...

At about 10:30am on Thursday, August 5, a 450-pound baby elephant named

Ndotto will be driven down Kings Highway, from a starting-point in the vicinity

of the Hadrosaurus sculpture. His destination will be the Children’s Sculpture

Zoo, a project of Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture Trust (HOST) – which I chair

– within the Tatem Memorial Garden at Kings Highway East and Evergreen.

Ndotto is a bronze sculpture

– about 4ft 6in high and long,

and about 3ft wide – based on

a real-life orphaned elephant

found wandering a remote

region of Kenya in 2014. Just two

days old, alone and scared, he

was rescued by local tribesmen

and rehabilitated at the worldrenowned

Sheldrick Wildlife

Trust.

The story of Ndotto’s dramatic

rescue inspired Australian

sculptors Gillie and Marc

Schattner to create an exhibit

of 21 life-sized bronze elephants that became not only the hit of London in

2020 but also a vehicle for raising awareness and funds for the protection of

endangered animals.

The Schattners cast three Ndottos. One is in London, another is in New York,

and the third is coming (permanently) to Haddonfield.

HOST invites “elephant lovers of all ages” to line Kings Highway at 10:30am

on August 5 to welcome Ndotto to town, or to go to the Sculpture Zoo and

watch as he is maneuvered into his new home, at about 11am (rain or shine).

Ndotto will join a life-sized giraffe, a bunny, a toad, and a sea lion in what has

become a very popular component of the Tatem Memorial Garden.

The acquisition of Ndotto was made possible by generous donations from

Joseph E. Murphy, Lisa Wolschina, 1st Colonial Community Bank, and Surety

Title Company.
