FINAL 2021

MELANIE

REAY

FROM THE HEAD COACH

Tickets on

sale now!

Adults £20-25, Kids £2.50

5th December

Hello everyone and welcome to the

Stadium of Light for today’s eagerly

awaited first home match of our

Championship season against a tough

Blackburn Rovers side.

We’ve waited such a long time for you

to all be back watching the girls and

having our support behind us is massive.

It doesn’t get bigger than a match at the

Stadium of Light in front of our fans.

We feel as a collective unit that we’re

looking much stronger heading into this

season. We have a great setup, a good

mix of youth and experience in our squad

of 18 for which we’ve recruited well, and

it’s fantastic to have Steph Libbey back

alongside me.

Season tickets are of course on sale for

our matches at Eppleton this season

where the girls are really looking forward

to being back as our home, so if you

haven’t already, please do as much as

you can to show your support – the

more fans we can get inside the ground,

the better.

We want to make our home record

strong this season as we aim for a solid

season back at Championship level,

and your support could not be more

appreciated by all of us here.

Enjoy the game,

Mel

Keira

Ramshaw

FROM THE CAPTAIN

Hello everyone and welcome back

to the Stadium of Light – we’re all

absolutely buzzing to have all of our

supporters back with us again.

The girls have been really looking

forward to this game for a long time,

after we opened our league campaign

back in the Championship against

Coventry United last Sunday.

It’s an amazing feeling to be back in this

division, having of course been hoping

to win promotion a couple of years ago.

It has felt like a long time coming, so we

want to do everything we can to have a

successful season this time around.

I feel that this season we have a good

depth to the squad, and first and

foremost we’ll be taking each game as

it comes, keeping our heads down and

making sure we know what needs to

be done.

It goes without saying that our fans

behind us will give us that extra push we

need this season, and as a Sunderland

fan born and bred myself and seeing how

the fans have got behind the Lads this

season, I can’t express enough how key

you all are to our season and beyond.

Enjoy the game,

Keira

SUNDERLAND

TOGETHER AGAINST

DISCRIMINATION

Sunderland AFC’s players, staff and

supporters’ groups stand together in

the fight against racism and all other

forms of discrimination.

As a collective, we are disappointed

that a small minority of supporters have

chosen to boo players that have taken

the knee ahead of kick-off at the Stadium

of Light and away from home.

We will continue to empower each

individual to make their own decisions

and support them wholeheartedly in

any action they take to help eradicate all

forms of discrimination from our society,

including taking, or not taking, the knee.

We urge those who have booed to

reflect on the impact this has on players,

staff and their fellow supporters and we

commend those who, upon hearing the

booing, have reacted positively to show

that our players are not alone in their

fight against discrimination.

Our message is loud and clear that

all forms of discrimination are

completely unacceptable and have

no place within our football club or

within our community.

Together, we are Sunderland.

We ask you to support our team,

support our players and support each

other in our efforts to end racism and

discrimination.

Emma Kelly has been a hugely welcome

returning addition to the Sunderland

squad this season.

The midfielder rejoined the club in July

and was a regular player and goalscorer

during pre-season.

“Pre-season has set us up really well for

the coming months and I think we have

a good depth and squad dynamic,”

Kelly said.

“Training has been excellent; I’ve been

really impressed with the standard. I

thought the girls had done really well in

the pre-season game I watched [against

Celtic] just before I joined.

“Mel and Steph have again shown their

quality as coaches over the summer

schedule and we feel in a really good

place. I’ve had them both as coaches

since I was really young, so I know them

both very well. It’s great for

their expertise being passed onto us

as players.”

Kelly is eager to be able to use the

benefits of her experience to help some

of the younger players in the squad.

“The group of girls we have are fantastic

– we have a wide range of ages and

experience all put together.

“Anything I can do to pass over some of

my experience to benefit some of the

younger girls, I’ll always look to do. I feel

like I’ve learnt a lot over the past few

years and gone through so many ups and

downs in my career so far. I’ll always try

and help my teammates.

“I feel our squad can really excel and

we’re all positive and buzzing going into

the rest of the season.”

Finally, the former Birmingham City

star is delighted with the potential

atmosphere on Wearside this afternoon.

“It’s great to be at the Stadium of

Light today.

“I think it shows the level of support for

us and everyone is excited to play in

such a fantastic stadium and get a great

backing behind us.

“The atmosphere and having friends and

family there will always give us that extra

lift and hopefully we can go out there

and deliver for everyone.”
