QuarryTrailsMelanie McMillan“Like riding a bike.” The idea that a skill,once learned, is never forgotten. Over the lastyear and a half, many people have been findingthat to be true, as they reacquaint themselveswith a particular skill most of us learned inchildhood. The pandemic silver lining formany individuals and families has been arenewed appreciation of the great outdoors.With so many entertainment venues closed orat reduced capacity, outdoor activities havebecome extremely popular, not the least ofwhich is cycling. From leisurely bike ridesaround the neighborhood to more adventuroustrail riding, the dramatic increase in bikesales from 2019 to 2020 testifies to itspopularity. Luckily for those RankinCountians who are new or returningmountain bike enthusiasts, The Tri CountyMountain Bike Association and the City ofBrandon have teamed up to provide bike trailsclose to home.The Tri County Mountain Bike Association(TCMBA) was formed 21 years ago andsince its inception, the volunteer-led group hasworked hard to build and maintain bike trailsin the Jackson metro area and beyond.According to Chris Wise, president of theTCMBA board, the group has more than600 members, and volunteers average 1,300hours per year building and maintainingnatural surface mountain bike trails. Additionally,the organization raised almost$15,000 last year to rebuild wood structureson trails in the area.Mountain biking is definitely my favorite activity and has been for the past five years. I did not start mountain biking againuntil my mid 40s so it’s never too late to get started. Until now I’ve driven to Ridgeland several times a week to ride and, now,I can ride on my side of town. The Quarry trails are delightful and there are trails that are appropriate for beginners to advancedriders. I’m so thankful to the City of Brandon and to all the people who have been working to develop these trails for use byMississippians and hopefully one day for youth mountain bike races. As the team director for the Mississippi Blues, one of threeMississippi-based NICA teams, we will be looking for venues to use for middle/high school mountain bike races over the nextyear or so.
