My son and I have ridden mountain bikestogether for the past several years and we’rereally looking forward to having another localoption with the new Quarry trails. Bikes were abig part of my life growing up and now they’rea big part of his life. Mountain biking can beas casual or as serious as you’d like to make it.Fast or slow, there’s something for everyone.He’s fast and I’m slow but we both love it. In 2019, TCMBA approached MayorButch Lee about the possibility of developingbike trails at Quarry Park in Brandon.Recognizing the benefit of an additionalrecreational venue for the community, cityleadership and TCMBA formed a partnership,with the city taking on most of the expenses,and members of TCMBA donating their timeand muscle to making the trail project a reality.Jefcoat Fence company contributed to theproject by loaning the volunteers an excavatorwhich enabled them to clear a lot of the trailquickly. Quarry Park currently offers approximatelyfour miles of trails, with plans to haveten miles total upon completion.For those with a competitive streak, thefirst ever Brandon Beatdown Short TrackMountain Bike Series was held in July on threeconsecutive Saturdays. “The City of Brandoncovered the cost of hosting this race series, sothe event was free for participants,” saidorganizer Trey Spillman. Spillman noted thatanother race series, The Gulf South RegionalMountain Bike Series, hosts approximately tenraces annually across Mississippi, Louisiana,and Alabama. “Mississippi is well representedas a host for these events, and we hope that theTrails at the Quarry Park will be added to thatseries once they are complete. We’ve studiedother cities and know that events like this, aswell as the availability of the trails themselves,have a positive economic impact on the city.”In August, the city will host the first everBrandon Quarry Crit Series at the amphitheater,offering race opportunities to those whoprefer road riding to trails. A criterium or “crit”race is a short road race of a certain number oflaps on a closed circuit. There is no charge toparticipate in these races, which will be heldevery Wednesday night in August. Additionally,the Louisiana Mississippi Bicycle RacingAssociation (LAMBRA) is working with thecity to host a large road race in the fall.The Quarry Trails are open every day tothe public, but if you venture out on a Thursdaynight, you’ll notice that trail “traffic” is a littleheavier than normal. Each week, weatherpermitting, TCMBA meets for a group ridewhere all ages and experience levels arewelcome to join. On a recent Thursday, close to20 riders met to enjoy the trails they haveworked so hard to build and maintain. Theirexcitement and enthusiasm are contagious, andno doubt they could convince even the mostreluctant riders to give the trails a try.Not content to rest on their laurels,TCMBA leaders and volunteers are hoping tobuild other bike trails in the county and arecurrently looking for available land. “My goal isto do everything in my power to grow the sportof mountain biking in this area,’’ says TreySpillman. “I’m thankful that we have aproactive and enthusiastic club in TCMBA,with experienced and creative trail builders andvolunteers.
