Couple want road safety
concerns addressed

DAVID KILLICK and
Alexandra McDonough-Killick
are on a mission to make the
streets of Hoon Hay safer for
pedestrians and motorists.
Their concerns​ about traffic
safety in Hoon Hay have led
them to compiling a comprehensive
inventory of sites
around their neighbourhood
they feel need work done on
them to improve traffic flows
and enhance pedestrian safety.
The couple have voiced their
concerns a number of times to
the Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board citing the rapid
expansion of housing subdivisions
and commercial properties
in the south-west of the city,
an area already established as
having more homes under construction
than in any other part
of the city.
Killick said he has become
concerned in recent years about
the increase in traffic flows
to these many new housing
subdivisions along Sparks Rd,
Cashmere Rd and neighbouring
streets has increased
substantially and so have the
crashes.

Call for more smart bins in parks

THE DECISION to remove
regular rubbish bins from
city parks and replace them
with expensive smart bins
continues to frustrate the Hoon
Hay Community Association
members.
Chairwoman Jenny Goodman
and association member Kaitlyn
White took their concerns to the
Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board and felt they made a
strong case for the city council
to consider putting in another
pair of bins inside the 9ha Hoon
Hay Park and 7ha Spreydon
Domain.
“They were very receptive and
now they need more feedback
from council staff,” Goodman
said.
“They took away all the
rubbish bins and replaced them
with only one smart bin in each
park, for large parks like ours
that is not enough,” she said.
“The first we knew of the
council’s decision back in June
to pull out all but one of the
rubbish bins was when residents
started telling us about rubbish
piling up around the parks.
“Without any signage to show
people where they are, those
using the park cannot find them,
leaving them no choice but to
either take their rubbish home
with them or dump it nearby.”
She added that the overflow
of rubbish was then left to be
blown around the Spreydon
Park, shredded by the mowers,
and blown or thrown into the
nearby Heathcote River.
Committee member Daniel
Hay said as recent as last week
he had to unblock obstructions
in the river caused by rubbish
ending up there.
“The bin they put in Hoon
Hay Park is located in the southwestern
corner by the basketball
court, away from the sports
fields and playground, It has no
signage pointing to its location,”
he said.
Goodman was confused when
she saw what she thought was
the new rubbish bin in Hoon
Hay Park when it fact it wasn’t
one. It was instead a nondescript
black box next to the barbecue
pit.
“People wouldn’t even know
what this black box here was if
they walked past it.
“The bin’s distance from the
main park areas means older
residents or families won’t walk

The city council advised in
June that more than 200 parks
would be left without rubbish
bins when they removed 840 of
them across the city.
About 100 “smart” bins were
installed, but 211 “low-use”
neighbourhood parks had
their bins taken away and not
returned.
The city council spent
$830,000 on installing the new
smart bins, but it expects to save
$300,000 each year.

roads has become increasingly
dangerous. We have seen a number
of accidents and we strongly
urge community representatives
and authorities to take action to
minimise the risk for all road
users,” he said in his report to the
community board.
The couple said their main areas
of concern were:
1. Crossing point on Sparks Rd
opposite Centennial Park.
There is a pedestrian island
here and it’s frequently used by
pedestrians, including school
children, dog walkers, people
with pushchairs, and cyclists.
Warning signs on the approach to
this crossing were removed some
years ago and not replaced. Traffic
zooms along without slowing
down. The new cycle crossing
point, controlled by lights, about
50m west, is much safer. Warning
signs near the pedestrian island
would be helpful. As this is a
crossing to
a school, should traffic be allowed
to travel at 50km/h-plus here?
2. Turning into Waimokihi Pl
from Sparks Rd. Engineers assured
us there would be a turning lane
but there isn’t, only cross-hatching,
which is too narrow and risks
turning cars being shunted by fastmoving
traffic heading west. It is
safer to hold up the traffic and wait
for a gap in the traffic to turn right.
Warning signs would help.
3. Intersection of Sparks Rd and
Lyttelton St. Traffic is often so busy
that it is only possible to turn right
(from each road) on the red light.
Often, cars continue straight ahead
on amber or red, making this
manoeuvre even more dangerous.
There have been a number of
accidents here. The best solution
would be right-hand turning lanes
and arrows.
4. Intersection of Sparks and
Hoon Hay Rds. As above.
5. Lack of pedestrian crossing on
corner of Hoon Hay Rd and Rose
St near Good Life Dairy. This is a
very popular dairy. Pedestrians,
including children, often walk out
into the traffic. This is incredibly
dangerous. A crossing is needed
here urgently.

Quilters’ work on show at exhibition

THE COVID-19 pandemic has
caused a surge of people reaching
for a sewing machine to try their
hand at the craft of quilt-making.
Christchurch Quilters president
Maria Rohs said the club’s
biennial exhibition this week has
more than 200 entries.
“We used to struggle to get
100,” Rohs said.
“We’ve got a lot more quilts in
the show than we usually do because
people have had two lockdowns,
this year and last year, so
everyone’s had more time.
“People are keener on getting
back into traditional things.”
The exhibition will run in the
Papanui High School hall until
Sunday. This year the theme is
“vivid.”
A wide range of styles from
traditional to modern would be
on show, with three non-members
selecting prize-winners.
Roh is among the exhibitors,
although she had been to busy
organising the event to enter any
major works.
However, her handiwork
earned her a national award in
the Aotearoa Quilters’ Great
New Zealand Quilt Show earlier
this year.
She was thrilled when her
piece, Night View at Sunset, won
the small quilt section.
The piece was inspired by
the view from her Huntsbury
home, and she captured the
intense light by using metallic
thread.
In over three decades of the
craft, she had only ever made one
quilt for herself, she said.
“I’ve only ever had one of my
own, when I had my 60th birthday
I got some floral fabric and
got everyone to make a block
each.’’
Several sewing machines
were set up as around 50 people
pitched in with their contributions,
and each person also
signed their fabric.
This favourite quilt of the
many she had made, and received
a lot of use, she said.
She first discovered quilting 35
years ago after hearing that her
local church ran craft sessions,
charging just $1 to cover cups of
tea.
A keen sewer since her school
days, her curiosity was aroused.
“I’d heard about it and I
thought: ‘That sounds interesting,
I’ll go along and try it’.”
Three years later, she became
one of the earliest members of
the Christchurch Quilters.

clothes, as well as specially
bought fabric, were used to
make her first piece, a “pretty

basic” bed quilt for one of her
daughters.
Over three decades later, she
had much more material to
hand.
“You see lovely fabric that you
like and then you buy it and
gradually you build up quite a
collection.”
Her current stash included
pieces from the early days when
she was just starting, as well as
fabric from her family’s native
Austria, and hand-customised
fabric she had worked on during
craft classes.
Most were cotton, the standard
quilting fabric because of its
longevity.
The creativity of the craft was
her favourite thing about it
“It’s an artistic outlet. I’ve got
more into art quilts and I’m not
making so many bed quilts now.”
This was common for quilters
who had worked their way
through all of their family members,
she said.
All her grandchildren were
equipped with personalised
quilts, so she had turned to make
smaller, ornamental works of her
own design.
Nature was a constant inspiration.
A forest scene depicting
kōwhai and kererū was currently
under way, and she had recently
finished a piece based on fallen
winter leaves.
Another quilt she had recently
finished was based on leaves
she noticed on the ground over
winter.
“I don’t think it is hard, you
just need to decide you want to
do it and find out how.”
Learning the craft was easier
than ever these days, especially
because of online tutorials on
sites such as YouTube, she said.
However, it was a time-intensive
hobby.
“Only once did I actually take
a note of all the hours. It was a
queen-sized quilt that I made
for a friend. It was 90 hours, and
that . . . was just making the top
of it.”
