PAGE 2 AIDS COUNCIL OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK MISSION The AIDS Council of Northeastern New York is a not-for-profit human service agency whose mission is to reduce the risk, fear, and incidence of HIV infection, encourage the independence of people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, and promote understanding of their needs. VISION The AIDS Council of Northeastern New York advances awareness of HIV/AIDS as a public health risk, promoting a shared community response leading to a world without AIDS. WHAT WE DO In operation for more than 26 years, the AIDS Council is the preeminent provider of AIDS services in a fifteen county region in Upstate New York with offices in Albany, Hudson Falls, Hudson, Plattsburgh, and Schenectady. The AIDS Council provides comprehensive support services to more than 650 persons living with HIV/AIDS and more than 500 family members each year, as well as cuttingedge prevention and outreach programs. 2009-2010 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 3 CLIENT SERVICES UPDATE Providing support services to people living with HIV/AIDS is at the heart of our mission. During the 2009-2010 Fiscal Year, the AIDS Council provided services to more than 650 people living with HIV/AIDS. • • • • • • • • The Health Insurance Access Program (HIAP) started on August 1, 2009. HIAP provides clients with a single source for enrolling in health insurance programs that will ensure they have access to and are able to pay for services and medications. Clients receive assistance deciphering complicated forms, filling out documentation, contacting health care providers, transportation to and from medical appointments, and anything they need to access health care. In addition, the AIDS Council is working in the community to distribute information about the various health care options that are relevant to our clients (AIDS Drug Assistance Program, Healthy New York, Child Health Plus, etc.). HIAP Outreach Specialists assisted more than 590 individuals through outreach and education events during the year. More than 200 clients and family members were helped through the Holiday Sponsor Program, which provides toys for clients’ children, warm clothing, household items, boots, coats, and holiday cheer to clients and their families – all provided by generous donors who sponsored individuals or families served by the AIDS Council. 74 families were adopted. More than 100 families received toiletry and household items donated by the Reformed Church Synod of Albany and Concord Pools. 65 children of clients from Pre-K to college-age received back-to-school supplies. Additionally, 50 children received brand-new backpacks filled with school supplies. The annual Client Holiday Dinner was held on December 14, 2009, funded by Our Brothers’ Keepers Foundation (OBKF). The dinner was attended by more than 100 clients and family members from the Capital Region, as well as Columbia, Greene, Warren, and Washington Counties. The Client Cookout was held on August 4, 2009 and was attended by more than 100 clients and their family members. Clients representing the Albany, Schenectady, Hudson, and Hudson Falls offices attended and enjoyed an afternoon of food, games, music, swimming, and outdoor activities. The Glens Falls Volunteer Committee organized a summer cookout on September 15, 2009 for Hudson Falls office clients. Attendees enjoyed good food and fun at Crandall Park. Energy efficient light bulbs and weatherization kits including weather stripping, hot water heater covers, plastic window sheets and water pipe covers were provided to clients allowing them to make their home energy efficient reducing heating and electric costs. The Plattsburgh office hosted a Client Advisory meeting in October 2009. Six clients and one former client attended and provided feedback. As a result of this feedback, the agency will be working with a client to develop an electronic HIV/AIDS resource guide for the North Country. Additionally, several clients requested that notices regarding legislative issues related to HIV/AIDS as well as other health-related items of interest be forwarded via e-mail. A blind-copied e-mail group has been developed which will allow the agency to distribute this information while ensuring client confidentiality.
